Mine was 33 day one and I didn't get upvoted once at that point so u doubt it's a rating number

It is a rating number. Lets make yours higher just because I can. Everyone starts at a specific number (usually 25) not sure why you started at 33. Sub 25 indicates the person has been downvoted for something (or more than one thing). The number then goes up with upvotes.

Thanks for the explanation. Being a newbie here means there is a ton to learn but by the looks of things it seems to be well worth the effort at the end of the day? Would you agree?

It's a good site IMO. There are some nice and some not so nice people here. It has it's share of issues, but sometimes people give you some really great rewards. Like me here to you.

Much appreciated! I look forward to progressing to a position like yours where I can also be generous to people that are making an effort and contributing. I am planning some decent posts (I.M.O). Keep your eyes peeled.

Hey @gholsa you've been on this platform for about 4 months now. How have your experiences been over that time?

Hi there. Been a lot of good. Have met a lot of really nice people. Have been some challenges relating to the recent hardfork...making things harder for newbies.

What happened?!

THANK YOU :)))))

I definitely agree! Being new, it is a bit intimidating, there is so much to learn. But practice makes progress!

Thanks I was always wondering

Thanks for the info, I just became a member and I was curious about that. How does the upvoting work?

The amount of money you give is really just your vote allocating a piece of the daily "reward pool" aka the amount of steem that are created daily. The more Steem Power you have, the more of the reward pool you can allocate, so the more your vote is worth. Does this answer your question?

Glad to find this post. I wasn’t sure what caused a number to go up or down. At first I thought it was based off of number of posts. Thanks for clearing the air, it’s acually quite difficult to find some of the info about this site! Possibly a good post for someone in the know as this thread is 8+ months old yet people are still commenting on it lol.

You've helped me there. Glad I found this post

Gotcha , I must of read an old post that talked about a rating bet 1-10
So I was confused but clearly it's now bet 1-100 I assume. Thanks for replying !

It was originally 1-10. Now it's a different scale I don't know what the max is maybe 100 but maybe it just keeps going. The minimum also isn't 1 it goes negative. I've seen someone with a -4 reputation. But when that happens their posts and comments are automatically hidden.

Haha I like that "let's make yours higher just because I can", made me laugh and reminded me of this...

Anyway I was wondering the same thing about the number by the name right now, that's how I came across this post..thanks for sharing

I wish I were half as badass as Jafar. Lets make yours higher too. Because I can.. Mua hahahahahahahahah

That’s fairly rad of you dude 😎

Maybe, but so was what I did here. Pats Self On Back

Oh wow, thanks so much! Haha I tried my best to return the favor but could only give you a cent... darn

That's okay, no need to return the favor. :)

@justtryme90 hei, i have writen a coment several minutes ago but it dissapeard. i am courious if is there any place where i can observ this "LVL" if it goes up, or down... do you have any ideea??

lol.

nothing more, nothing less #dryhumor

Thank you btw !

Interesting! Thanks for the explanation.

Like one of the other posters here, I thought it was representing my age haha. I like how you can find just about anything right on this site though, whether it's the main post or the comments! :). I can't wait to get higher reputation so more people can see my blog, thanks for the explanation!

Exactly what I thought too! But -- I am 26, so I thought I typed my age in wrong (25) haha!!

Thank you for the information i gave an upvote for the info.

I just joined steemit last week and was curious about the number. I figured it was a rating, thanks for the confirmation! Do you know what the scale is or how to know how much influence it has on payout, upvotes, etc.

It has no influence on payouts. Sorry it took me 5 months to reply.

Thank you very much for this post! I’ve been ok the platform for... almost a week now, and I’m just starting to get the hang of some of this stuff. It’s so confusing at first. Again, thank you :)

There is a steep steep... Steep learning curve. However it all becomes intuitive in time. Glad you gleaned something from the post

Oh, so that what it is. I thought it was displaying my age because I'm 25. But after few days it turned to 30, lol.

What if you just started aging more quickly!?

Haha that's funny I thought the same but then I was like " wait a minute.. how does Steemit know my age?! I didn't submit that wtf" haha the 'all knowing' social network! No for real though, lovely to be part of it :)

I thought the same exact thing because I'm 25 as well lol!

