Read the Khoisan story of the Sun and write your own story - English reading and writing Gr 4

First read the story told by the Khoisan about the Sun and then look at the guideline to write your own story.

A long long time ago the Sun was a man.  From his armpits the rays of light shone brightly.  He lived all by himself in a hut far away from any people and he was the only one that could see his light.

One night a group of Khoisan children got lost in the forest and they came across the hut.  When they went into the hut they saw the man sleeping with the beautiful rays coming from his armpits.  They took him outside and threw him into the air so that his light would shine over all the people.

The man was happy up in the sky but at night he still draws the blanket of darkness over him to stay warm.  This blanket is very old and is full of holes, so at night the Sun rays still shines through the holes and make stars.

This story is a legend, which means it is a story made up, not true and told from generation to generation.

You are now going to make up your own story that you can tell small children.  Use your imagination - there is no right or wrong story, just you and your imagination.

If you have a problem making up your own story, you can re-tell a story that you have heard or read.

Look at the following to help you write the story (you do not have to use it if you want to write something else it is fine)

You can start your story in these ways

  • Once upon a time ....
  • Before the Sun came, the world was dark ....
  • In the beginning of the world .....

You can end your story in these ways

  • That is why the Sun lives in the sky.
  • That is why the Sun only comes out during the day.
  • That is why the Sun and moon never meets.

You can watch the video for inspiration - if you want to re-tell this story, it is also fine - as long as you use your own words.
