Saturday Smoothie--Cherry, Pear & Cacoa

in veganuarycontest •  7 years ago

Happy Saturday everyone!  I always like a little alliteration, so I sharing a smoothie on a Saturday morning just seemed right in my mind. ;)

I don't always do smoothies for breakfast because a lot of the time I really want something hearty to start out my day.  I usually work and/or workout myself early in the day and I feel like I get more out of both when I am well-fueled.  In the winter season I especially feel better with a warm breakfast to get my day started.  When the weather warms up for summer I may occasionally enjoy a jam-packed smoothie first thing, then move on to a more solid breakfast later on.

That being said, I still do make a smoothie most days for a snack.  They really can be a great way to get some extra nutrients into your daily meal plan.  If you don't eat a lot of greens, you can sneak a handful or two in a smoothie without being able to tell.  Although it baffles me to think people don't like fruit, a smoothie can also be a way to bump up your fruit and veggie servings.  I like to add in things like ground flax, amla powder and cacoa for the omega 3's, antioxidants and other nutrients that can boost health.  Vegetables like pureed pumpkin and other slightly sweet squash are a great addition that bumps up your beta-carotene without hindering the taste.  I also happily toss in broccoli, cauliflower, beets, celery and other vegetables.  You just have to be careful how much you put in to start or you may find certain things a little too earthy if you are expecting something sweet and smooth. ;)

Smoothies can also be a great way to use up some slightly wilted produce so you don't have to throw it out and waste food.  I think my favorite find at the grocery store was when I got two huge bunches of overripe bananas for one dollar!  To give you a comparison, right now bananas are about $.69 per pound normally, so it was a huge discount since I ended up with probably 15 pounds from that haul.  Those got peeled and stuck in the freezer for use in smoothies or other recipes later on.  You don't have to buy fancy expensive smoothie packs, just find some combinations you like out of foods you keep on hand anyway.

Smoothies can be used in a healthy diet geared toward weight loss and detoxification if you keep them with a higher percentage of greens and other vegetables, or you can pack them with lots of fruit, nuts, avocado or even beans and tofu if you are trying to gain weight.  For me, I have times where I may have quite a few clients back-to-back where I cannot sit down for a full meal, so a smoothie is something I can sip on while I train to make sure I am not starving while I am training.  As I've said before, nobody wants a hungry (or hangry) trainer. ;)  I also found when I first switched to a plant-based diet it was hard to get enough calories in to support my frame and lifestyle.  Using smoothies can be a great option to keep a vegan athlete fueled!

Enough talk, here's a yummy concoction I made this week.  I love my pear and beet combo, but pears with cherries and cacoa are also quite delightful in my opinion. ;)

Sweet Cherry, Pear & Cacoa Smoothie

Makes 2 servings

  • 1 red pear, core & seeds scooped out
  • 1 cup frozen sweet cherries
  • 1 ripe banana, peeled
  • 2 cups baby spinach
  • 1 cup chopped beet greens (or more spinach)
  • 2 tablespoons ground flax seed
  • 2 tablespoons raw cacoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon amla powder
  • 3 cups water or plant milk of choice

Toss everything in the blender and mix until smooth!

Great recipe.Sure will try in summers.

Glad you like it!

Just the kind of breakfast I like. Nice combo of the pear and beets.

Thank you Amy! You always post such delicious smoothies that make my mouth water!

I love smoothies :) My go to smoothie is a peanutbutter, strawberry & banana smoothie that was in my bootcamp schedual from Jon Venus.
This recipe look great though. Should try it sometime :)

That's a yummy combo too! I love anything with peanut butter. 😋

Yeah I didn't really like peanutbutter Before but now I like it in smoothies and I love B&J peanutbutter cookie ice-cream :)

Peanut butter is totally my desert island food! 🤣

:D Not sure I have one of those. Might be my smoothie :D

Great sounding
I do enjoy smoothies and may have to try this one

Thanks! You can play around with the cacao if you want it more chocolate-y. ;) Cherry and chocolate is always a yummy combo.

ok thanks

Mmmmm Cherries, I actually picked up a punnet of fresh cherries today while shopping. I think I might eat them all tonight though!

This looks lovely though, I dont have any red pears or amla powder though, could you recommend a sub?

Other than that great post as per usual.

Ooh I bet the fresh cherries are delicious! You could totally substitute a different ripe juicy pear. The amla is more for the nutrition than the taste, so you could easily omit it. :)

Cool, I'm going to have to suss out this amla powder, I've never heard of it before.

Thanks again.

Dr. Greger from nutritionfacts.org recommends it. It is the powdered form of dried Indian gooseberries. I bought mine on Amazon. 😃

Cool, thanks I must check it out. Dr Greger is the 👨.

So you put the greens from the beets in? The stems? I have done that with juice but not smoothies. Also, just looked up amla powder. I never even knew what amla is, looks like a source for iron so I may be checking it out. Thanks for the tips!

This time I just froze the leafy greens from the beets. If I blend them up to make green ice cubes then I'll toss in the stems, too. Amla is supposed to be great for your immune system, too!

Sounds absolutely divine! I didn't realize I was drooling while reading this :-) I need to invest in a juicing machine..

(When I was younger and lived with my aunt, I always got smack in the face because I hated chewing and held food in my mouth for a long time, like a cow..Still hate it, but got better now, lol..)

I would love to upgrade our blender, but our Ninja works pretty well still for smoothies. 😀 I take it as a high compliment if I got you drooling! And you gave me a good chuckle with the cow comment! 🐄

Some great advice in the @plantstoplanks. A lot of people tend to go for very sweet all-fruit like orange, banana, mango, etc but balanced with greens, seeds, veggies, whatever, makes them suuuuuuper nutritious and scrumptious too once you've played around with flavours. That's a good point you made about expecting sweet and getting earthy, but I think if people experiment and find a good balance of things they like, then you never look back!

Excellent comment my friend! The worst are the ones that people buy in stores thinking they're being healthy and they're loaded with added sugar! As if beautifully ripe fruit isn't sweet enough.

I think smoothies are like any other food when you are transitioning to a healthier diet. After you start adding more veggies and other good stuff a little at a time you will most definitely adjust to the less sweet ones. Now I don't like it if they're too sweet! 😋

Yummy! This looks delicious my dear friend! Congratulations

Thank you dear! 🤗

Oh I love smoothies and your recipe sounds so healthy and filed with nutrients! I have to start making smoothies more often!!;)

Glad you like it! I definitely do them more when the weather warms up a bit as it is a great way to pack in the good stuff! :)

Super delicious and highly nutritious 💚😊💚
