Types of Reply I am Unlikely to Upvote

in steemit •  8 years ago  (edited)

source

I was inspired by this post to say a few things about the comments I typically receive. A lot of it will just be a re-tread of what's written there, but I'd also like to expand on it in some areas.

Ever since the hard fork there's been an apparent deluge of new users into Steemit who do not speak English, or speak broken English. This is a somewhat understandable reason for replies like "Excellent post yes I love it!!!" and the occasional head scratcher like "Hello beautiful brother you are writing such wonderful post again, I am wish that you should come check out my post and blessings to you if you upvote and follow yes thank you dear friend xxoo"

I don't begrudge that sort of thing, necessarily. I guarantee they speak my language better than I speak theirs. What I have a problem with is 1. Constant begging for follows and upvotes, 2. Advertising their own content in my comments section, and 3. Obvious signs that they did not read the article.

A one sentence reply containing nothing specific to the article for example. Or when all they do is copy and paste a little bit of text from the article and comment briefly on it, almost always text from the first few sentences in the article, which tells me they did that in order to give the impression that they read it.

Why would I upvote "Pls upvote"? Why would I follow someone who says "U follow me I follow u"? It also doesn't help to try and dress it up by writing a paragraph or so of flattery when it still ultimately ends with a plea to upvote and follow. That does not work here.

I chalk it up to cultural differences mostly. I think many of the countries these commenters come from are more frank and straightforward on the internet than is typical in the US or most of Europe. If you check out /r/indianpeoplefacebook or this Indian music video about Facebook etiquette, you'll see what I mean. (Not to single out India. Arabic and Chinese posters also commonly do these things.)

That sort of thing doesn't go over well with Steemians from Western countries. It's considered obnoxious, low effort and insincere. As the other article explains, if you're getting started and desperate for upvotes, the best thing you can do is focus on churning out quality content.

There's also the post promotion section of Steemit chat where you can promote each of your posts once per day, as well as various Steemit focused Facebook groups set up specifically for sharing your posts.

That is a more appropriate place to promote your content than in the comments section of my articles. If you hope to entice me to follow you, the way to do that is by writing long, detailed comments which demonstrate that you fully read the article and have your own interesting thoughts about it. This will always at least get an upvote from me, and odds are good I'll check out your profile to see what your content is like.

Anyways I've been fairly liberal with upvotes so far and I plan to continue because I like to share my success and it costs me nothing to do so. But I'd also like it if I didn't get so many "Waooww best articel!!" type comments, and people trying to make it look like they read more than a few sentences when they didn't. That's just my plea to you though, do what you want.

Those of you who don't do this, none of what's written here applies to you. I have a few really valued commenters who routinely come up with fascinating new angles on what I've written that didn't occur to me. You know who you are, rest assured you're not the topic of this article and I treasure each of you.

My very favourite thing about your type of article is reading the comments that follow. I'm waiting for "nice photo, that looks like a great place".

The funny thing is, that also happened on the article that inspired this one.

Definitely seems to be the common issue here around steemit and what separates the small, decent, large earners here from Steemit. I even know some steemit users who ask me how I end up getting about $10 comments, and I just simply tell them, actually read a post and give thoughtful feedback. Even then, some folks can't even do that properly unfortunately. Some people don't want to take the initiative or time to read someone's post and be respectful enough to give considerate feedback. Some people want to waste your time, and devalue your voting power, etc. Anyway, good insight, I'll see ya around my friends ✊️

I totally hear you man. There are many bots that are going around commenting random shit hoping they'd get paid. They even lie about upvoting you or following you! It pisses me off, especially when I see such comments get paid! Unfortunately, many users who are generous with upvoting comments fall for their trap...

I still want to be generous because it costs me nothing and many of these people live in worse economic conditions. I just also want a better quality post to shitpost ration in the comments section than Youtube.

I hear you but technically speaking, it does cost you! You should check this post out and see how much some people have been "earning" by self-upvoting. Like @ausbitbank was saying in his post, there are some people who are raping the system through self-upvoting. And I'm not sure if the bot-makers live in third-world countries! And even if they do, they have some good programming skills so they can get a good job. Not everyone can make a commenting bot for steemit!

