Why I (Almost Always) Upvote Comments Of My Posts

in steemit •  7 years ago

The other day I got a strange notification: my account was listed in some curators top, on a respectable 60th position, out of 100. I didn't even think at myself as a curator until I saw that, but then I realized why I got there: because I do have a significant number of upvotes each and every day. I upvote almost all the comments on my posts.

Granted, I would love to spend more time reading other people posts, but I barely make it through my tiny feed of 223 people. If, at some point, I could become a full time Steemian, then probably 20-30% of my time here will be just reading other people stuff.

But until then, I upvote the comments of my posts.

Why I do this?

Well, there are many reasons for that, but I will list just 3 for now.

1. Distributing wealth just because you contribute

That's probably the main reason. As I accumulate Steem Power, I decide to use it directly, and distribute a few cents to commenters. Those people took the time to read the post, to articulate a few sentence, or, who knows, to even point some flaws in my own thinking or writing.

And distributing wealth by rewarding other people contribution is a cornerstone of this platform.

2. Encouraging participation

I tend do this even when there isn't much contribution, but at least I know the person commenting, there is a history of real interaction between us and I want to create a healthy relationship.

So sometimes I upvote just as a sign of "I see you".

3. Encouraging free thinking

Sometimes I don't agree with what the other person says, but I still upvote the comment. This might seem strange, but there's a small subtlety here: I don't upvote only because the other one agrees with me, but also to encourage healthy debate and discussion.

When I don't upvote

  • if you copy / paste other people comments and paste them under your name
  • if you have poor grammar
  • if you're aggressive or overwhelmingly troll (I can tolerate a certain level of healthy trolling, but not too much)
  • if you're literally asking me to upvote, or to follow you - this game is not played like this
  • if you spam with your own blog links, without contributing first
  • obviously, if you're promoting scams or other shady operations

Why I don't flag

There is this metaphor about two wolves living inside us: a good wolf and a bad wolf.

The good wolf is representing courage, honesty, creativity.

The bad wold is representing violence, lies, manipulation.

And the bottom line is that the winning wolf will always be the one you feed.

So, while I do see and acknowledge the presence of malicious behavior (not only on my posts, but on the entire platform), I just choose to reward good behavior, knowing that this is the only way for it to prevail.

It is my deep conviction that even the violent action of flagging is still a form of nourishment, one that will keep supporting that "wolf". So I just ignore the bad wolf and support the good one.

Which kind of wolf are you, by the way?

I know the feeling. That's why I created steem.supply, an easy to use and accurate tool for calculating your Steemit rewards

It's free to use, but if you think this is a useful addition, I'd appreciate your witness vote.

Thank you!

I wish more of the whales would adopt this stance. I noticed that some of the top Steemit authors don't even bother responding to or reading the comments on their posts, which is a shame.

I'm technically a dolphin, but I like how one can imply from your comment that I'm a whale, lol :)

Well, you're rep 73 and your vote is $1.23, that's a TON for our standards. Lol. For example, I've been on Steemit since January and have been the most successful out of my group of 15 friends who joined together and I'm barely hitting $0.02 votes.

Well, still a dolphin, but thanks :)

Thanks!
Many do the same or almost the same. You stated perfectly well WHY we do this.

Great post! lol

I think it's bad how some people don't upvote any comments on their blog.

That causes those people's supporters to have less SP than they would otherwise have. That, in turn, causes those people to be less powerful than they would otherwise be. Also, those people tend to lose supporters to people who upvote their commentators. Enrich your supporters and you shall enrich yourself. It is very simple and mechanical.

Without a doubt this proves your generosity...Sharing wealth will bring more wealth and happiness...

I like your analogy of good wolf, bad wolf. Flagging is a form of violence and some folks do thrive on violence and negative feed back.

I like to think I'm a good wolf @dragosroua and like you, I upvote most comments.

I also upvote posts even though my votes aren't worth much. Mainly because I like to do unto others as I'd like to be done unto myself and even small votes add something.