And you are already 39, boy the years go by so quickly

I've been posting and commenting - basically being active here and yet I just realized I didn't know much about this number near my name. Thank you so much for this post though :)

Youre welcome. Let's see if we can raise the number.

It did. What why 😲

Thats what upvotes do

Wow. That's how powerful a Super Sayajin 4 then. This platform keeps surprising me everyday. Thank you so much.

Thanks for the explanation through the comment section and the links. Still trying to find a foothold here

It takes time, but you will find your way. Here have $0.79

You are the Robin Hood of Steemit lol

am I?

You are. This was very helpful for me to. Just not sure where to write this with all the sub-comments...

hopefully I can get to near your level over time. I really love the whole concept of Steemit.

You will, with perseverance!

Hey share the love over here! I could use some rank raisin. Sounds like a disgusting cereal.. Rank Rasin the cereal that taste Rank. Now with Reasons!

How about $0.5 instead?

Thank you so much. All that I recieve I'm going to put towards my medical expenses. So I really do appreciate it. Check out my blogs to see my story of breaking my neck if your interested. :D

I'm glad I found this post. I wondered what the number was. Can you update the original post with the answer or do you like for people to go through the comments to find the answer? I realize it's not difficult to scroll down and see the first comment but it's just a thought :)

I can't edit the post and put the answer...Otherwise I would. The ability to edit a post is lost after it pays out. The same goes for a comment. So you can only edit for 7 days.

Thank you for this information @justtryme90 it really answered my question, but i still didn’t get it how can a vote make this number higher, is in it about how much we participate?

Your reputation is a statistic awarded to you based on the votes you receive. When someone votes you, you receive reputation points, when someone flags you you lose reputation points. The amount of reputation they can give or take away is relative to both the amount of SP they have as well as their reputation. So someone with a high reputation and a lot of SP can increase someones reputation or decrease alot depending on whether they vote or flag.

Was scrolling down looking for this post. Some of these nuances are hard to understand. Thanks. High five! :)

Hi @justryme Thanks for that explNtion, but maybe stupid question here: how do I vote or flag someone?

Thank you for this post. I was wondering what the numbers meant and that led me to your post. I love a good short sweet and to the point one. lol!

Well I am glad it got you to the right answer! The number is your site reputation, the higher the more non flagged content you have posted (or comments).

@justtryme90, reading this thread, you seem like a really cool person. :)

I try to be helpful, unless people try to take advantage of me. Then I am not so nice haha.

Lol :)

@Justtryme90, could you please help me share my post and question about blockchains. I haven’t received any responses and I’m genuinely curious. Thanks! https://steemit.com/blockchain/@countryheart/newbie-here-or-please-help-block-chains

I just googled this because i didn’t know what it meant, thankfully your post explained it well! I still feel like I have no idea what I’m doing on Steemit, but I’m getting there (slowly 😭)

Well, the post didn't explain anything, but the users in the comments sure did!

Me too! Thank you Google

Thanks for this post, mine just went to 26 and I did not know why or what for.. This helped me solve it.

Wow, did you just take me to 27? I guess I should have read some of the other posts here. Thanks!

thanks for this info

Thank you so much! I’m new to Steemit and I have been looking for this answer for a while. Still figuring out how this number, the amount of reward and the number of upvotes correlate!!!

Hi. I'm new here and this is one of my first comments on any posts in Steemit. I was also wondering what the number beside my name meant so I searched for answers and your post was the first one in the results. Great help! Especially for newcomers like myself. :)

yup, exactly what i was searching for.. im new here and everything seems so confussing :/ thanks for helping guys

Here ya go, have some pennies too. If you come across questions just ask me here and I'll try to help.

Really?! Thanks you!! Yours help is appreciated :DD

Actually , I do have a question but i really dont wanna bother...

It's not a bother. Go right ahead.

Well, thanks
yesterday, i was approved by steemit, and i was really working hard, i have written a long post about my life and how some things inspired me, and i really put alot of time into it.. but noone seems to like it or see it : (... idk what to do and im writting posts all the time :)
thank you again.

