My Strange Neighborhood

A vintage sewing table is the main element of this social gathering spot where elderly men often meet to drink rakia (Bulgarian fruit brandy) and talk. The empty cheese tins and the beer bottles are permanent parts of the decor. The place is sheltered by thick bushes.

Another peculiar sight is a rusty old car, which is taking one of the few parking places. It has been there ever since I moved here four years ago. I wonder what happened to the owner.

A neatly stacked pile of trash, right across the street. I have no explanation as to why there are so many toilet bowls. Also, I can't help but associate them with Steemit's trending page.

Cats seem to love this place.

I wish I kept my camera in hand a little longer because the owner looked exactly like his dog.

Are there any peculiar sights in your neighborhood?

Thanks for stopping by!

The only difference is that toilet bowls had once been useful.

I wish I kept my camera in hand a little longer because the owner looked exactly like his dog.

I still wonder why I keep feeling that people after a while look like their belongings especially pets and cars.

I still wonder why I keep feeling that people after a while look like their belongings especially pets and cars.

There must be a scientific explanation about that, lol 😁

I think science would disprove such things. :)

the car is super nice. a guess the old man has always been there sins there where not so old. and the place is just getting old to.

I am very glad that you liked the car 😊 I took the shot trough the green bushes that separate the sidewalk from the parking lot. Good guess - I also think the guy has been living there for a loong long time :)

As an American who's never left America and is fascinated by other places and other cultures, that was fascinating to me.

If you have the chance, where would you like to go first? :)

Although Bulgaria has become westernized after the fall of communism in the late 80's, many facets of our society are still starkly different to what you have in the US :) I am sure you'll have a lot of fun if you decide to visit the Balkans.

I would love to go to Hawaii, and I would love to go to India, Scotland, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Costa Rica..... where wouldn't I like to go! 😉

INTERESTING! I really don't know anything about Bulgaria.

I'd also love to visit Hawaii and Costa Rica :) As for Bulgaria, it's a very old country with rich history :)

Good to know! So much to see in the world and experience. I just can't even imagine what it would be like to be there and smell the smells and meet the people. I imagine each culture is so much different than another. It would change me so much.

That is a strange neighborhood. The old guys drinking rakia reminds me of a few places in Jerez, Spain, where the old guys would play dominoes and drink beer all day long. I'm surprised the local authorities haven't removed that car. It's cool-looking, though!

As for the Steemit trending page... lol!

Nice photos, Dan!

Thanks, man! I think it would be fair to say that the local authorities don't care much about such things :)

Haha, I saw a lot of guys playing games and drinking beer in the shades when I visited my father in Palma :) It almost felt like time had stopped.

Since I live in Romania I have some peculiar sights also...but haven't shared them. I did shared some smartphone photography I took around my small town. We have also rakia( it is called rachie in Romanian) it has some "alcohol power" in it.
Have a great evening neighbor!

Oh, please post it! I'm so interested in a glimpse into people's everyday lives around the world!

Check my blog. I have some pictures posted over there but nothing peculiar. Maybe one day...

Hey @acesontop, I thought Romania's national alcoholic drink has another name, am I mistaken? :) I was in Bucharest a few months ago, and I can confirm that there are some similarities to Sofia. Where are you from?

Thanks for your comment and have a nice weekend!

That rakia of yours is "rachie" or "tuica" at us. There is also some stronger version of it called "palinca"(60+°). I am from a small town near Danube in the SW of Romania called Orsova. Have a great weekend you too!

Yes! It's the palinca that I know and have tried :) Never heard of this town before, but quick search on google revealed a fascinating rock sculpture. Wow!

P.S. The monastery nearby also looks nice :)

Yes the area around it is very nice. I posted in the past some pictures that I took while going with the boat in the area. It's full of tourists in summer to visit that sculpture. Is the highest in Europe. I will make some future posts with more photos in about two weeks when a friend of mine who has a boat will come home. We are going to fish for some good days around the area.

Plenty! I would be risking life and camera most of the time to document them, though. I have done a few, you have inspired me to do more

you have inspired me to do more

Really? I am so glad to hear that :))

Is it that dangerous to walk around with a camera in Johannesburg? 😯

In my neighbourhood, yes - definitely no shortage of muggers. But it's not like that everywhere. Technically, my suburb is part of the inner city and it is generally run down and poor

Hi Dan, hope you are doing great, I'm feeling better most of the days :)) Great photos of your Bulgaria! Today I'm exceptionally asking you for a favor, your further support to please go and vote my comment on this qurator post I've been nominated! It's a thrill! Thanks in advance! Take care!

PS: clicked unfollow while trying to get back to my blog! It was just my slow internet not reacting on time ;)! Refollowing!

Hey, Isabel - this is good news! I am doing great, thanks :) I voted on your comment 👏

Thanks so much, Dan, I knew I could count on you! You are always there for me :)))! Cheers, my friend!

Nice quip at the trending page, but you may have been to generous. I've seen some toilet bowls used as flower pots in yards around here.

