Hey Everyone, I am excited to present to you Prepper Cook-Off Challenge #2.

Test your cooking skills by trying to prepare the most palatable meal out of two random storable food items.

CookoffPhoto by Teddy Kelley on Unsplash

Many of us in the homesteading community have prepping tendencies so I decided to come up with a challenge that plays off of those habits, and requires both luck and skill. This challenge will be a fun test of your ability to utilize storable items in a SHTF scenario. lf you aren't into prepping, that is OK you might still find this entertaining.

The Prizes

With so many quality entries the first time around I have upped the prize pool significantly for this Cook-Off Challenge.

  • 1st Prize - 10 STEEM + 15 SBI
  • 2nd Prize - 5 STEEM + 10 SBI
  • 3rd Prize - 3 STEEM + 5 SBI
  • Most Gag Worthy - 1 STEEM + 3 SBI
  • Most Creative - 1 STEEM + 3 SBI
  • All other qualified entries - 1 SBI

What is @steembasicincome (SBI)? It is a program where you sponsor people by buying them shares. Both the sponsor and the sponsored get a share which provides continued upvotes to member content.

The Scenario

EMPSource

In the near future, a massive EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) from the sun has knocked out the electrical grid and the world has devolved into chaos. After hunkering down for awhile, and running short on food, you managed to scavenge a couple of long-term storable food items from nearby buildings and then returned to your home base to prepare the food for yourself and the other members of your group (Prepper Cook-Off Challenge #1).

Since then, marauding gangs have taken over the area you are in; it is no longer safe where you are located. Their numbers are too great and a confrontation would not turn out well for you and your small group. Under the cover of darkness, you flee bringing only what you can carry. You had planned on going to what you thought was a safe secondary location but the bridge you needed to cross has been destroyed.

A small unmaintained road near this bridge leads into the woods and you decide to take it, not wanting to stay exposed out in the open too long. After walking for many hours, you stumble upon this cabin.

Cabin In the WoodsPhoto by Nathan Dumlao on Unsplash

You and your group watch from a distance. After awhile, you are satisfied that it has been abandoned and decide to explore it further. The prior occupants are gone and they have taken pretty much all the food with them. Luckily, you manage to find a single item sitting on a shelf in the kitchen (Item 1). You also notice that the majority of shelf stable spices and condiments are still in the cupboard.

Item 1Photo by Calum MacAulay on Unsplash

There must be more food somewhere though and you continue to search the cabin, eventually finding a floor hatch with a small staircase under it. (Cue @revisesociology's warnings about The Road's cellar scene)

CellarSource

It ends up being a root cellar (whew!). It also looks empty but after rummaging around in the darkness for a bit you find a small wooden crate with another food item (Item 2).

You also had a single food item you packed in your bug out bag when you fled your previous location (Bonus Item). With these three items you figure you should be able to cobble up some sort of meal. You and your companions are tired and hungry from your travels and it is time to cook!

How to Enter

Note: The rules have been slightly revised since the last Prepper Cook-Off Challenge. Make sure to read them entirely before entering.

1. In the comments section declare that you are entering and summon the random dice generator by mentioning @rolltwodice in your comment. Match the dice roll to the list below to see which items you found.

Dice 1 (Item 1)

  1. Dry Rice
  2. Dried Black Beans
  3. Dried Spaghetti
  4. Flour
  5. Oatmeal
  6. Canned Diced Tomatoes

Dice 2 (Item 2)

  1. Potatoes
  2. Carrots
  3. Onions
  4. Apples
  5. Winter Squash
  6. Sweet Potato

2. After thinking about what you want to try making with the items you rolled choose your 3rd item (Bonus Item) by declaring it in a reply to your first comment. This item can basically be anything that can be stored without freezing or refrigeration for 6 months or longer. Hopefully this will allow you to make the first two items complimentary.

I have tried to keep this challenge as inclusive as possible and realize that some participants may have dietary restrictions or live in parts of the world where these food items are not available or affordable. If you do, I will try and provide a suitable substitute but you have to declare the restriction before you roll.

If, for example, you are gluten intolerant and you let me know before rolling then I would allow a substitution of gluten free spaghetti or noodles and a gluten free flour. However, these substitutions are up to my discretion and I have to be careful not to take them too far in fairness to the other competitors.