Oh, I didn't know. I don't self-upvote unless I want my comment to go to the top so the author sees it, because I want their take on my idea or something. And of course to boost my posts in the site listings. It looks like that's enough to put me on that list, however.

And I'm not sure if the bot-makers live in third-world countries!

The ones I'm thinking of speak broken English, often have selfies for their avatars which show they are clearly Indian or Arabic, and have names typical of those regions. But of course there are Westerners who do this too. Maybe it's just confirmation bias, and I'm only remembering the ones that were funny to me because of their mangled Engrish.

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

Fair enough but let's not forget that we have many refugees and/or immigrants living in the West who can't speak proper English! :P

And furthermore, you might not recognize the ones with good English, because their bots are obsequious, but more subtly so. Like, "Ha!" on a post in "funny" is probably a good bet. Sometimes I want to write that because my voting power is low, but I have nothing to add to the conversation, and I just want the author to know I liked their joke. It's rough, yo.

Wow, I guess it never occurred to me that self upvoting was even a thing. That would feel too much like patting myself on the back and buying myself a coke for making an argument that I agree with and saying "Awesome job bro! Keep it up!"

Though I can see some instances where using it as a form of 'influence' could be used for a good reason.

Also, your voting power is down below 20%! You can reward people or yourself MUCH MORE if you maintain that power above 80% at least! It takes about 24 hours for it to recharge 20%. Your upvote's value can increase 4-5 times if you let it recharge back to 100%! Just saying...

I like to be generous though. I guess I can give that a shot, but it will mean a brief upvote dry spell for my followers...

I don't think your commenters/followers would mind, man. At least the loyal ones. I'm happy to receive an upvote from you when I leave them, but that's not why I'm leaving them. I just like to interact with people on here and enjoy your works and wanna let you know.

I don't think it would be a big deal to not receive upvotes for a couple of days so you could let your voting power go back up, bro. But, that's just me.

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

You can try upvoting with a smaller percentage in the meantime. Overall, it will be better for everyone because your upvote's value will increase 4-5 times once your power is back above 80%! :]

I have been grateful for your generosity on this platform. It has encouraged me both as a reader and as a writer.

Cheers to better comments.

'' I FOLLOW U ,U FOLLOW ME"

It makes a lot of sense why you would feel this way as you seem to focus more on authoring and receiving thorough feedback. I get a little annoyed as well with the plethora of 'shitty' comments to be curt. I'm not sure exactly their demographic, I haven't really delved to deep into whose writing what, but sometimes it's best to not comment at all. I do, however, feel for some people who are trying to make a name for themselves. I aslo think a lot people might be scared to be harsh on the platform cause they don't want to get down-voted or silenced.

'' I FOLLOW U ,U FOLLOW ME"

People should stop begging for upvotes and write some quality content instead. That's just my opinion

@alexbeyman,
Few contents I wish to copy paste here

"Why would I upvote "Pls upvote"? Why would I follow someone who says "U follow me I follow u"?"
Yeah that's something really weird! I have decided to remove most of following people from my account. Coz, I feel they are not worth enough to be there.

""Waooww best articel!!" type comments"
Your writings, yeah actually I can never do that! Your effort is really high and I can't imagine I can put that much of effort. So I never tried to do writings. But I think without reading what you have write there, commenting for UpVotes should not be done!
It's very easy to say ""Waooww best article", but no one know the effort of yours!

Somehow my voting power is not worth enough, and still new to STEEM so a minnows. But you made a fan and fan will do what he always do! Don't stop, we need more writing from you! And wish one day you will print books from those novels and stories!

Cheers~

Not to worry, even with your short replies it was always clear you weren't just a bot or spammer.

'' I FOLLOW U ,U FOLLOW ME"

I think new people dont understand what steemit tries to be.
they think if they have a lot of followers they will get more upvotes- but in fact, they should look for people with the same interest and concentrate on solid content.

Exactly. It's like focusing on getting return customers for your business. Reliable Steemit income can result from even a single whale provided they dig your content enough to upvote it every time.

