Want to understand... #4 The Oxfam scandal

in news •  7 years ago

Hello guys!

Today I just want to talk to you about an actual issue that I find truly interesting: the humanitarian crisis. You certainly have heard of the event because it has shocked a lot of people. A mission manager in Haïti (after the earthquake of 2010) would have committed some prostitutes in a house that Oxfam was renting for that. It is quite astonishing that these facts only appear now, while apparently, it was a well-known case internally. In fact, it happens in 2011. Some articles even talk about "Oxfam workers having fixed-price sexual relations with survivors of the earthquake in Haiti". This scandal also revealed some numbers: apparently, there are a lot of things like that that are reported for humanitarian organizations.

I have had for the first time some difficulties to understand why and how a humanitarian organization could accomplish such things. Like we all know that soldiers did that in wars and that it was a widespread practice at the time, but here it is with people that are supposed to help people in disaster relief areas. And why anybody did not say anything during all that time? That is why I find interesting to write an article to share with you my researches on the subject!

When you look more closely at the actual humanitarian system you see clearly that there are some issues.

1° Too many actors

The case of Haiti is a great case. A lot of donations have been made, and a huge number of organizations came on the ground to help save people, participate in the rebuilding of Haiti,... Haiti was seen as a "the paradise of the help". More than the half of the American population gives money away to Haiti. For the bigger organizations (like Oxfam), they have a list of objectives to rebuild Haiti, but when we look closer now you see that none of these objectives have been realized. They are not so organized, and all these diverse organizations need one thing: a greater centralization of the help, to prevent the actual situation where everyone works on its side, without caring about making some main and common objectives.

2° "The white rescuer"

Africa has always been seen as a set for the heroism fantasies for the white people. According to an American author, Teju Cole, there is a "complex of the white savior". By saying that, he denounces the fact that the support accorded to the humanitarian help (money, physical,...) is nothing else than a way to satisfy their emotional needs. It can be a factor of what happened in 2011: in general, the international personnel is better paid than the ones that stay in their countries: its disequilibrium can have an effect on how these people see themselves, they can easily have the impression that they can do anything they want on the ground: it is them that have the money. It should also change the vision that we have from African people in disadvantaged zones in general: they are not just "victims", they are humans and they must be treated as anyone else in the world.

And the consequences?

As you can imagine, the 2011 event in Haiti has a great impact on the public opinion. A risk is that people, governments,... can decide to reduce their donations. And it is totally understandable. These people can have the impression that their money is used to abuse other people, while they were giving away their money for helping them. But it will be totally unfair and reckless. I think that it is mostly the old, bureaucratic and unbalanced system of humanitarian organizations that should be put in question, in the same way that the recruitment criteria in these organizations. Non-governmental organizations remain fragile structures. You have to remember that in some terrible situations, their help is vital and must not be deleted or depreciated.

I hope this article helps you understand the situation of humanitarian organizations today!

Greetings from Venezuela I am new to the world steemit

The unfortunate reality about most charitable organizations is seperate levels of corruption.

This article does a great job of not just identifying the issues but brings to light the awareness of such acts within the institution itself. How can any reputable, charitable organization be aware of such abuses taking place within the spectrum of their aid, and do little to nothing to resolve the problem?

Great article

Where did you find those numbers? Most ngo's are transparant enough to give their yearly income and expenses.

If it really was 90% overhead, it would be plastered all over the news.

lol which ngo is transparent? i am no accountant but on paper you can write anything for income or expense. what you actually do with the money is a total different ball game. you do know what gift aid is? If you're a UK taxpayer, Gift Aid increases the value of your charity donations by 25%, because the charity can reclaim the basic rate of tax on your gift? connect all the dots from celebs to all the ngos running. conclusion the money goes in circle and the only cut you give to the government nobody else. its a win win situation. people, organisations, celebs, politicians, elites make more money opening charities then businesses sadly. the rabbit hole is way more deeper than you think

News like this are extremely damaging to the public image of ngo's, most of em rely on gifts rather than government subsidies,
so as you can imagine events like these are a financial nightmare to them. And a good reminder to do more internal housekeeping.

Certain levels of corruption exist in every layer of society, thus also in ngo's.

Do you throw away the whole basket because of one bad apple?

And WWF is pretty straightforward and transparant, received their balance state just yesterday.

If your not trusting parting your money to something you can always donate blood for example or do voluntary work..

fact on that. ever wonder why charity fund raising jobs pay way to more than the actual sales job any where in the world? so who actually is making the money? the fund raiser? the ngo? or the people in need?

Kinda bums me out at times to see stuff like this happening. Haiti has been in a tough series of situations for some time now. I hope solutions that can prove to be based in strengthening the local people while rebuilding a sustainable infrastructure that can withstand nature better. Thanks for sharing this about OxFam. This isn't OK and I appreciate light being shed on issues such as this. We can do better. We will do better.

you did an amazing eye opener post today thanks for sharing it

i didn't knew such thing exists interesting to know about it

glad you are awakened. time to actually do something for humanity. lend your smile to a total stranger. little steps one by one.

Thanks for highlighting this problem. Surely there should be much tighter regulatory control of organisations like Oxfam. Corruption is rife in many of the countries they work in, so it is almost inevitable that our donations are syphoned off to build a palace for some potentate. The UN should do more to make sure the money is used for the right purpose.....otherwise, as you say, the flow of donations will dry up.

you do know the UN is the mother of all corruptions. name one country , city or town where un in any form has ever helped on the basis it was created?

when too many people join it this has to happen :(

first of all good article. but why the surprise. oxfam is not the only one. red cross red crescent all un ngos all over the world are involved in child , women, men trafficking prostitution labour etc. why is it news for one ngo where the old ngos are the foundation of corruption and bring sadness to humanity. thats the real truth. there is no humanity left. only thing is left is what you do with your own hands and soul for another soul. people think just putting coins in donation boxes or dd via bank makes them relief that they are actually doing something for the world. you are absolutely wrong. you do know that all ngos throughout in the world specially in the west have screening centres to determine either you are eligible for help or not? crazy right. thats the right truth in your face. all these so called celebrities begging on screen to please donate. which actors have actually donated to a cause?? ever alist celebrity owns a charity and white washes black money back into his or her charity. why the rich getting richer and poorer oh well lets forget about them what happened to working class? we are a sheep always going to be till we are awakened. no news is news. its late breaking news. and on top of this the actual humanitarian crises in uk are KFC got no fing chickens to feed the customers. compare that with humanity. sorry for the long write up but to be honest we are on our own. no god or aliens or any soul going to help humanity unless we wake up and do our bits what we can so we can look in the mirror and give a pat on our shoulder that yes i actually done something in life by actually feeding someone, clothing someone actually given just a smile or a hug or anything you know better that would make not a big even a little difference for that moment. in the end we all need help one way or the other from fellow human beings
