After the storm

in nature •  8 years ago

I went for a walk along the beach the morning after a storm hit our coast.  Usually, the beach is littered with driftwood and kelp, which makes for an interesting stroll. I normally take a little bit of kelp home and put it in my “brew” for the garden.

As I was walking, I noticed something odd up ahead. When I reached it, I was suddenly sad…there was a beautiful little puffer fish, all puffed up, lying in the sand. It looked so alive that I gave it a nudge with my toe…no…...nothing.

I thought, “you poor little thing, how on earth did you get there”

I walked on…. what was that in the tangle of seaweed up ahead? Oh no…another much larger one (actually, really large) washed up with the weed and the inevitable stupid plastic bag.

Just beyond him was yet another puffer fish, medium size tangled in the weed, and then a very small one…

It looked like a family (I realise I’m probably being ridiculous now) it looked like the babies, and mum and dad…so so sad.

I spied another local and I asked him what he thought had killed them? He told me, once they get caught in the waves, they can’t get out and are rolled over and over until they are stranded on the beach. As we’d had huge waves the night before, and looking at the very small fins they had, I had no doubt about the truth of what he said.

I left them there for the sea to reclaim and turned to go back.

What a sight.

In the far distance, you'll see Mt Maunganui otherwise known as “The Mount” (surfies know it well) it is popular destination for tourists with it's white sands and views, it also is the gateway into our safe harbor.

I took the shot then hurried back to the car before the rain hit.

Oh wow, thanks so much @silvernova, thanks to you the whale DID stop by. So appreciate your support. Loved your last post too

Nice pictures. :) I'll follow you to see more interesting stuffs from you.

Oh thank you !! glad you liked, thank you for the follow.

Thank you for posting these great pictures! Poor little things, they had a wild last ride, no doubt. Did you get the plastic bag? :)

Sure did, put some seaweed in it to take home.

Oh the poor puffers :-(

I see there's another storm on the way over the next 24 hours. Probably hitting you worse than us.

We sent a parcel up to someone in Welcome Bay today - it wasn't you, was it? Wouldn't that be a coincidence!

We didn't get the storm too bad luckily !!!!! We've had enough rain!! Nup, parcel wasn't for us (I don't think) and yes, that would SURE be hard case if it was. Thanks so much @kiwideb you have a great Friday Woo Hoo

We had rain all night, and I thought "oh well that storm wasn't too bad" but that wasn't it. I think it just hit now - literally in the last 5 minutes. It turned black, the wind picked up and down came the rain again. The ground is so wet here too. The path that comes up to our house and two others is getting more and more unstable with each lot of rain, and there have been some more slips on it. Oh well, if we become housebound, we'll just have to spend more time on Steemit...

Wow, hope you've riden that out ok? Just looked out the window. . . .black with rain (sigh) but I got the fire going and all the cats in, so nice and cosy. Keep safe @kiwideb

Looks just like the beach here after a storm even the puffer fish. Not a whole lot of kelp up this way but we do see a little at times. See Ya!

Stunning photos! Those poor little puffer fish! I found one once in Florida, but fortunately, he was still alive so I put him back in the water and watched him swim away.

How great !!! I tried to pick up the smaller one thinking it may still be alive, it was so heavy !!! Thanks so much for the comment. I really appreciate you stopping to look.