I'm very grateful for all the upvotes you give me, and for those from @raluca, and for the time you take to explain stuff I don't understand. Thank you very much for that! 😍

It's not about good vs. evil but smart vs. stupid. Not upvoting comments in your comment section is simply stupid if you're after rewards at all. The rewards your upvotes direct somebody else's way do not even come from you but the common reward pool. The only cost to you is a small temporary loss of your voting power. Upvoting someone will often trigger a desire to upvote you in them.

I have to say, I do appreciate the upvotes when I comment. However, I comment because I feel I have something to contribute. A lot of your posts make it easy to do that, like this one. Everyone has an opinion about what to upvote and how much.

On top of that, I could have written this post. It's not every day when I find myself lining up completely with someone else's ideas about anything, let alone upvoting comments.

From day one, I've felt that if anyone engaged with me on my post or someone else's, it was worth some kind of upvote. The better the comment, the better the upvote, within the abilities of my SP. So, I couldn't agree with you more on that point.

I have only flagged once, and that was on a phishing scam. The bulk of my time, I feel, is best spent upvoting what I feel to be good content. I understand we need curators, and so, I'm doing what I can to curate posts and comments.

This place does need more engagement, so if I get it, I'm going to upvote it, as long as it's a genuine attempt at engagement, even if I don't agree with what's said. I've had great conversations that way and I'm happy to say, that as far as I'm concerned, they ended amicably and I can still engage with said commenters to this day.

Seems like sound logic all the way around- how have you been? Awesome app, of course you already have my vote- also I promote you at the bottom of my posts, did I ever tell you that? ;)

Thanks for that, I get notifications every time you post, really appreciate it :)

I'm not a big enough fish to afford upvote all of my comments, but I do upvote comments that I like. Sure, I could reduce the percentage of my upvote, but I prefer to get 100% of my upvote when I upvote.

I have a very similar policy, but I will give a small flag to real spam comments to discourage such activity. I consider it curation for the good of the steemit platform and definitely not any form of violence

I'm a third type of wolf. The wolf of Wallstreet 😋

No I'm just kidding. But I wonder if you put this under a good/bad joke? Or see it as trolling?

So now and then I read your blogs. But most of the time I don't upvote and/or comment. I think that's also a great thing from Steemit. I can just be here without being noticed all the time.

Now I know this, as of now I will always write a comment to earn your upvote 😋
No I won't it's another one of my bad jokes. But I seriously think some people use such a comment strategy. Do you feel that as an issue? People that keep commenting just to get a few cents from you?

Do you feel that as an issue? People that keep commenting just to get a few cents from you?

Not really. Coming here, staying for a few seconds, writing some stuff, this is interaction. It's worth a few cents, isn't it?

Most of the time it is indeed.
I was thinking if someone uses a strategy to comment a full day (8 hours) to earn an income then this is quite alright. Since they put a lot of effort in it.

Only if they start writing tactical comments based on the title, without reading then I still think it's really quickly earned money.

Anyways if you live in Africa, have free internet (for a fixed amount per month) you can easily earn a decent income with commenting. Quite a miracle that not half Africa is doing so.

When i started in the platform i commented more than i posted because one i still didn't have enough followers yet and 2nd almost 45% of what is earned back then was from upVotes I get from commenting from whales down to Redfishes like me.

It became a natural habit to me not because I was looking for votes but because I am an avid reader and by commenting I add further to teh discussion about the posts as well as to make sure that the author knows someone read his/her work and took time to comment.

I didnt have a lot of SP and yet I wanted to reward people who interact with me. Know with a slider due to delegations I am able to upVote comments although it is a measly 0.01 cent because I am just a red fish.

It is true when you comment back and give an upvote you are rewarding the person who took his/her time to reads yours. The from follower they can be an engagers.

Now regarding trollls as much as I want to downvote I save my VP for upVotes.

Same as you. I would rather be encouraging and spreading my upvotes rather than flagging but that's just mine.

I consider steemit to be a social media.
I first encountered social media on facebook...and 'likes'.
I use 'upvotes' much the same way I used 'likes'...as part of the conversation...
kinda like saying...'i agree with you'...
when I don't agree...I don't upvote..
kinda sorta...there are always exceptions..