'' I FOLLOW U ,U FOLLOW ME"

"Waooww best articel!!"

Haha, no sorry. Had to.. I think its an approach. I have seen people from western countries do it too, maybe not as often though. Some people just feel that's the way to do it. They associate followers with success. When really its quality of followers IE: people with related interests or common goals. Those are the good people to have follow you.

Its a follow or an upvote being organic, as opposed to pushed or forced.

I also commented on the post you referenced. For different reasons though haha! but yes the spammy comments have increased which is unfortunate. Anyway, thanks for the thoughts yo. You are appreciated

You too, my computer duder.

'' I FOLLOW U ,U FOLLOW ME"

I get stupid comments too and it's usually obvious they're from machines/bots. I often reply and tell them to stop spamming people. :/

Yeah, I'm definitely on the same boat with you here, bro. I get especially annoyed with western people who just copy/paste the same 3 replies they've typed up in a specific pattern. I've never understood how they believe doing this is going to net them upvotes and help them get ahead on here.

They at least speak the fucking language well and could spend a few minutes reading through the post they're commenting on and show some respect. Some people really must think this is just a way to get a free lunch basically without putting any effort or work in.

Really tips that are so honest and assertive. I often see comments from small fish to upvote and follow them in curator or pope posts. And I strongly agree with you that steemit chat postpromotion is a suitable place to promote postings. Not in the comment column of the curator or the whale. Thank you very helpful tips for small fish like me not to beg and work hard with the best works. Best regards @alexbeyman

I struggled for my first month too ($0 payouts for that entire time!) but slowly I bit, clawed and crawled my way up out of the minnow pond. I've been at it for a year, to give you an idea of how long it takes to become a dolphin providing your content finds an audience here.

Thanks for motivation @alexbeyman. I will try harder, and since joining steemit I started to like photography and I try to focus more in photography

Follow beggers and upvote beggers make me wanna puke!

"U follow me I follow u"?

Mate your upvotes alone gave me like 2 rep points lately! When I see your posts I always read them, before or after commenting because you deserve it. You share quality content and you are willing to support your followers generously! Thank you so much for it!

I don't understand some of those bots, like they really think people are idiots. But I don't think there are so many of them. Also english is not my first language and when I write my comments or posts and I have any doubts if I spelled something wrong I rush to dictionary to see if I got that right.

Anyway, thank you so much for everything :) Your kindness is really appreciated :)

Also english is not my first language and when I write my comments or posts and I have any doubts if I spelled something wrong I rush to dictionary to see if I got that right.

No worries, like I said I am 100% sure you speak English better than I speak any other language. That's not the issue here, it's just what gives me some ideas about who is behind these shitposts and why they think it's a good idea.

I think most of the comments you're objecting to are from bots man. I can develop bots myself but I don't like spamming people. The best way to get them off your wall is to flag their comment...

When I've done this in the past, they show up to complain, claiming it was a sincere legitimate comment and play the victim. I can't tell if they're being honest or not so I generally let them off the hook rather than risk wrongly punishing somebody.

That's a good point. Not wanting to punish someone wrongly. Because it does get tricky sometimes. I personally don't have much SP as I'm fairly new to the platform and my upvote isn't worth anything yet. But I don't like to flag anyone either...

"U follow me I follow u"?

For sure here are a lot of people who do not speak very well english. I am one of them. Steemit is a place where I can learn more english, that's is one of the reason why I am here. How I told you a few comments ago, in the past I didn't read this kind of stories. I have to admit that your generousity made me to continue to read, what you are writing is different. What I do not know how much understand from what you want to communicate through your stories. I think that is more than 75%.
I agree with you about people who ask for upvote and follow.

Not to worry, the language barrier is not the thing I object to, and I promise you speak English better than I speak any other language.

Being new on steemit I receive significantly less comments than yourself, thinking about it it is actually because my content is worse rather than the age of the account. Nevertheless even I am starting to get these useless sometimes even spammy comments on my articles and I agree it is rather annoying.