3. Cooking oils, sugar, salt and spices are permitted but they must be used in a reasonable amount. You can't use so much that they become a main item.

  • Herbs are fine as long as they are dried or in some other shelf stable form. No fresh ingredients. They have to be storable.
  • Stock cube is fine.
  • Corn starch or other starches used as thickeners or binders are OK if only a tbsp or two.
  • Wine, hard liquor, or vinegar is fine but keep the combined liquid condiments to a shot glass worth. The idea is that they don't contribute much to the meal other than some flavor. Once again, they need to be shelf stable so sauces and condiments kept in the refrigerator are not permitted.
  • If it isn't obvious, water can be used in any quantity.

4. If for some reason you really don't want the items you rolled you cannot re-roll but you can trade them if you can find someone to trade with. You must trade both items, you cannot trade one or the other that would make the challenge too easy!

Remember that you are allowed to select a third storable item (bonus item) of your choosing and use spices. You may be able to get creative and make poor item combinations work.

5. Create a post where you cook your meal and describe the ingredients and steps that you used to do it. It could be a single dish or two or more. It is up to you as long as you stick to your ingredients.

6. One of your tags needs to be #preppercookoff so I can find all the entries.

7. Mention and link to this post in your entry post.

8. You have until June 23 at 11:59pm MST (UTC -7) to submit your entry.

The Judging

I will be picking the winners for this Prepper Cook-Off Challenge. I thought of maybe having people upvote entries but it seemed too easy to abuse and unfair to newer Steemians that aren't well known yet.

I will be judging based on a number of factors as follows:

  • Overall quality of post and effort level.
  • Was the meal preparation well documented.
  • Difficulty of items rolled.
  • Creativity of item use and how the meal was prepared. Utilizing off grid cooking and preparation will be scored higher.
  • Staying in character and adding to the storyline details.
  • Presentation of the meal. Photo quality, plating, etc.

I will score each factor on a scale on 1-10 and the highest total scores will win. There are also prizes for most creative meal and most gag worthy meal. These are more subjective and won't necessarily be scored on the same point system.

Conclusion

Hopefully, that all makes sense. If not, take a look at the first Prepper Cook-Off Challenge Winning Posts.

1. @tacostate - Prepper Party Food - Caraway and Fennel Crackers & Bean Dip

2. @sagescrub - Mushroom Risotto - A Hippy Prepper's Survival Meal

3. @roselyn028 - my very own Rice and peanuts is equal to rise crispies for #preppercookoff

I will also be participating just for fun so you can always watch and see what I end up doing. I am hoping to see a lot of friendly competition and interaction.

I am sure there will be some pretty interesting ingredient combinations. Time to get cooking everyone!

Thank you for participating!

The selections look a little easier this time round.... blander, but less likely to clash....

@rolltwodice

I'm going for cashew nuts as my third option

I would agree. In the first one I tried to throw in a few things to intentionally make for some poor combinations. This time around because I wanted to include root cellar items I ended up going with more basic staple items on both lists. Which ends up being pretty bland.

I'm quite comfortable with bland!

Carrots, and spaghetti, I'm going for cashews as my third

Good morning, and here is my entry:

Spontaneous summer solstice bug out meal

I posted it on DLive rather than DTube, because I have found the basic difference to be that @Dlive DOES WORK while @Dtube doesn't work.

At some point you'll have to explain to how you actually manage to upload videos to DTube - nothing ever uploads for me. DLive on the other hand, now that's never failed!

It's a shame really, because this is precisely the kind of silly video that I'd like to disappear at some point, as Dtube guarantees, while I think DLive might actually be immutable. But after you've tried and failed 6 times to upload various different versions and got nowhere, and then DLive just works first time - 'so be it!'.

Cheers!

Let's see what happens. @rolltwodice

Oatmeal and apples?! I guess well matched ingredients make the challenge more difficult in some ways.

That's actually not too bad for ingredient combinations. We'll see what you come up with!

Thanks for this. It was fun. Here's my entry: apples and oats. It was lunch time and I had the ingredients, so I made quick work of it. I'd make it again.

