How to tag Steemit articlessteemCreated with Sketch.

in steemit •  8 years ago  (edited)

A lot of new users are joining Steemit and that is great! Recently, however, I noticed one of these users making the same mistake I made when I first joined. I wanted to make a quick post to help new Steemians have a successful launch on the platform!

What was my big mistake?

Tagging

When I first joined the platform I wondered why I was not getting any views or upvotes. It took me awhile to realize it was because I was tagging posts incorrectly. I would use one or two tags I made up that I thought were relevant. This is not the best way to tag posts. Hopefully this post helps new Steemians avoid my mistakes.

Here are the tagging guidelines from the Steemit quick start guide...

Tags

Tags will help people find your posts.

Each post can have up to five tags, separated by spaces.

The first tag in the list will be the main category that the post is in.

The tags should all be relevant to the content in the post.

You can browse content by tags, as well as see a list of popular tags that other users have used in their posts here

Example: The Wrong Way

https://steemit.com/introduction/@swenger/introducing

Check out this introduction post from @swenger

He tags his post with one tag "introduction" and his post only got 8 views

So how could he have tagged this post better?

First of all he should have used the #introduceyourself

Introduce yourself is number 5 on the Steemit "To Do List" and is recommended tag for new user introductions.

Steemit is still growing and because of this it is best to use already established tags where people are likely to look mixed in with your own.

He would also have been better off if he used the maximum number of tags to connect with users of similar interests.

Swing by and give @swenger an upvote :)

Example: The Right Way

Check out this post from @planetmindbody

Let's see how he uses tags...

First off, he uses the maximum number of tags (5).

Second, he uses the correct #introduceyourself tag and places it first, making it the main category for the post.

Third, he uses a mix of well established tags like #introduceyourself and Bitcoin.

Lastly, all of his tags are relevant to his post and will help him connect with users who share his interests.

Conclusion

Remember, when tagging posts to use the following guidelines for the best result...

Tagging has a big impact on the success of your posts so take the time to do it right

Use the maximum number of tags

Use a mixture of well established tags and your own

Make sure all of your tags are relevant to your post

The first tag will be the main category of your post

I hope this will help you make the most of your posts!

Swing by and give @swenger and @planetmindbody an upvote

Thank you so much for this. I'm a newbie and trying to get my head around Steemit. This has really helped me get started.

Excelente información, estare traduciendo este post para mis compañeros de hablahispana si no hay problema :D

Thanks for the info! I googled this to find out how to add the tags. In the box where we type the tags, do we write introduceyourself or #introduceyourself?

introduceyourself

What does "The first tag will be the main category of your post" actually mean? I'm digging through posts on tags trying to figure out how they actually work and I've seen that line repeated in several places, but like, "main category" doesn't mean anything to me absent some more context. Does that change where and how the post is displayed?

And why can I follow the tag-link at the bottom of someone's post and find an empty tag-category listing? Nothing trending OR new? Shouldn't the post I was just at appear in the category since it used that tag?

Thanks for your time!

I dont know the mechanics of it but I think it affects ranking. As far as empty tags, that is pretty common at the moment while the network grows and builds out communities some tags are very underpopulated

Regarding the empty tag, I was specifically talking about a tag that I followed from a post. So it appeared at the bottom of the post, I clicked on it, it took me to the trending page for that tag, and there was nothing there. The post that I followed to that page should have been there, no?

I mean, I'm not sure. Those are all implementation issues in the UI code and different people have different principals and priorities. But it seems weird.

I think it depends on when the original post was made.

Right on point.
Tags are very much important!

Thanks for the help through your post ... it's old but still helpful :-)

I am still unclear on how to write the tags.. their faq says not to use spaces between words.. so how do we seperate words then? Can you write an example in plain text of how five words look written in that tag box area should be written before submitting a post?

Thanks for the advice. My main takeaway from this is "Use a mixture of established tags and your own". I'll be re-steeming this, thanks!

Make sure they are relevant to your post, so you reach people with similar interests. Thank you for the re-steem! :)

thanks you a star

lol thanks!

Made the same mistake for my first post. :I
By mistake I put '-' (dash) in-front of first main tag. Is there any way to edit first tag? I can always delete the post and re-post it but is it possible to edit the main tag directly?

You are truly a shining example of what Steemit represents. A veteran Steemian taking time to help newbies learn the ropes. Thanks again!

Thank you, just trying to do my part!

Nice and straight to the point. That said, I wasn't clear about the use of the hashtag (#) symbol, but I think I've got it now. (If not, I think I have 6 or 7 days to make edits, so hopefully, that counts for the tags, too.)

Tags in STEEMit

Thanks for the good info.

Thanks for the info as well. I'd like to ask a question; are there certain topics that are more cared about on here than others? I tend to post whatever's on my mind during some of my blog entries, and others look like streams of consciousness. I assume that both are good assets to the community, but then again, there are those in the generation behind mine who don't care as much about every-day life. So any recommendations on topics that I should discuss and those that I should avoid? Or are all topics valid in light of the fact that this is a growing community? Advice is much appreciated! Thanks again for the hand; I've been struggling with this for a bit; should go back and edit my tags for my first post.

This is very valuable information, and I wish I knew it before posting on Steemit, although, in my self-introduction post, a kind fellow Steemian recommended to me that I should use more than one tags.
Thanks a lot!

Thank you very much..
Can i get a group of tags and for different purposes

Thanks for this, but my issue is the tag list is 10 MILES long LOL

It takes me so much time to try & go down the list & even then I can't find ones that I want, like selfgrowth which should really be 2 words. : )

What do you do when a tag should be 2 words?

Thanks a ton for your time.

great advise, wish I'd have seen this before my first post!

This is really the good information that u have given us.

Thanks for the advice!