Great photos as usual, you always do a great job of telling the story with your photographs.

Dude, toilet bowl flower pots? That's grotesque! 😁

Thank you so much! 🙇 I think the first photo would have been better if the guys were in it. But if they were actually sitting there, drinking and talking, I would have probably not taken a photo. See, I am afraid to point my camera at people...

I think the toilet bowl flower pots were a trend that never should've caught on. but if you google "toilet planter" you will see what I am talking about.

Here I was all along thinking I was the only photographer who was scared to point my camera at others. It makes me nervous for some reason.

I just googled the toilet planters 🚽 I don't understand how there are people in this world who like such stuff.

I dunno if it's the same for you, but for me, the biggest fear is that I might end up having a confrontation with the people I am taking pictures of. Maybe a longer 150mm + lens could solve this problem?

I don't know if it's the confrontation I fear, but maybe just the awkwardness of it.

Depending on the situation a longer lens could be helpful but that also intimidates people more. Usually no body says a thing to me when I am walking around with my phone but my dslr draws attention.

Ha ha the comparison between the toilet bowls the trending page made me laugh!! Random stuff like this can be great fun to photograph..

Haha 😁 I love making such comparisons. I bet there aren't many such sights in Ireland :))

You know something there actually are, especially 3rd and 4th photo... Not so common anymore, but some people fly tip and dump things, especially in the countryside or out of view from people... Instead of paying to send it to the dump, they throw it away in the countryside someplace..

I think that I am the only peculiar sight in my neighborhood. My uncle's wife can't even look at me.

Jesus... I am sorry to say this, but I think your uncle's wife is just stupid :/

Your pictures are always so fascinating. They pull me in. But your stories are always so great, I keep lingering. I'm going to have to look in my area and see what I can find. But unless I can come up with a great story like yours. I'm sure it look like trash. Now I really want to know what the man looks like.

Heey, @womanchild! I am glad that you liked the photos, but they are nothing special, to be honest. Plus, there isn't much of a story to back them up :) Don't shy away from posting what you find in your area - I am sure it will be interesting!

The trending page comment got me! Hah it’s sad that it’s a pissing match for who can use the most voting bots.

Haha, I knew there will be some reactions to the trending page comment :)) Bot vote stacking is very sad, indeed.

Interesting photographs @irreverent-dan. Is this Sofia (I noticed the tag). 😊

We were there a few years ago for a couple of nights before touring around Bulgaria.

Thanks Gillian 😊 It is Sofia indeed. I know that you visited Bulgaria a few years ago, but I can't remember if I ever asked you more about the trip...

Well I've obviously forgotten that I told you I'd been to Bulgaria so there's no way I can remember if you asked me about it or not. 😂

Are you from Sofia originally?

Nope, I am from Plovdiv :)

See. This is what happens when you disappear for weeks on end @irreverent-dan, I start repeating myself.

This is another conversation that, now I think about it, I'm sure we've had before. 😂

It's the middle of the summer, you cannot expect me to be active on Steemit, haha :)

It's all right for some. 😁

I look forward to the days when I too can walk away and still keep Steemit ticking over. (Not that I'm bitter and twisted and full of envy however). 😂

I'm sure it will come when the price of Steem rises but for now I'm still trying to claw my way up to 1000SP.

Oh well. Can't hang around chatting. I got a post to write.

Have a lovely summer's day in Plovdiv. 😁

Enjoyable peek into your life there.
I especially like the composition and shadows of the car photo!

I am very glad that you like it @bananamemos :) it's my favorite of the bunch! 😊

That's interesting. That brandy is called rachiu in Romanian :) As about the neighborhood you posted about, I'm pretty sure I can find it in Romania as well :)

Yes, probably in Bucharest and the cities around the border. I think that the further you go North, the more different Romania becomes. Am I right? :)

Do you like drinking rachiu? Lol

Yes, you're absolutely right! 🙂
No, I don't really like alcohol. If I drink, I'd rather choose a good wine or a martini 😇
What about you? I've seen you like 🍺

I used to drink everything, but nowadays, I am mostly into wine and beer :)

Then you must know every type of drink :)

Yo Dan, I'm glad to see that you're out and about... peeking thru bushes and taking provocative pics. I was thinking about you today. I've taken a three month job at Navajo Nation Reservation in Arizona and it's unique, for me. So, I was thinking: "Dan would love to take pictures here." I'll post some pictures from time to time and see what you think of the area. Cheers Dude!

Yo man! I just checked the place and it looks so awesome! What will you be doing there?

Well, I'm a dentist, so I'm working at their clinic. Option to stay longer - we'll see. For the first week I've been settling in and decompressing. And, currently watching Deadpool.
Took some pics this morning.

Imgur

I thought you'd like it. The picture makes it look a lot greener here than it is. I look forward to some more of your posts. Cheers and happy picturing.

I would have never guessed that you are a dentist :)) Well, I hope there won't be many patients to stress you out and that you enjoy your time there :)
Is this a barn of some sort? I like it!
