It rained heavily in Hangzhou this weekend. I planed to go out and take some pictures to write posts. Because of the rainstorm, I had a reason to stay at home. It was a perfect afternoon to watch a heart-warming movie, and I suddenly remembered a movie called Destiny: Kamakura Monogatari, which regarded as the Japanese version of Monster Hunt and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
The Plot Synopsis
Kazakura, who was born in Kamakura, is an unsuccessful mystery writer and police detective consultant. When he was a little boy, he doubted that whether he was an illegitimate child. As a result, though he is popular with women, he still harboured the idea of celibacy. All changed when he in the face of the editor, Yakoko, who was more than a decade younger than him.
The couple quickly fell in love and settled back in Kamakura after they got married. They lived with an old woman, who was already hundred years old, and she was in a good body condition. I thought the days would go on like this, but Yakoko has be targeted by the monster of the underworld.
He first tricked the couple into eating the poisonous mushrooms that would break out of their souls after humans ate them. Later, when Yakoko on her way to find Kazakura, she was tripped and the monster stole her body. Yakoko became a spirit, and she did not want her husband to lose his life to save her. After leaving a letter, she initiatively followed the death on the road to the netherworld.
However, the husband who has always had the tendency to escape from reality finally stopped shrinking away and decided to take his wife back to the world.
The film’s hero is Masato Sakai, and the heroine is Mitsuki Takahata, who recently declared that she would get married. The film’s reviews have been mixed. The positive comments focused on intent and scene setting, while the negative comments mainly about the indecisive and sloppy of the plot.
When I wrote this film review, I read the comments of Douan Film and found that there were many comments that said: the previous story was too long, many of them were meaningless, and the climax came too late.
I don’t deny that I like movies with high speed, and movies described at great length will make me sleepy, like A Brighter Summer Day. However, the story of Kamakura Monogatari is not dilatory. Neither the Goblins Market nor the Impoverished God living with them is meaningless. In addition, the increasing love between Kazakura and Yakoko foreshadowing the later story.
I remembered that once I read about the definition of Delayed Gratification, which means leaving something delicious for the last time, rather than eating it immediately. I think that a good movie is a test of people’s delayed gratification. As the plot progresses, you will find the foreshadows of the characters previously arranged, which will be reflected in the end.
The one-way tram that leads the spirits between Kamakura and the underworld every morning is truly impressive. It’s easy to think of A Voyage of Chihiro when the tram is moving on overhead tracks.
The Enoshima Dentetsusen we are talking about appears in the classic scene of the ending song in the Slam Dunk, which is also a must-see scenic spot for a trip to the Island of Rriver.
The netherworld in this story is no longer the horrible appearance in our impression. In the film, it’s more like a beginning of a new life. The appearance of the netherworld depends on the imagine in your mind. As a consequence, a thousand people are likely to have the appearance of a thousand netherworld.
Every time the Enoshima Dentetsusen delivered people to the netherworld, relatives and friends who have passed away before will greet them at the station. If we live in this way after we passed away, will it reduce our fear of death?
Destiny: Kamakura Monogatari is also known as the Japanese version of the Coco. I think the reason is that both of them use the light narrative way and angle to expound the topic of life and death.
In a country like Japan, especially in Kamakura, which gave birth to the spirit of bushido, the discussion of death has always been gorgeous and solemn. I think the people who have seen the movies Okuribito and Shitsurakuen will understand what I mean. Kamakura Monogatari uses fairy tales to make death seems less heavy.
The side story of the film is also praiseworthy, which has a lot of cuteness and tears.
The friend of Kazakura died of a serious illness. He was concerned about his wife and daughter, so he applied for being ghost at the Bureau of Death. The Bureau of Death advised him to keep his life alive at the expense of his friends or family. Unwilling to hurt the people he treasures, he applied to be a frog head monster.
At first, when he saw another man taking care of his wife and daughter, he was too jealous to do something wrong almost. And when he saw that the man was really determined to give them happiness, he finally decided to let go and continue to be a frog distributing balloons in the park. The scene above is he with his daughter.
As mentioned in the plot outline, Kazakura harboured the idea of celibacy, while he changed his mind when facing Yakoko, and I can’t help thinking that Kazakura has been waiting for her all these years.
As expected, the film explains why they fell in love at first sight. It turns out they were a couple hundreds of years ago and have been married countless times over the years. They will meet, fall in love and stay together finally,no matter which palingenesis. How romantic it is!
Would I remember you if I lost my memory?
In the film, both Kazakura and his father are willing to go the the netherworld to save who they love. In an age when ambiguity is a living skill, people who know each other so well can turn around and leave without saying a word. I doubt that whether we still would find someone who will go through everything to take after us like our parents.
Do you have one person who is willing to give up everything for her?
Kazakura has been doing nothing right for a while. Later, he found out that it was the Poor God sneakily live in his house. Everyone was afraid of the Poor God, but Yakoko was happy to keep him and entertain him politely. One afternoon, the Poor God said he was going to the next house. In order to appreciate for Yakoko’s kindness, he insisted on giving her a bowl.
This bowl was the key to Kazakura’s success in saving his wife in netherworld. In the end, you’ll find that even though the Poor God is hated and abandoned by ordinary people, God is still God.
Speaking of Kamakura, the first thing that came to my mind was the Slam Dunk, which is the the post-80s generation’s precious memory. There’re other movies: Kamakura Diary、 好きな人がいること 、陽だまりの彼女、シン・ゴジ. At the same time, there are also traces of the lives of Yasunori Kawabata, Yukio Mishima and Natsume Soseki.
In the history and culture of Japan, Kamakura has extremely rich connotation and important status. It is not even inferior to Kyoto and nara. Since ancient times, Kamakura has been filled with many strange little stories, and people who live there have not surprised about them at all.
Once I saw a topic on douban: Where is Our Kamakura? The concentrated answers include Dunhuang and Suzhou. However, I consider that the most suitable answers is Hangzhou. Hangzhou has many mysterious stories, such as The legend of The White Snake, The Butterfly Effect, etc. At the same time, there are many attractions that are closely linked to myths and historical stories: Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, Leifeng Pagoda, The Tomb of Little Su, and so on.
Well, where is your Kamakura?
位于江南水乡的杭州,本身就是一个汇集了很多神话故事的地方——《白蛇传》 The legend of the White Snake、《梁祝》 The Butterfly Effect等神话故事。
