Why People Think Steemit Is Scammy

in steem •  7 years ago  (edited)

So this was a video I uploaded to YouTube because I was seeing so many comments out there and people were really uninformed about the present situation on Steemit.   My main goal was to tell people to take a another look at it if they haven't been on there in awhile and just gave my general ideas on why people were out there hating on it.   It isn't going to be for everyone and even if they don't like what they see right now it might be something they will be more interested in six months to a year from now when it is further developed. This isn't a circle jerk post because I'm not telling people to join or invest in Steemit. I'm just telling them that they should maybe take another look at it and become better informed about the present situation here. It still might not be ready for a lot of people. That is fine by me to be honest. If Steemit stays as a small close knit community that is fine for me.

Great comments; you are really chill and take us through this, in rational terms. Thanks.

Things take time.
Still, the most successful DAPP I've ever seen. I think that, in itself, is so cool.

Steem Dollars, SP, STEEM, I agree, it's too complex for most folks.
That goes against the very idea of steemit; and most folks are not that bright..

Typical; you get 4 geniuses in a room, and they think everybody else is like them. And expectations... are less than rational.

Exactly. It's easy enough to make an account here, but in order to move the steems and dollars etc around and invest in steemit you need some basic crypto currency skills. Most people are years away from that still. I have "friends" that are talented writers, photographers, artists and musicians. They still havent created an account. I asked one of them why he hadnt done anything with it. And he told me it was just too complicated with the passwords and the steems and steem dollars and basically he didnt have the savvyness to even just start blogging and posting his art. I told him I could help him, but he started refusing. And when I told him (he's a struggling artist working part time in a kindergarden) he could make some serious money here with his art and pictures he got really defensive and started lecturing me about how he's not about money etc, and that he preferred Facebook and twitter etc. I was just like suit yourself. :)

I know what you mean of mentioning it to your friend and him refusing. There are a lot of things to play at that. A lot of people need so many exposures for something to warm up to it . They almost have to be tricked into thinking it is their own idea of joining.

But yeah it could be a no brainer for people to try it out and they still won't do it. People do weird things when it comes down to it.

I don't even tell anybody about it anymore for the most part. Sometimes I say that I'm a paid blogger. They will find that interesting and sometimes they ask what I blog about and I will say but I won't even say what the platform is or anything.

If you get too excited about it and really want it for someone they think that it is Multi Level Marketing or that you are trying to get them to join to make money off of them somehow. It is very odd.

Yup. Stopped talking about it as well. But sometimes I get enthusiastic and forget that most people arent.

Exactly. Thanks for the backup ;-0

The signup is easy wow ..... so you tried. You just need to remind people how often they will experience the censorship on the mainstream programs. Keep you eyes open and I guarantee you will be censored soon enough.

Yeah it makes a ton of sense to us for sure and the ecosystem makes sense. And really this and BitShares are two of the only real world use cases for blockchain applications beyond a coin for speculative investment. (When is a huge use case) Regardless Steemit is really awesome and it has proved a lot to me and I believe it is moving in the right direction so I'm here to stay.

You raise a lot of good points in this video. I have been on steemit for over a month and I'm astounded at how many people are pissed about their earnings or are buying into the bitconnect schemes that have no stability. I didn't have a damn clue about steemits inner workings when i first started. I mean, I had known about steemit since it came out but didn't get on until recently as I said. You are right, in general LOTS of People on here aren't willing to learn. I have completely read through the FAQ 3 or 4 times and skimmed it dozens of times in a month period. I love steemit. My life has completly changed. I've met and connected with tons of amazing people. Have gotten to have actual real convos with people interested in the same things i am. Funny you should mention folks not knowing the difference between steem and SBD. i did a post on that like in my first week or so bevause despite all the digging through the FAQ i still didn't get it. I awarded a person with the best most clarifying answer with 2sbd. Or something. So my advice is if you don't know ask! There really are no dumb questions. I had two very high dollar posts within my first two or so weeks here on steemit. One about the executioners life that i made $390 on and one promting an artist friend of mine made close to $200. At the time I was thinking these are cool topics, i want to talk about them. Maybe someone will take interest. I talked about it because i wanted to. I didn't expect anything more than maybe a couple bucks or less and i would've been happy with that. I was astounded to say the least. Truth is you should not be EXPECTING people to just upvote or follow you. You need to enjoy the ride. If not you're on for the wrong reasons. Those two you mentioned I commend you on risking the "haters". But it only took me about a week on here to see something was just up with that.... That's all...i knew something was a little fishy.
Begging or whining about your earnings then blaming it on the platform is insane. You get out of it what you put in. The please upvote me shit is like seriously getting out of your car at a mall and asking someone for money for no reason other than you just want money. I actually created a fb group Steemit Dreamit aimed at helping steemians gain organic followings. ...the idea being have people folloeing you that want to not just bevause they are part of some voter clique. There's absolutely no upvote for upvote or follow for follow allowed. Small group but its fun and no one has posted anything that wasn't at least worth my upvote and a comment if not a resteem. I'm still learning new stuff about this platform everyday. Sorry this is a very topic hoping and rambly comment. I'm gonna resteem this

