Facebook, Google, Twitter Banning Crypto Ads - What You Resist, Persists

in steemit •  7 years ago

If you don't know from where the last part of the title comes, let me break it down to you. According to this article from Psychology Today:

Long ago, the depth psychologist Carl Jung contended that “what you resist not only persists, but will grow in size.” And today this viewpoint is generally abbreviated to “What you resist persists,” with many kindred paradoxical variants—such as, “You always get what you resist.”

The Ubiquitous Crypto Ban

The latest to join the "crypto banning party" seems to be Twitter, after Facebook and Google announced a few weeks ago they will stop showing crypto related ads on their platform. Apparently, the announcement sent the Bitcoin price below $8,000.

To be honest, I think we're witnessing a strange PR snafu from all the social media giants above. They all mentioned they will ban crypto-related ads, but what they really wanted to ban was crypto related ads to scams. To be honest, the amount of scams running around on these platforms (especially Twitter, with all those gross impersonations of Vitalik Buterin asking for ETH, and so on) was huge. But that doesn't mean every cryptocurrency out there is a scam.

Stopping - or better filtering - the ads promoting scams is obviously one of their jobs, as social media platforms, and they'd better do it right, otherwise people will leave.

But what they announced was instead a ban to a specific class of content.

Just because some crooks are piggy-backing the trend, and ask money from naive crypto enthusiasts, it doesn't mean crypto is bad per se.

Following this line of reasoning, it would mean that they must ban all ads related to money, just because some people are running pyramid schemes somewhere.

My personal take is that this so called "crypto ban" will backfire big time. Instead of lowering the interest in crypto, it generate a huge alternative communication network on this topic, one that will eventually erode the credibility of the current "social media giants". I mean, Facebook is taking a big hit with the Cambridge Analytica scandal as we speak. Less and less people are sticking to the "traditional" social media networks and are looking for alternatives. Banning crypto ads will not weaken these new, emerging structures, on the contrary.

I already heard about one of these networks, where not only you can post uncensored content, but you can also get paid for it.

Hear, hear...

Indeed the lack of censorship is what makes Steem a better alternative than the corrupt system FB and co. are trying to promote. There are guys attacking crypto from every direction. I have written last week about an article on Forbes that stated that all the cryptocurrencies needed to be banned because of illicit mining?!? What kind of reason is this?

PS: I am not trying to promote my posts here, as the payout is already made, but I am trying to share my feelings about this unfair world where we live in.

The blockchain is so vital for our history right now. People have the right to be forgotten but this alters our past. If something occurred or happend then it has to be recorded in a way which can't be deleted. Otherwise it was like it never happened. Long lives the Blockchain!

Sounds like a fairly typical knee-jerk reaction: "Let's BAN what we don't understand rather than LEARN about it so we can weed out the bad parts."

Sadly, it will be fodder for skeptics and critics: "SEE! Told you so, cryptocurrencies are a SCAM!"

I find the inability of people (and organizations) to engage in independent critical thought most distressing...

Well said!

The all just afraid for that
i'm sure this will be change in the next future while they will understand this is the new world economy

What network....???
Are you serious...who pays for posting ???and no censorship, I don't believe it...

Long live steemit!!!huraah

Unlike most of your commenters here, I think this is probably a net good thing. I don't believe the interest in crypto will die or even wane. I those people that are interested will find someplace where they can get the information that they want.

Crypto and the culture associated with it will persist and grow. The message and possibilities are just too enormous for it to not.

You skould add this to your article..

I already heard about one of these networks, STEEMIT where not only you can post uncensored content, but you can also get paid for it.

Hear, hear...

I agree with your assessment.

Prohibition of any kind tends to foster growth in what's banned rather than eliminate it. I think we have ample examples of that in history to back up your conclusion.

Banning of alcohol in the U.S. (how that ever got written up as an amendment, I will never know) only created bootleggers and made things more dangerous than it was to begin with. There's been an ongoing war on drugs that is as violent now as it has ever been (with billions if not trillions of dollars spent), and the banning of books and other things has been a part of dictators taking over countries, leading to war.