From my point of view I spend a reasonable amount of time on my content and you obviously put in a large amount of effort, producing some of the best content on steemit. So when I receive one of those types of comments I take it kind of personally, I probably shouldn't but I consider it an insult that they didn't even bother to read the article.

I would like to chalk it up as cultural differences but I am more inclined to put it down to the fact that there is money on the line and their belief that the more comments they post the more chance there is to make some. They seem to believe in the fallacy of quantity over quality.

I did start to respond to these types of comments with, "D-, not good enough please try harder! See me after class." However I am so fed up with being their primary school teacher that now I don't bother and just gloss over them.

I have come to the realisation that if all of those types of comments are just left to stagnate with no votes, then perhaps they will eventually get the picture and actually put the effort in.

P.S. The Indian Facebook video was amusing and actually pretty catchy. Going to have that tune stuck in my head whilst I'm coding today.

P.P.S. Thank you for being so kind with your voting, you are a true selfless steemian!

"U follow me I follow u"?

I totally agree with you. Especially after putting oneself out in an article, receiving irrelevant comments would undoubtedly disappoint any author (at least it disappoints me :( ) In my opinion they are not from any particular country or because of cultural differences. It is just my opinion and what I have observed and concluded from commenters of my posts that these spam creators are from all over the world.

Oh? What sort of name is Chaithra Bhat, by the way?

  1. Constant begging for follows and upvotes

The problem with this issue is, that as long as this works and people give them a follow/upvote, this will not stop...

I can't really understand how steemit user can fall for this

I made a comment on a similar thread 3 weeks ago that I'd like to share here:

A lot of people using steemit around the world are poor. Dirt poor. According to this article, in 2015 more than 2 billion people lived on less than $2 per day. In 2017 that number probably hasn't shrunk dramatically.
I don't think they would care if they happened to slightly irritate some people on steemit, when $1/day, which is definitely attainable even for a new user, could mean a 50% increase on their income!
I guess what I'm trying to say is that steemit can be a life changer for those people, not just an interesting social media that happens to earn you a few bucks (+blockchain technology,+lack of censorship). Now I have no idea how many of those people actually are on steemit but there surely are some people saying $1 is a lot to them: "By keeping an small money SBD after a month i can still earn for our saving...in that case blogging after a year is a big money for us..cause $1 in our country is 50.65pesos...soo its a big amount for us.." https://steemit.com/steemit/@bien/steemit-will-make-our-dream-come-true#@anomiej/re-bien-steemit-will-make-our-dream-come-true-20170706t111847807z (please note that this user is absolutely NOT a spammer, and probably lives above $2/day)

The most experienced users will realize that spamming isnt the most efficient way to make money on steemit on the long term. Short-term though, it can be effective and it's the default strategy for new users. It's actually a necessary strategy if you don't speak english, or if you speak it badly, since you can generate hundreds of comments that way, and almost none by following steem guidelines.

Taking all these things into perspective, I can understand that, in some cases, there can be a justified incentive to spam, even though it obviously is bad for steem as a whole.

Yeah this is a major factor in why I don't flag them. I don't want to see their shitposts in my comments, but I don't do anything to stop them from trying to make some badly needed money.

U follow me, I fowwow you, sir?

😎😃🤓🤣🤡👺

I get it a lot too. Ignoring it is probably the best. The funny thing there is not much to gain from a upvote from me. The power is spent on those who show interest and do so continuously.

I have resteemed this. That is no joke.

I totally agree with you! I've thought about writing a post talking about the same problem.
Having to read, over and over again, this constant begging for followers and votes, is exhausting.
When I write a post I like to read the sincere opinion of those who read it. Especially when it comes to criticism of my work.
Even in Steemit chat they are very annoying with the constant private messages, begging and begging ...
I think the big reason is the search for easy and quick earnings... The money they can receive is far more important than the community growth or what they can learn from the posts.

I think Steemit has grown mature to some of the users. I bet at the beggining it was set up, having to beg for followers was not in the picture. It started probaly after seeing all these dollar.

Nonetheless, some people wants a shortcut though.

