Penguin populations in the western Pole and the Scotia Sea have fallen by 50 percent in the last 30 years. Food shortages and increasing populations of whales are blamed for the cause.
Fish biologist Wayne Z. Trivelpiece of the National Marine Fisheries Service in La Jolla, California, United States, mentions that young penguins are difficult to survive in their first winter. "They're having trouble finding food," Trivelpiece said.
