I am writing this post to see if anyone from Steemit, Inc. can help out the account holder @cupidzero.
He is a professor/educator who writes superb posts. He was busy at work and didn't realize his password had been compromised. By the time he got around to checking it had been inactive long enough it will not let him back into it.
I don't know how to help him directly, but I thought I could make a post and see if someone that sees the post can help him.
Here is the body of the email he sent me:
Hi Deva,
I know it has been some time since you have seen me on Steemit. There are various reasons for my absence, but largely it had to do with some private issues and a greatly increased teaching load this year as a colleague has fallen ill and I am picking up the slack.
Nevertheless, I have been writing a bit here and there working on my solution to the whole SJW situation and I finally wanted to log back on a few weeks ago and start posting them. Thus my note to you today.
While trying to log in, I kept getting an error. I went to my account and checked my wallet, and somebody named "keyhunter" sent me a message 4 months ago stating:
"You have leaked your master password to the public putting your account at risk. Your keys (sic!) was changed to prevent further damage. Please use account recovery process to regain your access. Be safe - @gtg"
So I went to recover my account and it now states that I can't recover my account because there has not been any activity in the last 30 days. I still have my original master key, but the recovery process won't accept it.
I checked my phone and my email during the time frame in question and see that at no time was I notified by Steemit of any issues with my account. The money in the account isn't that much of an issue, but losing the name cupidzero and the reputation I have earned by having to start over would be less than optimal, to say the least.
The @gtg account is apparently "Gandalf the Grey", who is also a Witness, and while his intent appears to have been benevolent, his intervention has actually divested me of my account entirely rather than just losing the $25 in it. Is there anything I can do to get it back?
I apologize for contacting you over Future Wave Games, but my attempts to create a new Steemit account (15 days ago) have been unsuccessful thusfar (I guess I am in the waiting queue?). You're the only person I knew how to locate, as well as the best informed person about Steemit I know. Could you report my account again to reset the recovery period maybe?
Anyway, I expect you understand the quandry I am in and I won't belabor the point.
I hope you have been well and wish you the very best.
Sincerely,
Cupid Zero
No. Steemit Inc. doesn't have any priviledged position in this case. As an account creator they were in position to be your account recover agent but that's only for 30 days after changing keys.
Well... :-)
You wouldn't lose only $25, by that time you would lose that account, reputation and all staked (over 170 STEEM) amount.
Unfortunately nobody can do that. Recovery period is set in stone.
Fortunately, because of that keyhunter research back then, YOU CAN get your account back.
Please contact me directly on steemit.chat, as Gandalf

Thanks @gtg. I'll fire this off to him in email in case he doesn't see it here.

No problem, he is a great writer, and in an interesting situation where he can write about things from a perspective many of us don't have. So I truly appreciate your efforts to help him get back on here.
Also, I never met him in person. I met him here on steemit and have really liked the posts he has written. :)

I remember something about that a few months ago.
people were posting their keys in the memo block
all gandalf the grey had to do was run a search
(geeks can do that)
and harvest keys.
He seemed to be an OK guy...contact HIM
to see if the absent minded professor can get back into his account.
