Is Facebook Having its MySpace Moment?

in steem •  7 years ago  (edited)

The string of bad news hitting Facebook have some questioning; is this FaceBook’s “MySpace” moment? News reports surfaced today that 14 million Facebook users’ settings were made public from May 18 to May 22, while testing a new feature to be released on the platform. Facebook’s reputation has been severely damage due to fake news, spam and clickbait advertisement. Furthermore, Facebook and other traditional centralized social media companies have profited handsomely off of their users meta-data which does not help from a PR stand-point.

The issue of data privacy is a hot topic in 2018 and could be the catalyst for decentralized content publishing platforms like Steem to step in as a replacement technology. The Steem network delivers powerful design features such as on-chain governance built into the protocol. Steem has the potential to up-end social media and the entire content publishing industry.

Twitter and Facebook have been experiencing declines in user growth. In particular, Facebook is losing young people at an alarming rate. According to an article published by Insider Business, Facebook has experienced a -20.7% decline in users between ages 11 - 24 years old. Facebook has lost its appeal to young people and the platform’s reputation is only getting worst. The only saving grace for Facebook is Instagram which has seen exponential growth since its launch, from 1 million users during the first two months on the market to 800 million users by September 2017. In 2012 Instagram was acquired by Facebook an estimated $1 billion.

Only time will tell if Steem will be able to scale to size of an Instagram which has 800,000,000+ users on its platform. Currently Steem has only 1 million accounts registered on the blockchain. Nevertheless the opportunity for Steem to disrupt the current social media landscape is enormous. The technology is impressive. Steem has demonstrated so far that it can scale, with the most transactions of any blockchain including Bitcoin. Steem’s main-net just went live in June 2016.

we're definitely at peak facebook

compare with myspace...

but of course there is the xfactor of facebook's acquisitions

personally i just think things like instagram and whatsapp just buy FB time b4 decentralized social networks annihilate FB and MZ's fortune with it

Awesome charts @marketstack don't you one up me on the chart game HAHA!!!

Steemit now has 1 million users, its amazing. Yeah I think we may see a shift soon.

thanks for the graphs to compare.

Are you pertaining to active users or number of accounts in Steemit? From what I've read, there's only about 100,000+ active users (plus sleeping whales). Others could be spam or bot accounts.

That's far from insta's 800mil users. 799mil more then we're even.

@zeddjacob

Im quoting total accounts, not active. Steemit has over 1 million total users, I know its not Facebook level and other large social media platforms. And thats great growth even with only 60k-170k active users right now.

One year ago we had 10k active users and 100k total users.

I see...

To be honest, I'm rooting for steemit to trend someday, I hope the others have the same vision too.

Before steemit, I used to be a blogger and I daily drive traffics to my blog from social medias especially Facebook but since I joined steemit it became profitable to me to both drive my traffic and blog on same platform.
This is a huge replacement for me. And for the past one month I haven't even posted on Facebook.

The more bloggers leave Facebook, the more decline it will experience.

@jacobit yes- Steemit is a bloggers dream... Although we need cleaner and more flexible interfaces on Steem to really complete with the likes of Medium...But Steem is a plug and play backend that can disrupt and did I mention my favorite part of Steem? ZERO TRANSACTION COST HA!

You are on point @lionindayard

Compared to most of our blog monetization system like Google adsense the fact that I don't have to wait to a $100 withdrawal threshold is one of my favorite part.

I pray steemit gets the attention it truly deserves.

Sadly, if more people come to steemit then the reward pool shrinks then our upvotes become less valuable (in terms of steem). Though buying pressure on steem may skyrocket if hype does it's job, thus compensating for the lost upvote value.

And the reputation system is broken too, it should be based on collective opinion rather than the upvote value as was said here (plus other solutions).

Steemit surely need more work to become mainstream.

Exactly what I fear may happen too.
I'm however optimistic that strategies will be in place soon to counter any negative effects increased population on steemit may cause.

Facebook site exploits users so the percentage of 😀registered
Really very special information😊

@lionindayard Mostly users traffic move to different platforms.
Users want to try some different things to time by time.
I think right know the mostly user choice is Steemit.

