It's actually safer to use these unknown encrypted messaging apps than the famous ones like Whatsapp because the hackers don't bother with the small players, they concentrate on the popular apps.

Session uses a version of Signal Protocol modified for even more decentralized usage. They don't even have central servers. Sessions use onion routing network which should work even better than simply using VPN. Great Hunt! My only concern is how they make money. I didn't see any information about that.