This is like any other blogging platform. You aren't going to get attention right away.

yesterday, i signed up for reddit, and i was really working hard, i have written a long post about my life and how some things inspired me, and i really put a lot of time into it.. but noone seems to like it or see it : (... idk what to do and im writting posts all the time :)

I changed steemit to Reddit for another example, do you think people would care there? Do you think they would shower you with up votes for a story about your life? Do you think anyone cares about what inspires you? Do you think how much time you put into it matters?

The answer to all of those questions is yes and no.

Okay so you are a new user, new bloggers anywhere often take YEARS to see success with their work. Some of them are making excellent blogs but nobody sees it. Its just how things go. On steemit it IS much EASIER then on other blogging platforms, it doesn't take years here.

New users on reddit also get ignored much of the time. Name recognition matters, in life, and in social media. You need to BUILD a brand, it doesn't just get gifted to you.

but noone seems to like it or see it : (

Maybe it wasn't interesting to people. Keep at it. Blogging is not a natural skill, you have to work at it. Steemit is not "easy money."

and i really put alot of time into it

This is necessary, but really nobody cares how hard you worked on a post. When I first started I spent a lot of time with many of my posts and got nothing for them as well. But I kept working and working and working and eventually people started to take notice. It took MONTHS. Keep in mind the community was even smaller then, so it was much easier to get noticed, now its even harder, and as the community continues to grow it will keep getting harder. So work at building a brand now and you will be way way way ahead of people who are signing up even 6 months from now.

The moral of the story is, you are new, if you want success you have to work at it. It may take a long time, or it may never come. It all depends on whether people are interested in the content you are creating.

Good luck! Keep trying! I'm sure you will do okay!

Hey buddy my number is 26 but a friend of mine started with 36 even he register a month later than me. Do you think the username itself have affect on it!!

No, username has no effect. The votes you receive do. I can raise yours by voting for you.

See, now you went from 26 to 34

Man, im speechles you are an extremly good person for helping me like that.. thank you and i will not give up!!! :)

Its gonna take time man. Work hard, talk to people like you are to me here. Get known by the people who are posting about the things you are interested in. That will help you build your brand.

i will not give up!!! :)

Good to hear! Have a great day.

I am new today. Just curious: how has it worked for you so far? Not easy to understand steemit right away.

Probably one of the first questions us noobs ask!!
Thanks for the post / comments.

When I made this post, I was a noob :)

Thank you guys for the explanation but I wonder why the default is 25. Is this arbitrary? Just curious. Also, what would the max be and the low be? Thanks in advance!

It is just what was set, I don't know that there is a max or minimum.

Mine is 37. How much reward do I give if I upvoted a post? Thank you

The reward your vote gives is not determined by your reputation score, but rather the amount of steem power you hold.

Thanks for this! I've been curious about it for awhile and finally gave into curiosity and searched around for an answer. Ended up here =D

It used to be a somewhat valuable reputation metric. However now, thanks to the embrace of Bidbots its entirely useless, as one can just pay their way to an extremely high reputation with out the need to generate anything of value at all.

I've noticed this lately as well =( Yesterday I found a user who only posts a motivational quote found on Google once a day and every one of his posts reach over $100.00. It's a bit disheartening, as i've seen a lot of really talented artists on here post nothing but original content they've worked extremely hard on, networked for a decent reputation, and ultimately receive maybe 80 or 90 cents a post at best.

In that case you must take into consideration that in order to earn that $100 they are paying basically that same amount to the promotion bots. They really aren't earning all that much.

The 0.90 you talk about, at least is earned for the content.

Ah, gotcha. Wasn't sure how generating revenue from promo bots worked on here.

Not well. They supposedly provide you with a 15% return, however during a bear market that doesn't exactly work out well. The returns are comparatively small.

well thanks for the info!

You're welcome :)

Mine is 4. Looking forward to the update on what this is

Thank you for taking the time to respond!

Perhaps it is reputation? How does this reputation number get determined!?

I'm new here and still trying to figure it all out, but yes, they made updates today. Now, users have a reputation number next to their name that has been determined by how many times that user has been upvoted or downvoted. Judging from what I've seen in the last little bit, I would say 7 is a pretty solid number to have. :)

It would probably be higher but I got mass flagged (as in people flagged everything I ever posted) for flagging people who spammed the science tag a few weeks back. People were pretty mad about it.

