The OId Dog Says: Forget Fast Food, What do You Think of This SLOW Food? Mmmmm or Ughhhhhh?steemCreated with Sketch.

Slow food? Snails are slow and they are considered a delicacy especially when they're called escargot!

Today, during our 3 day tour of the Barolo Region of Italy we ended off our exploration of the area by visiting the town of Bra (I know, I know, it looks funny in English but that's the name!). What did we find there?

While in Bra we Surmised  That Snail is a Much Loved Delicacy!

I consider myself quite open minded and adventurous when it comes to food, especially for an Old Dog like me! I have, in fact, tried Escargot in fine French restaurants, Frog in the Canadian Wilderness and even snake in Morocco! Hey, I'm even impressing myself!

I've always thought of snail, though, as cooked in butter and served just one way. Imagine my surprise when I found an entire shop in Bra that is dedicated to snail!

Here is The Snail Shop! The Best Place to Buy Slow Food!

So here's the store. "Lumache" is the Italian word for Snail and this shop is all snail all the time! The Sign reads "Snails of High Quality!"

More Pictures Showing All The Different Snail Preparations!

Here are different sauces made from Snails. Hot and spicy, with spinach and bacon, with mushrooms etc...

So much to choose from and so little time! These jars have snails in the shell that have been marinated in different flavored oils.

Cans of snails and empty shells to serve the different preparations in.

More snail shells and a holder to both cook and serve all things snail.

Here is a poster advertising different beauty products made form snails!

We even saw this butcher shop in Bra (there's that name again) advertising Snail Salami!

So When it Comes to Snail is it Mmmmm or Ughhhhhhh?

I believe that when it comes to cuisine it's all a matter of what you're used too, what you grew up with. Having said that, and at the cost of seeming close minded, for me it's an ughhhh. Hey, maybe I could change my mind but for now I'll stick with other things!

What About You?

  • Would you be interested in trying these various snail preparations?
  • Are you an open minded and adventurous eater?
  • What is the most unusual thing that you've sampled?

I hope that you enjoyed this article "Forget Fast Food, What do You Think of This SLOW Food? Mmmmm or Ughhhhhh?"

Until next time,

I used to eat snails, and loved them, in Marrakesh many years ago. But haven't had any since. Not sure why.

Marrakesh! That's where I ate snake!

Why did you have to go all the way to Marrakesh to eat snake? I thought you had a big one around your home.

ha ha ha I thought it is hilarious when you say it this way. :)

Sure beats fast food, I might actually give snails a try now,...;)

Go for it and let me know!

Sorry, no idea and no comments ...in fact a loooong commentary if you care to read:

Why Am I Concerned With Your Eating Habits?

God bless you!

Hi @xyzashu, I know and respect your thinking on the subject. Thanks for the link!

Slow cooked snails, a delicious taste, have to eat them fast...

Good one, very funny!

hii dear @kus-knee, in detail you wrote there about "Slow Food" included snails and different dishes and very amazing pictures shared.i think you enjoyed much.your excitement shows your enjoyement. thanks dear for sharing wonderful well written article.good luck.
Steem On!

Thanks so much @rabeel!

Surely they are delicious, but I would never eat them as they are animals that suffered before dying. Recently I ate everything, various meat and seefood (but never ate snails), then I became very ill this year, in February. As I recovered, all meats, fish and other animal flesh (no matter is it raw or roast) became smelly, stinky for me! I'm sick of the smell of barbecue! Since that time I eat only veggies, cereals and organic dairy, sometimes organic eggs.
Of course I think fastfood is unhealthy. I eat slowly, after I blessed my food in this way: Thanks for the Creator! Thanks for Mother Earth! And thanks for all the people that helped me to have this food! Let become light in us!

@kalemandra, I'm glad that you have chosen veggies & cereals as your diet over animals. And I'm impressed that one of the reasons you mentioned is to not to contribute to the sufferings of the animals. But did you know animals do suffer and are even slaughtered to produce egg and dairy too? So are these too gonna off your plate soon or are you okay with it?

Yes, I know, that's why I buy only homestead goat-cheese and homestead eggs. These are all organic, and the animals live in a natural way, eating natural food. I avoid factory-food.

Well, good to hear that! I don't feel comfortable to prolong the discussion here but soon I'd be writing a post on this subject and would send you a link to it. It will be my pleasure if you can go through it (it won't be too lengthy, I promise).

Thanks for your attention and kind thoughts towards all sentient beings! 💓

Sometimes I feel like adopting that diet as well. actually I don't eat much meat at all. Tonight it's a BIG salad and garlic bread!

That's good! Salad with green spices, olive oil, balsamic vinegar and some Mozzarella, with a fresh baguette :))) Yummy-yummy!

I completely agree with you, everyone has a different concept of food, it comes from childhood, I will not eat snails a.

So true but we can change!

My father made snail food and they are really delicious. But your title - Slow Food - made me laugh to tears when I realized you were talking about snails @kus-knee tip! 0.1

Thanks a lot. Much appreciated!

You are welcome - exellent - amazing - Champion post and unique @kus-knee Old Lion

I tried that once or twice as a kid. Can't remember what it taste like.... Probably never going to eat them again after having them in fish tanks as glass cleaners.

Hahaha good one!

I would certainly give them a chance! Unusual food items have always intrigued me since I was a small child, and I always liked things with odd textures and flavors. Your post left me intrigued, as I'm not sure I could imagine the taste of a snail! I'd think it would be quite slimy, but perhaps not if it is prepared properly... Maybe it would be similar to seafood? (This is my only reference point--- other things that live in shells!) Thanks for the education and for jogging my imagination @kus-kee. Once I get the opportunity, I think I shall try eating escargot!