I too was guilty and was embarassed like hell. Since I am new, I hope to connect with people with same interest. I put a genuine comment, and put my a link to my post, sincerely to tell the person that we have the same interest.

To my shame, I was told it is a 'bloggerbaiting' and I should not have done that. It was like a punch to the face, and If we really face to face with each other my face will looks like 'salmon red' I deleted the whole comment. And never even think to do that again.

Well, my intentions was not to promote , rather to share same experience.

Ethic is a big word. Not so sure that newbies like me have an idea of the whole proffesionalism in this platform.

Nobody comes out of the womb already knowing everything. It sucks you had to learn that lesson in such a harsh way, but it sounds like you know what to do going forward.

I think you're right that these kind of begging comments are not in place in this community, although I think it's just a matter of time until these guys will realize it doesn't work and thus will change their tactics. Leaving steem or creating their own quality content.

What I've noticed about these kind of people, mostly from people from the Asia continent, is that they only see quick money.

I hope we can help and guide these people to creating their own content instead of begging on every post, without even taking the time to read a single sentence as you've mentioned.

Besides all the negativity from me, I wanna thank you for this incredible post and hopefully u will appreciate my 1 cent upvote :D

I really hope that more newcomers to the platform fully read this and apply it. And I've been having similar thoughts on this for a while now that it does come down to cultural differences and language barriers, probably for the most part. But I honestly also think that if a large majority of the users making such comments speak English as a second language or barely speak English at all, then odds are that they will not be able to read and duplicate the language in this post. Maybe it's worth contacting some of the main supporters of the various different language topics on the platform about this to get the word out :)

New Followers get 0.001 SBD$ and an upvote for free!!

Just follow @steemvote and...

  • we follow back
  • send you 0.001 SBD to your wallet
  • upvote your newest posting

The worst thing I have now noticed and I only saw by accident is the number of comment vote fishers there are now. If you post your article then check who voted for it a lot of the early commenters don't actually vote, just comment. I thought they were all bots but some have replied to my questioning them on it.

One in particular yesterday became quite defensive and states that he read the post and liked it what was wrong with that? He didn't have to vote as it was not required.

Kinda not getting the whole principle behind steemit lol

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

Hey, when i think about it... you don't really give high comment rewards. So there is no big deal of getting upvote or not. For me it's more like a token of appreciation the same as "Like" in Facebook.
Most of the people who comment in your posts actually like your content a lot and don't give a single potato about being upvoted heh.

But yeah i get what you mean. Oh come on, it's not that bad :d

I think the same way about comments. It's like giving them a like by giving a small vote on them. It's not that bad a problem but I do think it's cheeky.

Makes me furrow my brow slightly ;0)

Yeah, i have the same feeling about that, not the best one.
Anyway, I'm getting ready my belly not to explode with laughter from your next post lol.

Hehe, no pressure there!!! :0D

Follow for follow? Just kidding :)) Those people are really annoying.
I don't know if you received that but there's a kind of comment like "if you follow me I'll surprise you". Those are funny, tbh. :D

Well said @alexbeyman!! Thanks for Sharing with us!!

...You should really read the article dude

Lmao!

Haha the irony!

Hahahahahaha. This is fucking comedic gold, man.

It happened in the comments of the article that inspired this one too

Oh, I just realized I read what you wrote totally fucking wrong with my first reply. Thought you responded to my other longer comment and were telling me this shit happened here which I saw. My bad, lol. Probably a sign that I need to go to sleep since it's almost 4am.

I recommend it. Sleep is my favorite. That's where I become Cragnaar the Gorethirsty, viking warlord of the Baltic Sea.

Hahaha. Yeah, sleep is wonderful. I just wish I could actually get a solid 6-8 hours of it at a time. My sleep schedule is so messed up right now. I should get some melatonin or something.

Yaaa bro that's why I said you well said!! Here is many steemiants who never read full articles they just put own comments this things it's really bad!!

What you believe it @alexbeyman!! Lolz

i much inspired by a webinar of micheal weber &joined steemit

Terrible post, my brother! Please ignore my channel and f*** off!

