Adventures of Elena Temple is a cheap game that has one interesting idea with a bit more than "okay" execution.
This post is part of my "First Impression" series:
I'll be playing & posting about as many games from my backlog. I'll write about them and think whether I'd try finishing them or not. Though many of them are from Indiegala.
Same Game, Multiple Systems
"The classic you never knew existed, on old machines that kind of, sort of, maybe existed." --- Steam Page
The adventures of Elena Temple is a game within a game. In the story, the creator of the titular game had a bad luck of releasing their game on bad systems that no one plays.
So, you control one of the players who got their hand on Elena Temple and you get to play it on different systems. While the graphics changes between a device and the other, the game is basically the same. You can change between the systems without losing save data.
An explorer named Elena goes into a dungeon to earn gold and wealth, but she was late to realize that the way in isn't the way out. So she goes to find the exit while collecting what she can of fortune.
"Before Lara & Nate... There was Elena." --- Opening
On the gameplay side, I liked the game, it's a puzzle platformer where you have to find the exit while avoiding traps and defeating enemies. The gameplay kinda reminds me of the old school games like Super Mario Bros.
You have a gun but the ammo isn't always affordable, the max ammo you can have at a time is two bullets so you have to choose carefully when to use them to fight enemies and solve puzzles.
Final Thoughts
The game does a good job of scratching the retro itch for #retrogaming players. The idea of changing the graphic of the game to different choices is a great idea and I loved to read how every version came to be.
This made me think on how many games that are better but their presentation failed them, like many games from indiegala bundles that aren't just asset-flips.
Will I try to complete this game?
Though I'll recommend it for platform retro gaming lovers.
