"This is too weird"
You think to yourself. You're cold and the pain in the finger you're sucking isn't feeling any better. Maybe the tree had some kind of hallucinogen in it. You figure you'd better head home, and find a doctor if you're still seeing wonky things. Your phone has disappeared in the destruction of your backpack, so you'd better get back on the trail and head home before it gets too dark. You walk back through the woods, and as the sun dips lower in the sky, you begin to feel better. Convinced that everything you saw was maybe just a dream or an overactive imagination, you reach your car. You glance back at the forest as you get in. The sun is still peeking above the treeline, and a small breeze waves the top branches. You can imagine that the trees are waving a sad goodbye to you.
As you drive away, you notice a sign going up, "Managed by Mill Lumber" now covers the state park sign. When you get home and do a brief internet search for the park, you see that it was recently sold by the state to a supposedly sustainable lumber company to help shore up the state budget, and that it will be closed to the public for the foreseeable future.