@mosij agreed. However I do like busy.org as well. To be honest I am indifferent about the steem interfaces and more excited behind the technology. I mean DPoS is a innovative protocol, on-chain governance centered around the token at the protocol level is fantastic and the SMT tech!!! Steem is an orgy of opportunity!

Facebook should buy Steem. lol

It's a joke, right? Lmaooo

'active users' is the key here. I think we'll see the usage of facebook fall, but people will stick to it because they still use it for friends and family. Any shift will be gradual unless more negative triggers for fb happen.
And this may give fb time to adjust itself in some ways for the crypto-powered world over time (however, they can't exactly alter their very infrastructure!)

Steemit is quite a unique space right now, it's quite a different type of content. If it tries to be more profile-based, it could lose its identity right now as a content creation vehicle. (But that's not stopping other projects that focus on the profile /photo , plugging into the Steem blockchain.)

There's room for both? But with token-based platforms on the rise, FB will have to ride that train, before so many others start taking off. Heard of Mithril yet? Narrative?

Lol oh wow u brought up a dinosaur "myspace" haha. I wish i could remember my info to at least take down my info and save some videos i had on mine lol. I really liked how we could customize our page with music and things .

To be honest. Due to the fact that social media in Steemit offers reward. I've been motivated to delete a majority of the content I currently maintain. My reason is to reduce SEO that was previously created reflecting in bounce to Facebook pages etc. I don't feel it's a necessary presence anymore. I think that there are a few things that can be considered when suspecting that it's ok to keep the media all the same. However, I'm likely going to be making some adjustments since the Cambridge scandal. Who knows how many people were effected and if password information was taken? We don't truly know how some of the agencies we connect with have a back door to our accounts. Facebook was a pioneer and I respect it for that much. However, Mark Zuckerberg failed to show up for the security conference held by Obama. Why not attempt to advance securities and work with the nation where your corporation was founded? That was slightly suspect in my opinion. Around the same time he would show up for a similar style conference held by Israel. Which, is curious. In statements made while under Congress hearing Mark Zuckerberg elaborated to the fact that a deleted account isn't retained for the 18 month period required by FISA under the USA Freedom Act. Who knows how many potential violations exist when considering the number of accounts deleted since the time of the USA Freedom Act's initiation? This is the common flaw in society today. There are so many rules it's nearly impossible to live your life without breaking one. But, I believe the reflection of Facebook's downward spiral may be a direct result of trust issues. I was hacked in 2013 January. The result of the hack became the venture capitalist didn't want to touch me in fear that his subsidiaries would suffer the same fate. This could be a dark moment of realization that the flow of internet traffic may prefer social media that rewards in crypto currency. The growth rate on Steemit would be a nice chart to see in consideration to user accounts. Facebook could suffer a heavy blow in the event the American government calls up about the deleted accounts retention in violation of the USA Freedom Act. I'm not sure of any fines imposed upon those whom violate the retention clause. If a case was to be brought against Facebook it may mean considerable losses for the corporation. In the case of my business being hacked by terrorists my injected website bounced to a Facebook page containing horrible content. It was scary. The page has since been removed. But, there was a point in time when I wondered why Facebook appeared to be the only immediate benefactor of my hard work. At the time, I was marketing my website very heavily. It was a sad day. Facebook did however remove the page and accept my reporting of graphic violent content. The page today has since been removed. However, the hacker is still on the loose. Same hacker to hack the Trump following. Post the attack left in this video of the hackers verified YouTube channel Twitter has found a harder time at opening new accounts. It's likely because crypto social media offers corporations and users much more in benefits. There are still kinks to work out in the situational nuances. It's likely that Mark Zuckerberg isn't the only one in violation of the retention clauses. There are specific cases where the potential of catche is an impossibility provided a little tech savvy is offered. In the video below you begin to see how insecure Twitter has become due to the inability to see justice served to the hacker. It's likely that one day the hacker will have attempted to hack for the last time. Security of internet websites needs to come with sophisticated programing that offers immediate trace and a dedicated team to vet terrorists posts. While this video is from the hacker and source is most obviously found. I'm within the rules of curation. Should this post ever be removed and vetted along with any subdomains existing of the hacker. I would be happy to know that it's only a distant memory. I feel that the hacker subjecting me to announce war declaration on France taking alliance to the PKK terrorist entity will see his day come in the future.

