The Human Need for Validation. Why Can't I Let Go of What Others Think?

in psychology •  8 years ago

Everyone has heard the cliche "just be yourself". Most of us have experienced moments of not giving a fuck what others think. Yet, for me and others like me, it is still a constant challenge to let go of what others think. Even the expectations and thoughts of strangers may weigh on our mind at times.

Now the question becomes, if I know I shouldn't care what others think, but I still do anyways, how can I stop caring? I believe all humans need and crave some validation. For this reason instead of completely fighting this need i believe it is better to regulate where you get it from. To further explain, first we must define a core set of values in our lives (for example the value of loving one another). Then we must seek people who validate positive attributes within ourselves that align with our core values. Furthermore, having a strong sense of what one values creates a dynamic where one can validate themselves in a more empowering way.
