in travel •  6 years ago

Just outside of Eagle Nest, New Mexico, about 30 miles east of Taos, sits Eagle Nest Lake State Park. With an elevation of 8,300 feet, this alpine lake is surrounded by Wheeler Peak, the state's highest mountain, and other picturesque glacial slopes of the Moreno Valley. The Park can be reached along the beautiful Enchanted Circle Parkway that loops around Taos and over the famous Taos Gorge.

The reservoir was formed from the impounding of the Cimarron River in 1918 by the Eagle Nest Dam. It has remained a popular spot for recreation, with summer visitors making good use of ample boating and fishing opportunities, while winter brings snowmobilers and ice-fisherman to the lake.

A variety of fish are kept stocked in the lake, including 3 trout species, smallmouth bass, and kokanee salmon. The waters are also home to perch, catfish, sunfish , carp and pike. Elk, deer bear and turkeys make their homes in the surrounding pine-covered slopes.
