Neural connections also work wirelessly

Neurons are the cells that make up the nervous system, whose main function is to receive, process and transmit information through chemical and electrical signals through connections called synapses.

When a neuron receives information, it is sent to other neurons through its axons, which are an extension of neurons specialized in conducting the nerve impulse to another cell.

In this way, brain activity is made possible, allowing us to perceive the environment, move, experience sensations and, ultimately, be aware of our lives.

Well, it seems that now neurologists have discovered that this is not the only way that nerve cells communicate with each other and with other cells, be they nerve, muscle or glandular.

According to this discovery, communication between neurons can also be done wirelessly, even if an area of the brain has been amputated, apparently by jumping in a vacuum.

When the neurons are activated, they generate very weak electric fields that are the ones that are registered when we do an electroencephalogram (EEG), generating patterns that experts can then analyze.

Scientists have been able to verify that these electric fields can not only excite neurons, but they are also capable of generating a wave, like those produced in stadiums, that travels through the brain propagating information.

With this system, neurons can communicate with distant neurons, even when there is a gap on the way, somehow producing wireless jumps.

At the moment, as often happens, this has been proven by conducting studies in mice, so it is not sure that it works the same way in humans but, if so, it surely has amazing medical applications.