I was just wondering that myself. My concern is for the victims of the self appointed steemit police or trolls who abuse downvoting because of some personal issues. I got flagged by someone who has a reputation for doing just that. I think the whole point of this platform, really, is to get rewarded..right? Why downvote anybody? I guess I'm a bit confused. Thanks for clarifying the number, @jazzyfish

Well I think people who are trying to abuse the system should be downvoted. I mean sure the point of this platform is to get rewarded, but it should be an even playing field (or at least as even as possible). The rep system here should help take care of people who abuse the sytem as they will get downvoted a lot and have bad rep. It should also take care of people who unfairly downvote a lot because they will piss people off and get dowvoted a lot themselves and also have bad rep.

Thanks for the info, great post.
I found your post due to a search I enacted for when I went to my wallet today I saw the number beside my name was half of what it was yesterday from (50) to (25) and I freaked assuming my rating had been halved. But then I went to my blog and the number was not halved and was still at 50. Do you know what is going on here?
Thanks in advance for consideration of this matter.
Regards

I think the platform is undergoing some development changes under the hood, and it is not accessing the data to display the reputation number correctly right away sometimes. This is why it displays the default number (25)... but then will update later to your real number (50).

Steemit is actively under development, so these sorts of hickups are to be expected.

Aren't we all continually undergoing development? ;) I know I am and I'm approaching 60 years old. It's all about the journey and not the destination.

Thanks for the info.

Peace
@daemon-nice

I'm still at 25 but have been upvoting and got some on my introduction post. I am new but I'm watching people I started with's numbers go up and mine stays 25 :( I wish I was still 25 years old, maybe that's why lol

Depends on the reputation of the people voting on you. I for instance could raise your reputation quite a bit with a vote. However I can't vote on a comment that is so old, nothing will happen.

I've had this happen too. Usually it's when I go to my wallet to collect my author or curator rewards. For some reason, when I click the little black box, that number goes to 25. But if I refresh the screen, or go to another tab and come back to the wallet, then it's back to the correct number. I take is as a good little reminder to be grateful for what I have. 😁

@justtryme90 This is an awesome thread. These posts are cracking me up!

I bet you could kick Jafar's butt.

Lol! But seriously, I've mentioned in several posts and interviews that my earliest Steemit inspirations we're @papa-pepper, @coruscate & @gringalicious because they all comment regularly and really interact with their followers. I've been on the platform nearly 7 months, but hadn't come across your work until this post. I have to tell you, I'm impressed you're still replying to an old post. That shows that you're not just in it for the $, but rather to help others and still interact in an entertaining way while sharing pertinent information!

Now you've got me curious to check out your profile!

Cheers!

Great, that makes sense. Keeps everyone in check. I do like seeing the progress!

Thank you for this post, I'm still trying to figure out my way around here!

No problem.

I was trying to understand! Then i found your question! Thank you all for your information

Same here

ah sorry didn't see you already posted...

Thank you!

@justtryme90 Thanks so much for making this post. I'm new here too and was just wondering what the number meant. A quick google search brought me here.

Thanks, I found this while searching on google. I am still 25 for some reason :(

It's my first hour learning about this new platform and the first thing I noticed that looked odd was that number. I thought it was my age but hell I just turned 23. So this gave me a butt-load of tips how this ranking system works. Thanks a lot!

Thanks for helping guys. I am new here and I was wondering the same :)

What an awesome thread. I love how even 2 years on the poster @justtryme90 os still jumping in and sharing their knowledge. I am loving steemit! Goodbye facebook!

Thanks, now I know what the number means.

Just found this post in a google search.. still helpful two years later :)

Thank you for clarifying this.

Haha, I thought it was supposed to be my age. But as I'm not 25 anymore I was looking for a way to change it :) Glad, that I understand it now :)

That also wandering me .

I just check this now and it seems I have a long way to go. Any help?

Thanks for the post and all the comment answers. So does the ranking tie into steem power holdings or can I do other things to increase my rank?

Is this related to upvotes more so than SP?

glad i found this post becuase i was wondering the same exact thing hahaha

Glad it was useful.

Hello @justtryme
Mine was 33 day one and I didn't get upvoted once at that point so u doubt it's a rating number.
thanks for the post

It's a ratings number. Would you like me to flag you at full power and obliterate yours? That would prove it to you right? :P
