According to the Christian faith the holy spirit is received by the laying on of hands after baptism:
"When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might received the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit." Acts 8:14-17
The holy spirit is usually associated with the gift of tongues as in Pentecost, the apostle received the holy ghost that day:
"When the day of Pentecost came, they where all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Now there where staying in Jerusalem God fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked; "Aren' t all these who are speaking Galileans?"...Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, What does this mean? Some, however made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine."" Acts 2:1-4
Even if the gift of tongues is one of the most impressive gifts within the early church, the true purpose of the holy spirit is to bestow the love of charity and to strengthen faith through the gift of wisdom and understanding: "God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit", Romans 5:5.
Once received, the holy spirit is present in our lives as a guide, a inner teacher: "But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time, you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you" Matthew 10:19-20
According to the teachings of the kingdom of God, the spirit of wisdom is the source of all ties with God and with Christ in order to achieve the grace of salvation: "But the one who endures to the end will be saved", Mattthew 24:13.
