Congress vote means ISPs have free reign to sell your browsing history information?

in news •  8 years ago

In repealing the Broadband Privacy Rule, it appears that Congress has left a vacuum which gives ISPs carte blanche over how they handle their users data.

I was first alerted of this when I saw this video on Youtube...

Further digging shows...

Right now, ISPs have a pretty free hand when it comes to their subscribers’ data.

  • ISPs can record and sell your browsing history, data on which apps and services you use and so on.
  • ISPs don’t have to tell you what they collect or who they sell it to beyond what they volunteer to say in their privacy policy.
  • ISPs may or may not be required to notify you in case of a breach (this differs state by state).
  • ISPs can still force you to resolve complaints or violations in their internal system via forced arbitration.
  • ISPs could give subscribers a discount for agreeing to share personal information — but why bother when they get it for free?

I made an in-depth commentary on this new bill I think you might like. I attempted to show the good side:

Overall, I'm actually happy this bill went through. I hope you guys can see my side.

Many users do not attach great importance to their privacy
Through the Internet, you can easily get tens of thousands of mass information

Wow. It is really scary how easily it has become to take away a person's right to privacy.

I had an nice little argument with an elder lawyer I worked with (I'm a paralegal), he stated with citations and references I could look up, there is no right to privacy in our constitution. This argument was years ago, if I remember right, I couldn't find any mention of privacy, just papers and property rights.

Yep, it is very true.

Back when things were local, everyone knew where data (gossip) was leaking.
Today, we leave so much data lying around, and no one has any moral convictions.
And there is no recourse. Don't like ma-bell? well, you can go with one of her subsidiaries.

Besides, if you have an account on f-c-book, every site you visit that has a f-c-book plugin gets your f-c-book information, and f-c-book gets a detailed record of where on the internet you went. And a VPN doesn't help with this.

In Croatia nobody cares about piratebay downloads. Not because we are very liberal on the topic but because nobody wants to bother to open the discussion :D