=D

Waowwww the WORST article ever! :) Just kidding. I totally understand where you are coming from. At the same time a lot of users are new, kinda seems like desperate for upvotes and seem to spam generic comments not bothering to read and actually engage with the content or the author. I tend to just ignore those, because time will teach us all. No need to overreact.

meep

meep back

meep

I can't answer to this comments...what upvotes :))

I feel the same way and look I know it's tempting especially being a small fry in a pool so deep. I think I may even done it on my first or second post but that's just cause I was new and saw everyone else doing it. I quickly learnt.

But I'll tell you what I also learnt! That mute works a treat.

Oh... now i know what you were talking about lmao.

What are those things?? What are they? You know the ones I mean. God, fuck... Is that what they offer?

that Nice work comment should be here in the comment section search it LOL hahah

I also don't upvote those type of comments. :D

Well, I feel is that without hard-work we should not expect good results. In steemit I also didn't get success through my previous posts for which I did much hardwork. But I remained consistent and now I am getting fruits of my consistent hardwork.

But people are so lazy that they even bother read the article and write a good thoughtful comment.

What I do is that, I try to read most of the articles completely which are under 1500 words and well formatted. And those which are much larger, I simply scan them (If the writer is smart enough in formatting the long post in the correct way).

I also don't like beggars. If our content and ideas are good, then we'll definitely get upvotes without politics, as there are many good curators and writers like you, who at least upvote the comments of the users.

Well, commenting is also an art and comes with practice.

And I would like to say I am also from India and my English is not so good, but still I try my best. :p
But yeah, I accept, most of the Indian users are lazy and spammers.

However, @alexbeyman your post will definitely show them the right path and correct way of posting anything. :D

Waooww best articel!!

=)))

this is the type of comment bots normally leave =))
and there are SO many bots these days, commenting whatever they are learnt to comment by some certain triggers =)

I only recently joined steemit, and that was the first thing that jumped out at me about the site. It was definitely a hard shift from some of the other sites I used to post at prior to moving over here. The biggest positive thing that stands out for me about steemit though, is how great the community over here is. Even with the inclusion of the obvious spammers and grabbers, there is very little toxicity here compared to other sites. I love it.

"Waooww best articel!!"
hehe, j/k

I'm only just getting started reading through your stories, but I'm enjoying them for sure. You've got a great style and an interesting perspective on some of the realities I think we all ponder from time to time.

please vote me

:D
Another desperate user or a bot comment!

thank you for support

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

I bet you there are people who are Ninjas at this and skim read the articles. There's too much incentive for it. For instance, I wrote an article "*An Argument for Bitcoin as a Ponzi" THEY HATED IT tons of flagging, that's how I knew it was genuine.

Yes eveyone is getting those comments daily, I am just wondering if these are bots or they might just copy-paste the same tect over and over. I made a post an hour ago to test how many people are accually reading my post. Most of them failed... :(

I also find those obnoxious, and mostly because I have no idea if any of them are sincere. The first time I got, "Wow, really funny!" I was like, yeah. I mean, I tried hard to be funny, and expected to succeed, and I'm glad someone appreciates my sense of humor.

But then it kept happening only on posts that I had tagged "funny" even though I sometimes post funny posts without that tag. And I also had someone tell me "you made a great photo" when I tagged something "photography" because I was sharing a friend's photo, and talking about photography, but the post was clear that the photo was not MY work.

So then I was like, "ugh".

On the other hand, I'm a fast reader, and was once accused of posting before I could have even read the whole post. That was untrue. And the comment I had written was relevant... and my accuser eventually accepted my explanation, so it's all just guesswork, ultimately.

My point is... Wow, best article, you should join my contest, link here. https://steemit.com/contest/@improv/contest-deadline-extended-50-sbd-in-prizes

I read you fairly often and love your take on the swallow for swallow and pay for pay crap that happens. I try to remember their are culture difference but I get frustrated some days with it myself.

Waooww best articel!!!U follow me I follow u!!Pls upvote ;)...

But yea it also triggers me when people just copy images of the net and try make money of em.. like no fuck of and create something original
