A Minnow's Progress, My Steemit Journey So Far.

What I have learned In My 1 Month and 7 Days on Steemit.

My experience on Steemit could have been so different if I only listened.. As you can see on my profile I joined Steemit on July 7, 2016, which is almost a year and a half ago. The problem is I joined but never started posting, I only started posting on 20 December 2017.

I was introduced to Steemit by @dragonslayer101, I didn't know him very well or long at the time, we only played a few League of Legends games together. The thing that stopped me from posting then was the same as with all the people I tell about Steemit now, it sounded to good to be true. The thought that you can make money just by posting, it wasn't for me. I have never been one for social media, I joined Facebook and Instagram but rarely posted, I was always the lurker reading and not even commenting.

After creating my account and just leaving it, I spoke to @dragonslayer101 again on 20 December 2017 and he asked if we were still considering Steemit. He explained just how well he has been doing on it and told me to reconsider joining again. After talking for him a bit I decided to give it a go again, it was our builder's break and I had nothing better to do for about a month. It started out slow, I did my #introduceyourself post which failed horribly (I had no idea what I was doing). My first few posts after that didn't do to bad until I joined a discord server and had my one post submitted to OCD. That is where it all changed.

Why You Need To Find A Mentor/s support group.

If you really want to get somewhere on Steemit you have to post as often as possible and as decent quality content as possible, that is what Steemit is all about. I really started getting some traction and gaining followers when I joined a Discord group where I could work with mentors. Mentors will teach you the tricks of the trade and can give you advice when you need it, it can be difficult finding the right support group. The ideal will be to find a mentor or group with someone that can submit posts to OCD and Curie, that is were the Wales reside. I had posts with 20+ likes where the majority of the payout came from one vote, what you need in Steemit is quality upvotes, not more upvotes.

Branding And Building Your Own Empire

It is quite difficult to convince someone to join Steemit, who would have thought showing someone a way to make money would be hard. But if you do it right and assemble the right team then you can grow and learn together, most people will not forget their roots. Even if they surpass you then they will in most cases still read and upvote your posts. Out of the people that I have either directly or indirectly influenced to join Steemit three of them have been Curied and got higher paying posts than me.

Here is a quick shout out to all the people that I dragged to Steemit with me:

  1. @xramonahx (Curie,OCD)
  2. @lordnigel93 (Curie,OCD)
  3. @amneroc
  4. @driekus (Curie)
  5. @damwal
  6. @carlao
  7. @mawshul
  8. @shadowing
  9. @mysticpearl09
  10. @teachertrudi
  11. @dolflo

Some of them are not as active as the rest, each are still trying to find their feet and niche.

Lastly on branding, make yourself visible, be everywhere but not in an irritating way. This can be done by being active in the communities that you are in, be it the Discord servers, responding to the comments on your posts or commenting on someone else's post. A lot of the times you will find that if you were to leave a nice comment the person will upvote your comment and you can get some decent payouts from that. I have had days where my comment upvotes payed out more than my posts.

I'm working my way through the waters.

Steemit will grow, as will I.

When I have more time I fully intend on getting into some kind of mentor deals, right now I make do with what I can timewise.

Hey, good job! I'm only here 3 days but I think I have an addiction...

Hey @chr7is thank you for the shout out, yeah still trying to find my feet, but your mentoring and advice is alway great en uplifting.

Well speaking of Discord:) We met last night on there!! LIke you, I just joined a month ago too (well, without the 1 1/2 lapse hehe), but I also realised the importance of mentors, of which I had plenty, and also putting myself out there in terms of chatting on Discord. I also wasn't big into social media; I had a facebook page but was a bit of lurker too (I love that btw, sounds way better than creeper or stalker haha), but it didn't take long to realise that this platform is so much better, kinder, inclusive and a million other adjectives!

There's also an initiative here that I'm a part of called #newbieresteemday, started by @davemccoy and @mudcat36. It's all about helping other newbies, who like you and I, I'm sure, sometimes feel totally lost or overwhelmed. I'll give you links in Discord if you're interested. I just feel like so many people helped me that I want to pay it forward a bit. I just did a blog about it today actually:)

So thank you for this post; I think so many of us have had very similar experiences here, but it's nice to actually read/hear about it!

Cheers!

Great post! Steemit is an amazing community and I love how there is so much help. It truly is the greatest platform to connect with one another I believe there is and your post is added support of it. Thank you for your post!

Great post, I am in search of a mentor as well, doing stuff and figuring it all out by yourself is so hard. I've had my fair share of regret whet it comes to steemit just like you. You will be a good mentor to your minnows once you reach that status, and seeing how well your posts are received, its just a matter of time till that happens. More power @chr7is!

Some very good ideas here my friend! Maybe a future witness? Blessings and upvoted!

I'm glad I came across this post of yours, for you mention @dragonslayer101 and what you say confirms what I have experienced of him. A person with a good heart who goes out of his way to help. Unfortunately I could not benefit to any great extent from his assistance, for I am too concentrated on posting my story and all I have left is a bit of time for searching out newbies who seem to have a bit of talent but are going about it in the wrong way. Sometimes it is enough to show you appreciate and admire their talent and it gets them going. One of them is bound to pass me in rep soon and I am pleased, for she is talented and deserves it.

I suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome, so I've had to cut back a little, but I love roaming through the steemit jungle, discovering tiny enclaves of beauty, so I am happy. There are nasty people who get pleasure out of flagging others, but in the main, I have found that most steemians are nice people and willing to help each other, as per your above article.

Talent is a gift that belongs to all of mankind, of present and future generations. Whatever you do to help them grow and thrive, is also a gift to all of mankind.

I hope I manage to stay active here for a long time.

Nice post @chr7is. I am a fellow South African and I am trying to follow more South Africans. Good luck with your steemit journey!
