Aegina is one of the Saronic Islands of Greece one hour away from Athens. The story has it that the name of the island derives from Aegina the mother of the hero Aeacus, who was born on the island and became its king. During ancient times Aegina was a rival of Athens, the great sea power of the era.
It is a unique destination for everybody who wants to take a break from the daily routine. You visit a beautiful island that is really close to Athens and even for one day, you feel you are on holidays!
One of the most visited sites on Aegina is the monastery of Agios Nektarios. Agios Nektarios of Aegina (1846-1920), is one of the most widely known Greek Orthodox Saints. Thousands of people from all over the world go to Aegina to visit his tomb to pray.
You can enjoy beautiful walks at the port and drink your coffee by the sea...
Or stroll around the alleys...
...where you will find local stores to get some delicious pistachios and other goodies made of them...

I have the same feeling when I go to Vilamoura here in portugal, the whole place is full of tourists, it has a holiday/ vacation type feeling that i can't get anywhere else in portugal!!

We also eat salted pistachios but those in the picture are spoon-sweets :) In Greece they are very popular and they are made also from fruits..
