thoughts and fixes i’m deploying for my online courses and creation for the next year.

every so often i sit down and see where i am with everything, august is a good month for me to build out and prepare the next layout and look and make the process of building out the courses i make better, from the short ones to the longer ones i’m always looking at the student count, interactions and feedback that i get, what’s missing, how i can improve on that knowing that if i fix any issues there then the viewership and the word of mouth will go up.

for the last few months i’ve been posting absolutely nothing on one of my course accounts, i’ve not been able to focus and it’s been causing me some anxiety, depression and huge amounts of frustration, i’ve felt i could not convey properly the information in the way that would be helpful so i’ve just not sat down to record because i felt that i would be doing an injustice to not only myself for not getting the best version of the information out but also cause myself problems by not delivering what someone who takes the course needs.

it’s made me re-evaluate everything in terms of how you progress going through the course, i’ve built in notes now at the end of every thirty minute section so you can take action. after a year of data (i admit on a limited data set of only a few live courses on udemy and fragmented mini courses on skillshare) but i’m realising that having people purchase a course is not enough for me if they buy then don’t go through it. i guess i should be happy in some ways, most business would stack it high and sell it cheap not worrying about the outcome, the sale is done and you and them are on the way.

if not stated some of my photos are from unsplash a free site for images, also you can grab some cool images from nomad.pictures a site i run with @dayleeo to get pictures out of the camera roll and onto the web

problem is for me i’m more interested in you coming in as a newbie and leaving informed and activated, especially for the next course, live streaming with OBS, i know a lot more people are getting into live streaming, be it gaming or for their hobby or business and they want to learn how to do it properly. i had one paying upwork client, i lovely women with four lovely children that does a weekly show on facebook, after a few weeks she was looking to improve, tighten things up, make sure things went reliable every week — something that comes with time anyway, you noticed those issues the more you do it, i guess i enjoy the consulting part more because i can see people get the result they want.

i’ve not done anything on udemy for over eight months but the live courses i’ve had there do make me, weirdly with zero promotion little bits of income, the income that comes in will go on data sims, fuel or food. it’s never enough to put in a rainy day fund but i’m thankful for whatever comes in. the urge is to do lots more courses about the things i know and live off the seemingly residual income that comes in but i want more than that. i want to have the bond of the tribe of people that come in and wants to take the course, wants to take action and deploy. maybe i’m just an energy vampire and that uplifts me too when i see people activate and do it instead of just signing up for the course, watching a few parts and then not applying.

and i think that’s the major issue here, apathy.

you look for, read the reviews, pay for the course and plan that you’ll go through it, learn what you can and apply it. thing is we have different audiences with different attention spans. i knew for a fact that i can be very ADD when it comes to needing the information, try it, refine it to my purpose and then i’m out, onto the next thing like a technological nemo fish chasing the blockchain boats through the ocean! :)

cha cha changes

so my next course is an improvement (i think) on the initial idea i had in keynote, it’s less pretty right now in terms of style and animation but i’m working that into the new format that i’ve built completely in OBS as scenes and sources. it took me a few weeks to get it together but i’ve got a template structure now to step through and record things and at the same time work offline on the text files that are used as includes in the main program, it just allows me more flexibility with my head state too.

for instance, if i know i’m going to be travelling between two points and i’m getting a train or a plane i know i’m going to have an hour or three sitting there, i’d rather use that as quality work time while i’m travelling between points to get the admin work done, then when i arrive, chill down, wake up the next day and start recording. i’m basically designing the course structure to work around the way my life is or could be. i think that’s super important when your in transition in life but need your online digital silos to be in order to generate you income around the clock. your time banks are what get the audience, views and engagement if done correctly.

my next course for OBS will be therefore be different, a new format utilising callouts and call to action every section, every thirty minutes or so. means you can jump in, jump around and know that you have a thirty minute block ahead, perfect for breaks at work, lunchtime, re-watching and at the end of each block an action list to execute on, i ask you take notes with paper and and a pen as we go. i want people to execute on the information rather than it wash over them and they feel it’s too big for them to development their own process. i’ve learned that people need help with the process to fit around their lives rather than just the information.

i’ve also built in letting people know how long the next block will be (most are designed for 30 minutes or so) and how long it will be to complete the course, i’ve taken a bunch of these cues from things like xmbc and netflix and other media players i use. they help me make an informed decision of how to utilise my time. with us spending more and more time in front of a screen and less in front of a television set people want to utilise their time in an efficient way — or should i say, that’s what i’m trying to promote.
