🐠 Koi Fish

Koi fish kites are hanging on the top of the market ceiling, all in beautiful vivid colors, fluttering in the wind. What a great feeling!

This kind of fish is called a pollack.
In Korean, there are different names for the way the fish is prepared.
dried pollack - hwang tae
half frozen pollack - myong tae
completely frozen pollack - dong tae

It's kinda complicated 😁

Those kite strings are very cool. Very colorful. The different names for the fish, based on how its prepared, does sounds confusing. I'm sure it makes sense though once you figure it out

Yes you're right. It's all the same fish: pollack. If we break down the names into Chinese characters....

  1. "Hwang" means yellow, so it's the dried one because it's yellow.

  2. "Myoung" means "bright". Maybe it's because they lay the fish out in the sun for half the time, and then they freeze it.

  3. "Dong" means "cold or winter" so it's the complete frozen one.

But it's all the same kind of fish: pollack.
