Stress can sneak up on you when you least expect it and quickly make your life more difficult than it needs to be. From poor sleep quality to poor health decisions, stress can wreak havoc on our bodies and minds without us even realizing what’s happening. It’s important to find healthy methods of dealing with stress so we can live more balanced lives and perform at our very best in all areas of our lives, not just at work or school or in our personal relationships, but also in the gym, out in the community and elsewhere.
Here are five ways to destress that are both simple and healthy!
Sleeping Habits
A good sleep routine is one of the most important things you can do for your mental health. You'll feel rested, refreshed, and better able to cope with stress. Try going to bed at the same time each night, getting enough sleep, keeping a regular waking schedule (including weekends), avoiding caffeine before bedtime, and practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing.Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is the practice of using certain smells to heal. Aromatherapy can be very helpful for people who struggle with anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder. There are a number of ways you can do aromatherapy; one way is through diffusers. Diffusers release scents into the air that make your home smell nice.Taking a hot bath
Taking a hot bath can be a great way to destress. Fill your tub with some Epsom salts (or any other kind of salt) and add some essential oils. If you have the time, let the water warm up while you go do something else for ten minutes or so. When you come back, take off your clothes and get in! The warmth of the water will make it easier to relax.Spending time in nature
Nature has a way of making us feel relaxed, happy, and at peace. It can also be a great way to avoid feeling overwhelmed by the things that are stressing you out. Whether you're going for a walk, gardening, or taking your dog for a walk in the park, there are plenty of ways that being outside can help you destress.Solitude
One of the most effective ways to distrain is by taking a moment for ourselves. Sometimes, all it takes is a walk around the block, a few minutes in the shower, or even a few moments sitting in silence. Meditation is another great way to distrain. It's been shown that meditation can lower stress levels as well as blood pressure. Take five minutes out of your day (or an hour) and find peace with yourself. You'll feel refreshed and ready to face whatever challenges may come your way.
