We just caught a couple of these!
These are some pretty cool harmless snakes that we did not meet until we moved to the Ozarks. We had these back in Wisconsin too (supposedly), but I never encountered any. These are rather small, but I tried my best to get some good photos of them prior to releasing them in our garden as part of our "organic pest control" team.
As part of their defense mechanisms, they flip their tail upside-down and coil it, displaying the brilliant red or orange underside. Here are some of my favorite photos.
CUTE! I've actually come across a nest of these before that had like a dozen of these in it. So far the biggest Ring-neck Snake I've ever caught was about a good 15 inches or so. And that was HUGE for these little guys. They rarely get over a foot long but there are big ones out there.
Also, be careful not to let these little guys go near your chicken coup. Chickens will slurp these little guys up like spaghetti.

They get up to about a foot, so this one was shorter.

We saw a pretty long one up in the roof the other day, we were so freaked out, cos we didn't know how to handle a snake and most especially if it was poisonous.
It was however already dead when we finally pulled it down as the sharp edges of the metal and it's belly full of a small chick didn't go well together.
I think more Africans especially Nigerians need more exposure and education to snakes to know the difference and not fear it so much.
Nice post @papa-pepper 😉

I love ring neck snakes! These used to be my little garden buddies in Florida.
I used to find them in my empty nursery pots all the time, both because it is dark and warm, and because they prey on the bugs seeking shelter in them.
I briefly kept one captive in an aquarium, but he was in with a larger snake, so after a few days I caught and released him back into the garden.
I didn't want to be responsible for him getting eaten. He was too pretty. ;-)

Really? Most snakes are pretty harmless I think. What part of the world do you live in? I guess I maybe just grew up around harmless snakes.
