We Are Star Children @ The Jefferson Theater

This is a few clips mashed up from the We Are Star Children show a few years back at the Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville, Virginia. Elby Brass and The Judy Chops opened up the show, and the Star Children got some of us up on stage for a few songs. The clip from the group number starts at 1:20, I know there is a full video around somewhere but I haven't tracked it down yet.

The Jefferson is a really cool old Vaudeville House/Movie Palace on the downtown mall in Charlottesville, built in 1912. It has great sound and several levels of balconies, which now is a venue for some amazing national music acts as well as local bands. I have been lucky enough to get to play there on a few occasions with different bands, and it is always one of the best shows to play.

When the Jefferson was first purchased for its current incarnation as a music venue, I was a 16 year old in an improv theater troupe in Staunton. I can't remember why, but there was going to be a special show with the Hackensaw Boys to break in the place before renovations began. Red Light didn't have an alcohol license or anything yet, and somehow our improv group got set up and run a makeshift bar in lobby through a non-profit liquor license to raise money. I wasn't 18, which is how old I needed to be to hand out beers, and neither were several of the others there, but no one asked and we didn't say anything. I didn't drink at all back then, but I really wanted to see the show and check out the amazing old theater! The seats were still in the theater at the time, since no work had been done, so the crowd just danced in the aisles or went up to one of several balcony areas overlooking the stage. It was a blast and we raised money (I guess) for our group and got to see a great show. The Hacksaw Boys got somewhat famous soon after, but even more interesting is that Old Crow Medicine Show set up and played in the lobby before the headliners came on, 10 feet from where I was illegally serving alcohol. They were virtually unknown at the time, but several years later would blow up thanks to their much loved or hated hit "Wagon Wheel" (Hey, Momma rock me...).