Really GOOD points. People expect to much but will opt to get NOTHING while being censored at youtube hahahahh ::))) wow And........ I really love the going up to someone and just asking for money hahahah but it fits it fits :) Nice response..

Hehe thanks. :)

@chelsea88 Thanks for your comment. It is confusing for sure especially for people that don't already have a background in Crypto currencies and it also helps to have previous content creation / photo editing and even video editing abilities.

I'm not saying that Steemit is perfect but it is evolving and I feel it is going in the right direction. There will be inflows and outflows. When the price of STEEM goes up people will pore onto the platform and when it is low a lot of people will leave but with each boom and bust it will pick up more people who stick around and are apart of it on some level. Just like Bitcoin. With every surge and crash more and more people survived to the next boom and the price keeps following a general trend. The new lows never get lower than the previous low in Bitcoin. If we can experience a similar thing with STEEM then over time our power will grow and our blogs will be worth more and more money as time goes on.

Plus on that keep in mind that each year the inflation rate will keep going down by 1% so just like Bitcoin the supply gets restricted as time goes on. Gold is the same way. All the easy stuff has been found. Now it is harder and harder to mine an ounce of gold. Once the supply is restricted and it is harder to get the price tends to go in an upward trend.

Thanks for commenting!

All so true. That's why people need to be patient with their earnings. Rome wasn't built in a day

Yeah and also overtime you can learn different strategies to make money on here. Certain people have gained a certain level of trust in the system and then have powered up more of their earnings or brought in money from the outside.

Because you can look at it this way. Bitcoin, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Dash, Monero....etc are all speculative investments and the main play is to buy low sell high. Well with STEEM you can buy it and speculate on the price going up and also power it up and earn off of it.

I'm not saying Bitcoin, Dash, Monero...etc are bad investments but you could equate them to buying a house and then leaving it empty for 2 years waiting for the market to go up. But with STEEM it is like buying a house that you can rent out and earn money off of each month while the market is going up as well. And you can promote a brand or art and make friends at the same time.

Pretty cool really!

I agree plus it is not so high stakes as, oh Damn I sold my btc the day before it went up $300. Couple weeks ago was $2300 and I sold. the next day was $2600 like really. Lol i still profited but...anyway.
Steemit is a nice steady stream. May not always be consistent earnings but will always be something happening. Working on getting my SP up!

Holy Sh*t, use some new lines? New Paragraphs?
Sorry, I can't read this; it's just too much work..

Well I don't speak in text blurbs. And was responding to @brianphobos not you. Sorry i didn't whip out the Comic Sans font for you. Haven't you ever heard if you can't say anything nice keep your damn mouth shut? In no way would this be considered constructive criticism. I put time into this comment regarding several things he mentioned in the 8 minute video.

ya'll stand back or you might get hurt!

Hey @brianphobos, I like your stuff.. and have upvoted you lots in the past. I want to watch the video.. and will after I write this.. so you're getting my completely innocent reaction "before the video" about this subject.

I wrote something today on my blog about this very thing.. the "new" and "facination" thing wears off on people pretty quick.

