I have been in love with command and conquer series since around firestorm (first game in the series I played) though I have played most of the games (there is only 1 game in the series I haven't played is Sole Survivor)
The only problem with standalone mods in my opinion is that, in my experience, there aren't communities built for modding them (ironic huh) where as with modding the base game you can use different methods to get multiple mods active or to consolidate the mods.
It's a solid mod, but I agree with your statement about standalone mods. Mental Omega is probably more popular. Also, A Path Beyond, the Renegade mod is doing well even after all these years.
As for Sole Survivor, the Scavenge game mode in Skirmish sort of covers that.