I like your spirit of adventure!

Personally, I find snails about as appetizing as what I posted today... Now I'm going back to bed. I'm sick (God I hope I die soon) and trying to do a little curating between bouts of nausea!

Get well soon @richq11! Better days will come!

Thanks Buddy! I know... I just hate being sick- I couldn't even write anything today. I woke up in the middle of the night sick- that's the worst part, when you're half asleep trying to figure out what's wrong!

On a super positive not you're at a 69 rating and soon to tick over to 70. AMAZING!

But this is my job and I can't afford days off! I'll be fine tomorrow, just one of those bouts of nausea, they never last!

Even the staving contestants on the "Alone" survival reality show only eat them as a last resort ;-)

Yes I saw an episode where they ate snails. Even while starving they almost heaved!

Hi @kus-knee in Nigeria here west Africa, we have a lot af snail in so many dampy areas expecially when it rains, i really like how it was rebranded anf repackaged here. Enjoy it.

@josediccus here

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Do you eat them in Nigeria?

@kus-knee we devour them eat them to stupor lol Nigeria is a haven of snail.

Good to know!

I sense you enjoy slow food which is probably healthier than any fast food out there as long as it has not been processed. Any thoughts on turtle? Is trendy or do the commoners take part too? Thanks..

I've never tried turtle and at this stage in my life I'll eat my veggies!

obviously avoiding fast food is a good idea, but snail food? no idea
Cheers!

I'll stick to salad!

love the word... slow food, lol... but not for me... if I have to choose then give me the faster food

In this case me too!

We traveled a lot when I was a kid, and spent quite a bit of time on the French Mediterranean coast... where "escargot" was often on the menu. Even at age 7-8, I thought they were rather wonderful... especially when swimming in melted garlic butter. So yum, for me.

But as you pointed out, it's probably about "what you grew up with."

And if you think about it, things like oysters and clams are basically "snails of the sea."

Actually I enjoyed the snails when I tried them as a boy. What caught me by surprise here was a shop dedicated solely to Snails. I won't be at Steemfest, did you give any thought to going? How do you like the rebranding?

My wife and I had hopes of going-- and we even could have funded it with accumulated SP, but when we had the flood at our store pretty much anything else got shelved. So maybe next year.

I like the rebranding OK. Looks a little more modern; a little more "web 2017." Mostly I am glad to see the site running fairly smoothly again.

The rebranding has really grown on me but green is my favourite color! Yes, I agree, a working site is the main thing. Have you seen the others languages under settings?

Avoid fast food...it harmful for our health..
Article is so good.

Thanks!

I have has sea snails and I can't say I would go out of my way to have it again. I found it on the tough and chewy side...

At least you gave it a go!

Snaills are delicious @kus-knee
Sautee them in garlic, onion, ginger and then put some coconut cream. Oh wow. Then top it in some steaming rice, Oh la la.

Sounds like you know how to cook!

Know?
I love to cook, only now I can't because of my disability. T-T
But snails if done properly are nice to eat ;) @kus-knee

Thanks for the gif!

OMG, no.
No, no, no. Not my taste.

Maybe it tastes like chicken!

I can not imagine this and I will not try. But, thank you for the nice try. ;-)

I'd eat snails. My guess is that I would like the plain ones best, and the spicy ones the least. It's hard to say what the most unusual thing I've eaten would be. I ate my first Aminita muscaria this week, and that was a test of trusting science and traditional knowledge more than superstition and mass fear. Here in the US, they are a very feared mushroom.

Hmm intersting, I know that you're an expert on wild edibles and that's a great skill to have. Why are those mushrooms feared?

They have some potent toxins in them. Although the A. muscaria have been used as intoxicants for ages, they got listed in many books as deadly. And the US is generally a fungo-phobic. So many people are afraid to even touch these mushrooms. But they are unmistakable and it's easy to process the toxins out. So they could be a reliable harvest for many folks.

Anyway, I thought more about your question. And I think I've figured out the most unusual thing I've sampled. I was on the University of Arizona campus when the Hydrology Department's Snow and Ice Lab cleaned out their collection of Greenland ice cores. They dumped years worth of old ice cores, collected for research, out in front of their building. Some parts of those cores came from incredibly deep in the Greenland icecap, with some of the ice being over 100,000 years old.

I raced to get some garbage bags and loaded up two big bags of ice cores -- and then got on a city bus to my house, dripping a little bit of melt all along the way. I put those ice cores in my freezer and used them for mixed drinks for months. That ice was incredibly pure and dense -- as measured in the lab, no less. It was great! And it was probably the most expensive thing I'll ever consume, too, although it didn't cost me anything. I always thought they should have made snow cones and sold them, for great science outreach, rather than just dump them on the ground to melt.

Wow what a story! This comment is most certainly worthy of an article!

The town named "Bra", huh? Really interesting :)

I have never eaten this "slow" food in my life. But from your "ughhhh" I have lost interest on this slow food.

Looks like really enjoying your time at Bra, Italy!

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Yes we had a blast in Bra!

I am not pretty much used to it ,so MMMMmmm is not on the list ;)

Understandable!

Slow food good for health , always eat slow food 😊

Correct!

Very beautiful! Thanks for sharing

Thanks!

Good theme article , slow food , I like it

Thanks a lot @pardeepkumar

haha looks cool slow food :D

Thanks!

very tasty and beneficial for the health of the body,

Really! I didn't think about that!

Very interesting post. I am not into fast food but, as far as I am concerned, all meat is slow as it must be dead before cooked unless it happens to be lobster. At any rate, I love escargot and would be interested in trying some of the sauces.

Hey wow! Courageous and adventurous!

Nice food photo calculation
Have a nice day @kus-knee
