Isn't it amazing how fast you react when you feel something. Our sense of touch is amazing, but this begs the question:
- How do we know when to react?
- What causes our body to react?
So I hope after the following information you will be able to answer all the above question.
The layers of the skin
Our skin consist out of three main layers:
1. Epidermis
The epidermis is the outer layer of the skin that provides a waterproof barrier as well us the skin tone.
2. Dermis
The dermis is beneath the epidermis layer which contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles and sweat glands.
3. Hypodermis
The hypodermis is also known as the deeper subcutaneous tissue and it is made of fat and connective tissue.

Science experiment: Edible Skin Layers Cake
For some this will be a gruesome one but for others this will be very interesting and fun.
You will need the following:
- Red jello
- Mini Marshmallows
- Fruit roll up
- Twizzlers (those that pull apart)
Instructions
- DO THE PREVIOUS NIGHT: Make the red jello and put the marshmallows on top of the unset jelly.
- The next morning run a knife around the sides to make sure that the jello is unstuck from the sides.
- Turn the dish upside down and plot it out onto a big enough dish.
- Take your fruit roll up and poke some holes in it with a skewer or a tooth pick. Place it on top of the jello.
- Pull the licorice apart and cut the "hairs" to the desired lengths and stick them into the places where you pokes the holes.
In the edible cake you can find the following layers:
- Hypodermis (The marshmallows)