Except there is something special going on that many people don't seem to realize. Please take a look at @intelliguy and you'll see what I mean.

I'm not worried at all.. and we don't need to try too hard... you'll see why.

If Steemit stays as a small close knit community that is fine for me.

It won't. It can't. We're past that. The naysayers are wrong.

I took a look at your post and commented. Great post! The only thing I will say about your comment is it depends how big we define as "small" Reddit is a lot smaller than Facebook. We don't have to even get close to Reddit size to get rich! If getting Bitty rich is our goal then we can get there without getting huge!

Its happening. Twitter was created March 2006... before the first iphone was released in 2007.

Steem went public 2016. Give us 10 years... it's gonna grow huge. The only way is UP.

If you think you'll be alive in 10 years (I do)... my wallet balance is going to skyrocket in 10 years too

In my opinion it is hard to compare Twitter because yeah it had a lot of user adoption but it has never been profitable.

I guess you can equate having Steem power to owning shares in Twitter before it went public.

It is a tough thing but I'm bullish on Steem for a lot of reasons! We have a legit shot to get rich here for sure!

Profitable isn't important. Which sounds weird.

On the internet, massive companies, with massive user adoption, profitable or not, get purchased and acquired all the time because they have the user attraction to the platform and the founders get severely rich when it happens.

You can't create "viral" adoption easily.

...but in the past... you could buy it.

Google+ tried to replicate it for cheap.. but it never went anywhere.

Google bought Youtube. That was a viral platform.

Google can't buy steem. But steem will continue to go viral.

So if you invest into steem or sbd.. and no one can buy it or acquire the blockchain and own intellectual right to the platform... then yes, in 10 years from now... with continued user adoption, we all can do well financially as users.

Hope this makes sense.

Yeah I get what you are saying. This past winter was an important test because at one point I thought the economy on here might fail because of how many Steem Dollars had been issued and that essentially the system would become insolvent. It lived through that scenario and continued on which was good.

I think this is an incredible opportunity for us as a collective. I'm still inexperienced and trying to get followers but I'm so excited to see my spiritual community grow and build a foundation for the future generations to make a living using their talent and creativity.

You have to remember that the market doesnt work the way that everyone will make a living using their "talent" and creativity. Most people don't have great talent and therefore they will not make much money on it. But it's a great opportunity for a select few early adopters (that's all of us that are here now basically) and talented and clever people to make money and inspire and achieve. It's like youtube in the beginning. Being early is a clear advantage of course, but it doesnt mean everyone will have success. The market seems to be working perfect on Steemit so far. People are allready struggling hard, and if you have skills and stayer ability you have a decent chance of making it :)

People think Steemit is a scam because it's becoming one big circle jerk where everyone just wants to trade votes and follows for profit...

Yeah but that part of it is just going to happen naturally. People would assume that their friends are going to upvote them and they are going to upvote their friends. It does throw in a different dynamic considering an upvote on here is actually worth real money vs most platforms it doesn't directly correlate with money. On other platforms it is more about steering the heard. All likes and upvotes are gamified. Here is a picture of a Facebook or Instagram "Like Farm". Buying likes is big business.

It's all about the trust.

I agree with your opinion. Thank you for sharing information about this great medium. A lot of science that I can take here. May always succeed for you for me and for everything

Steemit in my opinion can appear scammy when everyone comes herre with no real content to contribut. Just a bunch of folks talking about irrelevant things that are not engaging to get as many upvotes as possible. So in a sense it makes it seem like a hustle more so than just a regular social media platform thats growing.

Yeah I get where you are coming from with that feeling that it is more of a hustle. But in the same regards if you get really active on YouTube that is what it becomes. It is a hustle and if a video you think is going to do great doesn't get as many views as you expect you are really upset. And it is all about running around and collaborating with other YouTubers who have similar type channels. It gets to be a big time grind.

I look at the first picture and like what? you clone yourself? Must be some new camera trick.

Hahah, Well I initially did that picture for my Bitcoin / Bitcoin Cash fork post. As if I'm cloning myself as well but then it was too much work so I'm using that for about 4 different pool meeting posts I'm going to have!