"So sometimes I upvote just as a sign of "I see you"."

I can say from experienced that it is much appreciated to be upvoted by a witness. I agree with everything you are saying. I also reward every thoughtful comment on my posts with an upvote. I try to be a good wolf and to feed as many as I can.

I even take it a step further and often to to "introduceyourself" and try to follow and upvote baby good wolves who are new to the site.

I think you do appreciate your blog reader and respondents and I hope you'll always do it

Providing others whatever you could is a sign of benevolence.

It isn't necessary that you need to be a wolf, by your actions, I believe you are an ape, taking care of your steemit family.

Wolves, good or bad, eat others for their hunger, whereas apes take care of their family.

Am happy you wrote this, have wanted to ask. Its always nice coming here reading your post making comments and getting upvotes. Its shows how much commitments you give to us. You're an encouragment @dragosroua. Thanks alot

I've been avoiding use of flagging as well, though I hadn't articulated it this clearly. I don't agree with you on everything, and am happy that flagging exists, but I would rather tell someone to go piss up a stump, than to make an effort to reduce their success.

The case you make will have me looking more carefully to upvote those who take the time to comment, whether positive or otherwise.

It's fantastic that you do this, and I try to follow suit as well. I do place an importance on the content creators who upvote real comments and people who participate along with them. It shows that you care about your community instead of just making money off of them.

Thanks and keep up the great work (and showing your support of your followers).

I have been less active on steemit recently, my general policy on comments is similar you yours, provided the comment has some relevance, it gets a vote

It's great when I come across more established Steemians such as yourself that give back to the community.

It's easy to get disheartened as a lesser established user so the giving back is really appreciated and I think it's vital to the long term health of our Steemit ecosystem :)

Agree with everything and handling upvoting comments and flagging in the same way as you.

What’s healthy trolling, though? 😄 Is there such a thing?

Sometimes I enjoy intelligent, albeit stingy comments. Probably because I tend to do that as well, sometimes :) With the caveat that my definition of "intelligent" may not be always mainstream :)

I've noticed as I look through the comments on your page that you do tend to upvote often. I was wondering why you voted so much, but after reading your post I can see that you have a long-term view of Steem. The fact that you consciously and consistently upvote other people for engaging shows that you care about the platform. There are too many people who are self-voting and doing posts so they can cash in on the rewards from the system without stopping to think that if they already have so much SP, they can greatly increase the value by spreading their votes to others. By having people who are encouraged to engage, and who produce good content, the value of the platform and of the underlying crypto currency will increase. The stake they hold will likewise increase in value. Most don't see it that way and are just draining life out of Steem while they can.

Thanks for being an example and helping to make Steem (and Steemit) strong!

By having people who are encouraged to engage, and who produce good content, the value of the platform and of the underlying crypto currency will increase.

You said it better than me :)

I usually don't upvote my upvotes, because I don't have as many as you but I will go to the peoples posts and upvote them from them and even follow them if I like their posts.
I appreciate their time and support and I always like to give support back and help as many people as I can because I know how hard it is especially when you are new.
I really appreciate your post and sharing your thoughts on upvoting.

So. I'm a "I have given one flag in the time I've been on Steemit" Wolf. Would that be like White with a black ear tip?

I upvote the comments on my posts. I really, really appreciate people that take the time to engage with me. To me, at this stage, the comments are more important than the upvote value.

Speaking of things I really appreciate... I really like your straight forward style and honesty. Thank you.

Even with my small sp I still upvote thoughtful comments made on my posts. It's my way of appreciating those who take the time to actually read the post. I do not flag spammers, I can't say I am a good or bad wolf yet cause I learned that you can only know a man's true character if you give him power. So, until am powerful enough that's when I can truly say, yes I am this or that.

Even with my small sp I don't upvote thoughtful comments made on my post.

You probably wanted to say "I upvote"...

Hahahahaha. Lord, probably one shouldnt type when at the queue in an ATM stand. Am just reading through now, thank you for the pointer.

