Steyning Architecture

Steyning is a pretty Sussex town that has a bit of something for everyone - an interesting high street, historic buildings, good shops and lovely countryside nearby.

It has retained a lot of its charm because its economic development was literally left high and dry when the River Adur silted up. Steyning had been a big trading power in the early middle ages as a river port for the downland wool trade.

However, over time the river Adur silted up, the Black Death arrived and competition from other ports increased and Steyning lost it's economic edge.

The result is that Steyning is now pretty well preserved. There are still plenty of old buildings there including Tudor style half timbered houses and some smart Georgian town houses too.

Here is a detail from one such building. At one point this window must have been an outside one but it is now in an internal sort of courtyard.

@gillianpearce, great story, interesting photos, I like the one on which the clock tower :)

Thank you @madlenfox. I like the one with the clock tower too. I didn't put that one first though because the tower had appeared in a previous post of more of the street. 😁

I would expect more timber on a "full-timbered house"? :)

Good point @tobixen. A full-timbered house would probably be a log cabin. 😂

I was just trying to make the contrast with the half-timbered houses. I bet there is a name for houses like the one in the photograph though.

Steemit has a habit of showing up my gaps in knowledge! 😁

I also know nothing about this kind of buildings, would like to learn more. This is not something you would find in Norway ... though I did indeed see a house built from a mix of bricks and wooden beams in Larvik (relatively far down in the post, search for "This kind of construction")

That's an interesting construction in Larvik because, I was going to say, "the bricks would suggest it is relatively modern".

However, after a bit of research, I discovered that fired bricks have been used in Northern Europe since Roman times.

So, now, I'm none the wiser about the whole thing. 😂

Very pretty @gillianpearce! I love "old world" like this :)

Thank you @lynncoyle1. There's plenty of "old world" around these parts. 😁
