OKAY - THAT WAS NOT A GOOD IDEA!

in ouch •  7 years ago

Normally, I try not to bleed from the face.

So, there I was, heading down on the land to check on the sheep. It was dark, and it was raining. Suddenly, I saw an Opossum near the garden site and was overcome with a desire to get him away from the area...

YEAH, DUMB IDEA

Running through the woods with low visibility is not a good idea. Especially in areas where there is a lot of green briers. Soon, my poor face was pulled across a green brier vine.

This stuff is basically the barbed wire of the woods. It'll grab hold of you and tear your flesh open if you run into it. We hope to eventually phase it out and remove it from the homestead, but so far it is still growing all over the place. On the bright side, I did get rid of that Opossum, but lost more blood than I would have preferred to in the process.

@Bluerthangreen and I had just been talking about all the movies where they show people running through the woods. He mentioned that they must be somewhere further north, because you wouldn't be able to make it through our woods! Indeed my friend, indeed!

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Until next time…

Sorry buddy, you gonna be healed soon. Just take care of the wound.

This is such a great post. I'm sure that almost everybody reading it had a flashback to some point where they encountered one of natures nasty defenses. I know I did! Sorry about your misfortune but this post made me smile. I'm sharing one back with you! Complete with a papa-pepper 'selfie smile' and a thorny reminder of your night!

Thanks for firing up the nostalgia projector!

Nice! Thanks for the smile!

I once ran through the woods in the dark to rescue my sister who got her foot caught between two logs while we were hiking. I tripped over a branch and fell to my knees. It was a swampy area so when my left knee got very wet immediately, I didn't think anything of it. It hurt a little but I thought I must have hit another log or something. I quickly found my sister, got her foot free and help her back to the house. As we got into the lighted area I noticed that the wet spot was very dark. When we got to the house I discovered the wet spot was a 5" section of blood. There was a tear in my jeans and underneath was 2" very deep gash in my knee. It was bleeding profusely and pressure wasn't stopping it. My other sister called my parents who were visiting neighbors. They took me to the emergency room where I got ten stitches. There were a lot of discarded bottles in the woods from occupants of an old house that had burned down years before we moved into ours. So I must have fallen onto some broken glass. So, no it is not a good idea to run through the woods with low visibility. :-D Ps.that was in upstate NY.

Thank goodness @roswellrockman your love for your sister must have numbed every pain and perhaps all the adrenaline. You must be your sisters hero

Point taken! You should have told me first and I could have avoided my mishap!

Be Safe!...:)...

Damn! That must hurt

Dude that is a rough happening from just trying to get work done. Glad you have a good attitude (best you can) about it.

Looks like wild blackberry, loves the taste of blood, and tries to slow you down so it can have some more.
We have a similar NZ native, usually called "Bush Lawyer". the "Wait A Moment Vine" if you stop and go out slowly, backwards it doesn't rip too much, try and muscle through it and it tears clothes, skin, meat, and if it has a chance, bones from you.
It also works in daylight so you have to be careful all the time.

Lol...the "Wait a Moment Vine". Great description! I'm going to remember that name while dealing with roses and raspberries, which definitely make you take your time if you don't want to be skewered.

Called the " bush lawyer" because the start of their argument is * Wait a moment, the law says .....

Ouch! get well soon, @papa-pepper! we also have plants with spikes, for example wild rose or mulberry. And, of course, nettles, with suddenly and very painful effect!

I love nettles! My favorite plants!

Sorry about the tear @papa-pepper, get better soon.

Bad luck! I got my leg nailed by this the other day. I decided to do a bare foot walk not a great idea either. Horrible stuff 💯🐒

Yeah, it's a beast!

surely you do not realize it when running because you focus on what you are after, but I know the wound is very poignant @papa-pepper

Woooo, ..... are you good just a terrible thorn ...😲

Yeah, thorns to the face!

In the Southern US, there is no such thing as "just" a thorn! Thorns are savage things and they are easy to find when your attention is on something else.

We have those in Indiana as well. They can be rough for sure.

Safety Third!!!!
Be careful buddy 😜

Whoopsie! That is bad...:(

Oh shit you are bleeding 😥 don't try to go in out their in Dark @papa-pepper because it's really dangerous some times.

So sorry @papa-pepper. Am sure it won't happen again

It'll probably happen again...

Lol! You sound so certain!

Helo papa

Papa's-peepers can still see! Thank the Boss!

Meh, you just needed a story for today^^

OUCH!

I nearly lost an eye moving through the wood in the dark. A twig poked right into it, leaving a bit of bark in the socket under my eyeball.

It took DAYS for that sucker to work its way out, and I learned a very painful lesson.

I'm sure your 'adventure' is a good lesson for the little peppers to take note of. I'm sure they don't want to get caught up in the briers and get left dangling while a possum nibbles on their toes...

Wow. @papa-pepper be more careful thank God it didn't do too much damage to your face. Lol. I guess they would have taken alot of precautions in all those movies stunts of running through the bushes. Thanks. Always love to read your posts.

Oh my!. That definitely hurts. Really sorry about that Papa. This is actually what makes you different Papa. You don't only let us know the things you have done right, you also make us see the seemingly not so good ideas. I really admire this a lot.
Really sorry about your face and really glad it's not more than this. Take good care sir.

Not much fun and, for som reason they hurt more than similar things!

LOL Scars from doing things like that are visual reminders to not do things like that... Sorta like the 20/20 hindsight of education...
In the south the saying is: Stings, sticks, stabs and bites yup that is the south! Makes you appreciate the determination of the ancestors.

Maybe you need to buy a big torch before going to the woods next time.

Nasty our woods is full of thorny vines that seem to want to strangle all the trees. Makes me want a flamethrower. Sadly I think the fire department would take issues with that. I had to settle for a machete instead which did not live up to my expectations.

I hear you on that. Also, nice new avatar you've got there!

Thanks, I spiced up my old avatar to add some extra flare to it. Think I need to play around with it a tad more but for now I’m happy with it.

Ouch, I always warn you when you work always have to be careful.
But fortunately you are not exposed to the eyes,Is the wound serious?

I think that the wound is not too serious. As long as I avoid infection.

Good, I'm glad to hear it.

Eyahh sorry for the accident bro, you have go to be really careful next time papa.

I know, I should be careful.....

Wow friend be careful the face is very delicate in the body of a person I hope it does not happen again takes with you if you return to pass a flashlight or do it calmly watch your face I hope you better

I first had a bit of a laugh, now I only feel sympathy. Treat those wounds well, @papa-pepper, you do not want to have it infected. Tea tree oil is anti-inflammatory and prevents scars. But I bet you know that anyway.

Glad you got rid of the possum, though. I love your "proof" photo. You look like someone promoting a horror story. Very fitting, seeing that you referred to horror movies.

Yeah, infections of the face are not fun! LOL! Thanks

A good bleed from the face is important sometimes. Hopefully there is knowledge to gain. But at the very least, it makes a great steemit post.

Sorry for your pain. You can encourage this stuff to grow along a border to keep undesirables out.

Dont forget the nice part about multiflora rose. It is their toxic season so even more of the itchy festering bull sh*t to annoy you more.

Hey man that was really scary. I'm glad that you okay though 👊🏾

Imagine those things growing in your fence?