I'm not saying that necessarily happens with crypto—we can only hope that history won't repeat itself with another ban—mainly because many of the circumstances are different. We shall see when this all runs its course.

In the end they can ban ads but that means they will loose business and create a precedent. The idea seems short sighted especially now that people have enough evidence to see that there is no morality or ethics in any of these entities so they are clearly not doing to somehow keep people safe.

The crypto world can be hindered but can't be stopped

Yet the same ad for Bunny Coin keeps coming up on YouTube videos. Clicked on "Stop Showing This Ad," but it persists. I guess the ban hasn't been implemented yet across all Google products.

It's going to be hard for them to ban every ad related to every company involved in crypto, considering companies like Overstock.com and other big companies are getting involved. They'll be missing out on huge ad revenue.

If they really want to keep people uninformed, they're also going to have to doctor organic search results so that Steem posts don't show up.

I was talking to our crypto group about the difficulties that we get from being able to freely discuss and let people know of good deals, ICOs and even just articles that can be added to their knowledge base because Facebook, Google and twitter is banning all links.

Facebook did it to a small measure with Steemit links not recognized in the messenger or facebook group page and often having a message that it is unrecognized or worst blocked.

They have just become another mouthpiece of the bankster who are trying to stop Cryptocurrency and the blockchain technology to be mass adopted.

They cannot stop tech like they tried to stop the advent of telephone, television and the internet.

It will find its way.

This is why decentralized platforms like Steem needs to make itself as the place to be able to freely share knowledge. Hope that Steem Inc. marketing team if it exists uses this.

Obviously, it was bound to happen. Bitches are not gonna let crypto take their market share. Fakebook, and now even Google, this is some messed up shit.
Nevertheless they can't stop the flow, crypto is the future.

Right on! I’m into it. I’ve long used this phrase and know it to be true. Lol! Thanks Facebook for the added energy in the crypto realm!!

i agree - on a lot of levels i think it boils down to censorship and fundamentally will have little impact on crypto space in general besides a little FUD which we already saw a dent in prices. lets hope for a turnaround soon!

I already heard about one of these networks, where not only you can post uncensored content, but you can also get paid for it.

Therein lies my curiousity. I will give you my witness vote if you give hint to the statement above. Lol, as if my minnow vote matters.

You have my vote already @dragosroua.

i don't understand why they are doing it? whenever you block marketers you just make them to be more creative they will find their ways to do it anyway

I dont know why but cryptos will be a revolution. First facebook, google and twitte now

Imagine if there was some type of decentralized social network that people could flock to and sign up.

Wouldnt it be wonderful not to have to answer to corporate behemoths like? What would it be like to be able to post whatever one wanted without fear of having his/her account closed down?

What a world that would be.

"My personal take is that this so called "crypto ban" will backfire big time. Instead of lowering the interest in crypto, it generate a huge alternative communication network on this topic..."

I don't think the intent is to silence people trying to talk about crypto. I think the point of the ban is to remove any liability related to advertising scams.

If they wanted that, they would have targeted "scams", not crypto.

I said they were cautious, not smart.

This is an worst part for crypto. We should not resist that.

ohh !! Its the bad news for crypto holders... specially me...Because of their banned , The crypto market might be freefall... This effect seen today... All other crypto are growing down... BTC is now below 8,000 ...

They growing jealous I guess.. All are counterfeiting systems..

This world of crypto its going Crazy but it will get better.

Maybe steemit will start having ads soon
they can make a lot of money here

even they banned it not that much of an impact specially a giant like facebook they can't even control their own data

I think they all made such a great move! For instance, I have a FB personal account which I haven't used in years (well, I kinda felt what FB was all about). The account was just lingering there among their 2 billion+ accounts. So, I decided to spare them of the maintenance costs for this account. It will be closed tomorrow as I announced today on the respective account.

They don't want us to rise and we dont need them to rise... Doing it by our own will make us the strongest...

They only made people become creative.

The Crypto world can not be stopped.
