First aid course for children can save lives!

We all pay great attention to our children and protect them as much as possible. Sometimes accidents happen and the right first aid can sometimes save lives. Therefore, all parents should complete a first aid course and keep the knowledge always up to date.

Poisoning, injuries, convulsions - all this can happen to any child, however much we parents take care of us. It takes a while until the ambulance arrives or until you arrive at the hospital. But first aid after an accident is often crucial and can save the child from harm. In classes that specifically address the risks to children, parents learn everything they need.

The most important children's topics

The risks of injury to children and infants differ in part from those of adults. That's why it's important to book a course that's tailored to children. The weight and height of our little ones require different rescue measures than adults. How do you ventilate a baby? How do you deal with children who have swallowed foreign bodies or drunk cleaners? What do you do if a child has a head injury or fever? All these questions and special cases will be answered in the first aid course, in theory and practice the necessary measures will be explained.

Where are first aid courses for children offered?

In many kindergartens, but also in the schools there are regular refresher courses. Mostly there is a trained paramedic, who is also trained in teaching and keeps the course. Also facilities like the Red Cross, the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund, the Johanniter-Unfallhilfe or the Malteser-Hilfsdienst offers courses again and again. Some of the courses have different topics such as poisoning or emergencies. Even those who complete a complete first aid course, the module "First Aid in children" claims. The courses should be refreshed every two years.

Where children are particularly at risk

Children are not small adults. They do not take the world so far ahead and are carefree in dealing with experiences. In some cases this even protects them from injury, as the uncertainty due to fear, which often leads to accidents, is not present - on the other hand, they can hardly or not at all estimate risks and are therefore particularly endangered in some areas. The following accident risks are particularly relevant for our little ones:

  • Poisoning through the use of dishwashing or cleaning agents, medicines, alcohol or tobacco
  • Asphyxiation caused by swallowing of items or food such as grapes or pieces of carrot
  • Fall injuries, head injuries, fractures, worn teeth
  • Seizures due to pseudo-group or febrile convulsions
  • Allergic reaction
  • Accidents in the water with or without respiratory arrest

Parents who have learned in a first aid course how to behave in these accidents can respond adequately and often protect their child from the worst. A major issue is the emergencies, but also the relief of common ailments such as fever or cough are discussed in the courses.

What are the costs of first aid courses?

Depending on the provider and price, the prices are different. With the Red Cross, a course costs about 15 to 35 euros, private providers are sometimes more expensive. Refresher courses can be visited free of charge by some providers upon presentation of the course certificate. The duration of a first aid course for children is usually 6 double hours. However, the duration may vary - as well as the content - depending on the provider.
