Gold, humanity has mined it, used it and valued it for thousands of years and there is no other mineral on Earth more treasured than it.

As we know humans have been using gold as far back as we can trace history. It shines the color of our star, it's malleable and it's scarce. All of these properties have made it sought after.

Let's go back even further, beyond that of mankind, to it's origins, the stars. Gold and many other elements, including carbon, are created when large stars explode into supernovae. Without getting too much into the details because I am not a scientist I'll just say that in order for heavier elements to be created incredible forces need to be at play. The kind that occur during the explosion of large to massive stars called supernova nucleosynthesis. You can read about it at wikipedia here.

After being created gold floats around the universe until it's time to coalesce around a star in a protoplanetary disk and fall into a newly forming planet. It is also picked up by asteroids which scientists think are responsible for seeding planets with obtainable gold. I say this because the gold originally contained in the protoplanetary disk will sink to the core due to it's weight during planet formation. Gold that is obtainable on Earth was brought here by asteroids after our planet had already formed according to scientific theory.

The Mineral ミネラル

Gold is a mineral and an element. There is a difference between the two. Elements are made up of one type of atoms while minerals are made up of elements and/or other compounds.

Gold is actually a pretty amazing element. It has several rare properties that make it unique amongst minerals. It is resistant to corrosion and It conducts electricity which is why it is used in electronics. It is malleable and fairly soft. 1 gram of gold can be pounded out to 1sq. meter! It's rare! Only 186,700 tons of it have been mind in all of human history.

Gold is found all over the world. In American it is mostly found in the Western states of California, Nevada, Arizona & Colorado and Alaska. Geologists have told me that the Sierra Nevada mountains still contain over 3/4 of the gold in them. That only 1/4 was mined or sluiced out of the rivers.

There is a saying amongst gold prospectors, "Gold wears an iron hat." This is a German phrase that was brought to America with early German gold prospectors. It means where you find a certain type of iron, you will also find gold. For some reason the heavier elements travel together like silver and gold which are commonly found together.

Gold is often deposited in rock through hydrothermal means. Superheated water containing minerals is forced up through cracks in rock and deposited. This is typically why gold is found encased in quartz, which is also hydrothermally deposited.

Gold can also be deposited by rivers and alluvial flows. Alluvial flows are erosion plains usually at the base of mountains. When a mountain erodes it's deposits make a large fan like shape at the bottom. Since gold is heavy & dense it wants to get to the lowest point it can, so it rolls down the mountain. The same is true of rivers. Gold will always take the route downhill with the river. When looking for gold in rivers some of the richest spots will be under large rocks, in holes or mixed in with heavy, black sands made up of iron and other heavy minerals.

There are many ways to find gold, hard rock mining, metal detecting, dry washing and sluicing. A sluice box is a tool used to capture gold in rivers. It works like a river with holes and/or boulders and gates. The gates, riffles, will trap the gold and keep it from spinning up and over the riffles. Lighter rocks will bounce around and be carried over the riffles when water flows over them. Heavier minerals like iron, gold and silver will sit calmly under the riffle as the water rushes over it.

There is a lot more information about gold that I didn't include in this post. One of the best sources outside of the web is your local gold prospectors club. I learned how to identify plants that grow above mineralized areas containing gold, how a river will carry gold around bends and how to find gold in the desert! The old timers at clubs are a wealth of knowledge that is hard to find in books or online. If you are interested, join a local prospecting club!