Reference : Hacker hacked my corporation injecting war declaration https://bit.ly/2HHS0gT If you sit and wait you'll see it bounce to Facebook.

I reported and came to find the FBI was hacked. I don't know how many have the ability to hack the website. But, it must be a limited few on earth. Here is evidence taken from the internet achieve in screenshot. I believe there has been some propagation around this hack and don't know if it was all cleared up. I have no idea whom the Ghost Shell Hacker are. But, this hack came after my reporting. The hacker used the name Chris Defaulter Valentine. My name is Chris, my companies are in default, and I was born on Valentines. Perhaps, the hacker wanted to suggest that I had hacked it? At the time my presence was winning me meetings with small large venture capital firms. Than I was hacked...

You can see the war declaration and translate it yourself.

I suppose that more have the victimization of this hacker in common.

When bouncing to Facebook in the link above you'll notice the page has been deleted. There is zero retention of content previously existing to my knowledge. I believe that's how Mark Zuckerberg would declare the deleted account is handled. He may not have known of the USA Freedom Act. I recall eBay being behind on the policy still adhering to the Patriot Act which is replaced by the USA Freedom Act.

That's a large user base to see removed. What's really sad about it is that Facebook was a great form of social media. However, it's being replaced by things like Steemit. People are serious about the protection of their intellectual properties these days. Think about the YouTube verified terrorist PKK hacker profile on YouTube. How many people would rather post a video where content like that doesn't exist? It's a criminal creating criminal content. The justice systems of the world need to respond more quickly. Had the government been able to respond to my attempt to blow the whistle on this hacker... There would be less victims today. The Trump following on Twitter might not be tainted by the insecurity in their communications or devices with the Twitter app installed. The removal of weak apps offering a back door into a device are among real considerations for those whom suffered from abuses that apparently offer no recourse for illegal offenses committed against what I spent my inheritance on! It's sad and true. My reason for thinking to leave Facebook right now is due to Steemit. I want only my Steemit to be found when searching for me personally. I can create links on FB with steemit links. But, the spiderweb configuration to market my Steemit is on I wish to configure to keep reflections from getting to far away from my media. Facebook was great. It's not the best anymore. Dean Heller's daughter is singing; "It ain't safe." And, Dead wants answers. I trust in the system and hope it can adjust to the tech savvy that appear entirely evasive at the moment. Facebook isn't entirely done. But, I've got a plan that makes it needless in my future.

I guess when other sites pays you to publish... :D

With the fall of facebook reputation will certainly provide an advantage for steem to rise, its potential rise steam big enough for the future.

I was about time... ;)
I deleted my fb for the fifth time, 2 months ago... (got too tired of it... no more profiles there..)
Since then #SteemHigh! :)

Just give steemit time......I strongly believe that steem will rule all social media, it has all the attributes needed. Many People are not aware of steem goodness.....just a little publicity.....and we are good to go.....
Thanks @lionindayard for sharing

There are a few key differences. Facebook was a direct attack on myspace but it still doesnt have any direct competition. True youngsters are going to better platforms like snapchat but from what it seems, instagram is getting good. Facebook has a lot of tools under its belt - whatsapp, instagram, facebook for work and then the marketplace which is crap but can be scaled.

Add to that all the grown ups still to get onto fb in developing and underdeveloped countries. I think there is still growth left for fb. The myspace moment is far away.

Thanks @lionindayard for sharing

Very genius, I am in line with you @lionindayard

anecdotally, as someone who's content is followed heavily by a college and younger audience I have seen a HUGE drop in interaction on FB over the last year...and those who comment are clearly older readers. I've noticed a similar amount of drop among other comic books pros, posts and for that matter the number of them that use FB. Same goes for the comedians I know. Happy to be on Steemit, and looking forwards to FB's collapse.

I'm so ready for facebook go away. Building communities for a long time there. Now our updates don't even reach our followers anymore and they constantly are begging to purchase boosts.

But what they do now, giving me an artificial guilt trip on my birthday annoying me to start a charity event. This is too much!

This is true , judging from recent statistics, teens are more engaged which makes Facebook growth depreciate. Scam and obscene contents being posted makes it genuineness a hard to trust

Many people recognize about the potential that Steem has. As a result, I believe that there will be a new number of social networks based on blockchain.

Our community is going high I love your information
