After I left the movie, I said pretty much the same thing. It felt empty. But when I started to write my review, it began to make more sense as commentary about different themes from nowadays, like immigration, prejudice and misogyny. It's between the lines, I Believe. Nothing exceptional, for sure, but it felt less empty to me.
But I totally understand your feeling.

Probably you are right. Perhaps I should not relate to this picture so critically and the director left in it the hidden meaning that you mentioned. If this is true, then the film will certainly become more complete and attractive.
