Not all communities on Steemit work like Korean, Spanish or even Polish - there are many “terra incognita” on language map of the world. Ten months ago I have created Map and analysis of ALL non-English European communities on Steemit with my advices about tags and since then many people came and some of them went away. Steemit had it’s ups and downs. English is still the main language on this platform but others make their own tag enclaves and it’s working quite good for them.
In this series I would like to focus on those languages. I will try to find non-English communities and if it won’t be possible - maybe it will help to create such communities in the future? Few advices regarding tags included!
And today I will write about Icelandic.
Informations
Official language in: Iceland.
Native speakers: 358 000 (2013).
The Icelandic-speaking world from Wikipedia
Ten months ago it looked like this:
Only one post and it was published in 2016. How can we even talk about Icelandic community?
What have changed since then? Let’s have a look (till the end of February).
ICELAND
Tag based on English name of the country usually doesn’t work. Take any country name and look at posts. It’s the same here - only two Icelandic posts and more than a thousand written in other languages. That’s not the way.
ICELANDI
I don’t know what this word means - maybe it’s a simple mistake? But there was only one post long time ago so I guess there is no future in this tag.
ICELANDIC
Well... there are not too many Icelandic posts here, but there are also not so many other posts. Till now it’s still the best option for building a community.
IDN
This is strange, because the same tag was used by some of the Albanian posts and it also has nothing to do with Icelandic language (obviously it’s Indonesian). Nothing more to say here.
ISLAN
Is this a short version for country name or language name? Maybe. More important thing - there are some Icelandic posts with this tag. But not as many as we would like to see.
Other Icelandic posts
Well… that were all possible tags for building Icelandic community. But if we look for more posts then we will find them, they simply have random/wrong tags so it’s almost impossible to find them.
So... Icelandic community?
This will be hard. We know that there are people who write in Icelandic language but they need to organize themselves and use only one tag if they want to create any community. I would say it will be the best to use one of three options (low risk for other posts):
- icelandic (English name of language),
- islenska (native name of language),
- isl (based on language ISO).
Good luck!
Next languages?
I have some propositions for next parts of this series: Bulgarian, Romanian, Latvian, Czech, Slovak and Ukrainian.
What do you think? What language would you like to see next? Will it help somebody?

I haven't seen the first of this series, but this is pretty awesome. I can only assume how difficult it is to gather the data about posts not posted under specific tags, but in a specific language. I'm off to reading the first one now and can't wait for more!