Well done, entry accepted. Too bad there is no early bird prize!

Looks amazing!!!

Annearly bird prize... hmmm good idea! That apple and oats looks good!

there are always creative ideas from you ,, it is amazing

a tremendously interesting challenge, but all the materials you mentioned I have never encountered in my place

That is too bad. Sorry, it is hard to try and accommodate everyone without making the game too complicated...

That's some crazy give-aways! Wish I had the time to enter! :)

For now I'm just here to spread word of my Contest-contest, create a SBI Contest and win (lots of) SBI! 26 SBI to give away I hope to see you enter :)

Trying to reward people for creating their own contests and spread SBI as far and wide as possible!!!

Unfortunately I don't have time to run another contest right now but that is a good idea.

Great idea what a cool challenge 💡. @swt3df1

Pointless haiku bot,
Please take your poems away.
You're not welcome here.

Re-steem it for more visibility @canadianrenegade

Thank you!

It is getting more excited cooking game. I am really interesting this time @canadianrenegade, please roll the dice for me @rolltwodice. thank you very much.

Ow ow @canadiarenegade that is really die lands, I cannot find Black bean in my area, for apple that is ok though little expensive in my place...:D, this getting more funnnnn

Ok my friend @canadianrenegade my cook is ready and making a post about that, FYI my 3rd item is cheese. I hope that is Okay

I don't think cheese follows the rules... It is supposed to be shelf stable. :(

Ow ow..:(, I thought it was good to go because this kind of febricated cheese (processed cheddar cheese) I saw in the market they put on the shelf for months out side of refrigerator. But it is alright if i dont meet the requirement...you can disqualify my entry my friend @canadianrenegade

DSC_0001.jpg

We don't really have cheese like that here in Canada. All of ours needs to be refrigerated. I looked that type of cheese up and it is indeed shelf stable. So you are qualified.

Can you edit your post and maybe add that picture and explain that it is shelf stable so there is no confusion from the other contestants?

Sure, I can. I will let you know once it finished @canadianrenegade

I would be willing to trade if you prefer. (Rule 4) I rolled flour and apples.

can we trade black bean with flour @canadianrenegade??, and my question: is the apple fresh or dry or canned apple??, because it is really fun for me for new thing in cooking. thank you

Yeah we can trade. It's supposed to be both items but since we both rolled apples it will really just be beans for flour.

If you can get fresh apples that would be best. I would even be willing to help you pay for the apples if they are too expensive in your region, since I know you. How much do apples cost where you live?

sound nice, okay then we trade. and it is a lot more fun to practice it. thank for your offer, i will handle it myself @canadianrenegade. thank you very much...next week I will cook for about 2 thousands of guest approximately, I hope everything gonna be alright for the party.

2000! That is a lot of people. Wow.

Love this idea Aimee. Your introductory story is riveting. It'll be exciting to get "in character" and add a sequel in everyone's post! I'm going to use our solar cooker (well the abandoned cottages solar cooker ;) What a great way to get people's mind around the prepper idea without the doomsday aspect. So here goes @rolltwodice

You blow on two 6-sided dice, and throw:

First die lands...
You rolled a 6.

Second die lands...
You rolled a 3.

Hmmmm....canned diced tomatoes and onions. Not very filling. I'm really going to have to scratch my head over those ingredients

Remember that you get a third item of your choice as long as it is shelf stable.

That's a relief! I don't know how long I could last on onions and (probably gmo) tinned tomato - yuck. Am I allowed to forage? We have some interesting tuber and wild herb type foods in certain areas in SA.

No foraging in this version of the Prepper Cook-off Challenge unless you foraged previously and have preserved the food by canning, drying or some other method. But then that would count as your bonus item unless they are herbs or spices.

I will be basing a future version of the challenge around foraging.

Actually it is Matthew this time. Although Aimee has been posting more then me lately so I don't blame you for assuming this is Aimee's post. 😁

Oh. Sorry Matthew! Ok. So no foraging. I'm thinking of going with chickpeas as my bonus item. I think you call them garbanzo beans? Alternatively lentils?

I here them called both chickpeas and garbanzo beans around here.

Either the chickpeas or the lentils would be fine.