Hey! I've used your platform to monitor my incoming payments it is very useful and I think that's how I found your blog on Steemit.

What you do is great and I like your philosophy of feeding the good wolf. About a month I was posting on Zappl and I got a lot of spam on my posts. I was very tempted to flag all of them, as a matter of fact I did it a couple of times because they were very annoying. I think I flagged only like 4 comments and then I decided to ignore them and I realized that they meant no harm. When I have a stronger Steem Power I will follow your example and distribute the wealth by upvoting comments. I already do this, but I don't have a lot of impact yet.

Thank you for your contributions to the Steemit platform and want to say that with this post you have helped me understand better the true purpose and objective of this project.

Greetings from Mexico.

Thanks, appreciate your nice words :)

I can only say you fed the right wolf by upvoting relevant comments on your posts. And thanks again for steem.supply. It really helps.
Paste Fericit!

Paste Fericit si tie :)

Which kind of wolf are you, by the way?

A good wolf in the real sense of it.

You have actually improved the definition of a witness, I always believe that what we do here have a lot to say about individual personality.

You are tolerant.

I do the same. I'm also generally curious to see how much more polite discussions of sensitive topics can be when there is a monetary reward for not being a jerk. :-)

Oh, it's nice to see a positive post. I flagged someone once. I had liked their really well written article and then discovered that ALL of their content was complete cut and paste of other people's articles. I was so incensed that I flagged them but then felt so much remorse that I never did or will flag anyone again. Instant karma 🙄

I have to say I do the same (upvote all good posts), but I had a good teacher to show me the ropes (@steevc).

I really don't know what I'm going to do if and when it gets too much though. I have been away just for a day and have spent a decent amount of time catching up, but Ill tell you its addictive and intoxicating.

I was always wondering, why you upvote my very.. Basically comments
It really does encourage to take part in a conversation, read the post better and, well, comment more often.
Maybe I will copy that behaviour from you:))

I try to upvote comments on my posts as well. For me Steemit is about community and engagement primarily.

I too like to upvote almost all the comments I get on my posts but due to low SP it hardly matters. So I find this new #steem-bounty project a good tool to reward good comments on my posts. I've only set up these bounty for my 2-3 posts non of which has paid out. So let's see how it works for me.

It's good to know that you don't flag. So I found this place safe to write whatever I wish here. The fear of bad wolf is no more. No threat 😉

I'm with you on the comment upvoting. I upvote most of mine with my little vote and have been since I got here. I feel like it helps me get better interaction and generally more post votes. I often ask a question on my posts and get answers, unlike in the rest of my life.

I have certain people who almost always comment at least on one post a day and have become friends with them. Like you, I don't have a lot of time to visit other blogs. I have a list of a few I go to daily and comment on.

I am following almost 4000 steemers and I have never checked my feed in the whole time I have been here!

One big reason to upvote comments in your comment section is that they are made by people who follow and upvote you. Of course you want those people to have as much SP as possible, right?

I agree, I do the same thing and I just like to upvote what I like with my fellow Steemit fam. One day my vote will be worth more and i will be spreading the love regardless... Great post as usual.....

Why the "poor grammar" is a problem for you. Most of us are writing in a foreign language. "Poor grammar" das not necessarily mean "poor message".

"Poor grammar" das not necessarily mean "poor massage".

Really hope you intended to do that pun :)

Ha ha, I've had a poor massage and it was given with good grammar. Still didn't like it. Wouldn't go back. 0.0

You thought about your followers is sophisticated ...I think, its your witness or gift for you followers....@dragosroua..

you are doing your best for the steemit community in every possible way :)

While my upvote currently holds no reward value, it's still an acknowledgement of effort.

i think, atleast good comments should be upvoted by everyone.

I'm sorry my English grammar is bad enough. (I'm scrambling out of the support.) But I still want to write to you that I find your reasons for support correct.

these advices should all the steemians follow 👍

You are doing good

Keep it going

wow very excellent post

What was the most excellent part about it?