You blow on two 6-sided dice, and throw:

First die lands...
You rolled a 4.

Second die lands...
You rolled a 4.

Looks like this roll makes up for what I got in the first challenge. Going to plan this one out real well Mwahaha!

I absolutely love how you introduced this.... and eek... The Road!!! Here goes nothing... @rolltwodice

You blow on two 6-sided dice, and throw:

First die lands...
You rolled a 5.

Second die lands...
You rolled a 1.

So... @canadianrenegade .. I'm new to this but dies this mean I can choose 1 more item? To go with the oatmeal and potatoes?

Yes, you can choose 1 more shelf stable item of your choice (doesn't have to be on these lists). Also you can make a single dish or multiple dishes if you want to.

Fun!!!! So i have to announce this item in advance??? Sorry... tthe instructions are long and I dont want to screw up.

As long as you declare the item before you post your entry you should be good. Theoretically you should post it before trying to cook your meal but I have no way of knowing.

😉😉😉

I'm going to go with coconut cream (tin) - aaah - and I have til the 23rd right? xx

Also - ghee is shelf stable - would that maybe be on the shelf with the spices, condiments, vinegars and so on? ;) pretty please? It's on my shelf stable shelf :)

Ouch... oatmeal and patatoes! I gues you were in England a while, I'm sure you'll find something good.

Hello Aimee dear! Welcome back #preppercookoff interesting and a bit scary as always, same as the first contest I'm a bit afraid I might not make it to produce one, I was so scared to try but good luck to me.. I will give it a try and hopefully I can make it to participate.

Go @rolltwodice

You blow on two 6-sided dice, and throw:

First die lands...
You rolled a 2.

Second die lands...
You rolled a 5.

Well you did pretty good the first time. I know it is hard as most of these items are more common western foods.

I do not know how to make food. I do not have as much hope as a reward.

Does someone else cook for you?

I think, if you were in a survival situation, maybe you'd try? that could be fun!

Woohoo!!! I did it... didn't think i'd have time to but here it is:
https://steemit.com/food/@senorcoconut/a-prepper-cook-off-challenge-i-m-making-smoked-oysters-in-rice-with-seet-potato

Thank you Renegade, this was really fun to make!

I haven't had time to read it but it looks like a great entry. Wasn't the easiest ingredient combo either with two starches to deal with. Thanks for accepting the challenge!

Absolutely, you're welcome! At least it was sweet potato and not white!

Thanks for your entry. I haven't had time to read the whole thing yet but when I skimmed it, it looked pretty good!

Oh, and you actually had a bit over a day left when you entered so not super last minute!

It was already the morning of the 23rd in the futureland in which I live...😂💚 Enjoy the entries... did you do yours? Xx

I figured it was a time zone thing. My entry will be posted in about a half hour. I wanted to do it earlier but was too busy as usual 😣

I'll probably procrastinate my entry again but love the challenge. Give good ingredients @rolltwodice

CONGRATULATIONS!
Your post is featured in my Preppers' Curation Day- Weekly Edition 15 post today as bonus post!

That's awesome, thanks for featuring us again!

Again... awesome story line... Alright, I'm putting myself in the senario. We got to this cabin and the root cellar and @rolltwodice

You blow on two 6-sided dice, and throw:

First die lands...
You rolled a 1.

Second die lands...
You rolled a 6.

Oooh... rice and sweet potato! Let me think a moment for my third ingredient. So we have a can of oysters in oil. I think I'll use that to make it interesting. It that ok @canadianrenegade? They're like tuna cans only they're oysters

That sounds awesome. Geez - oysters for the end of the world?? Doesn't sound too bad...

Did you see... the can of oysters were 1 year past their best by date. It's been two days now and I'm still alive and feeling great!

Thank god!!! Didnt spot that one... now... if it was death by expired oysters... how would we know???

Did you know they were expired beforehand?

Yep... I did know. But I thinknI've eaten worst stuff before, maybe not in the seafood department though. Cans last for ever no?

Yeah use by dates are so arbitary. If it smells good and looks good its good...

Lol, yep always the smell test!

Interested to see what you do with these ingredients!

Hehe it was very interesting to come up with what to write too!
