[Vlog] Why I'm bullish on Steemit Communities for 2018 & models for monetisation

in vlog •  7 years ago

So I thought I'd knock up a quick video before heading off to my second 'Fighting with Marv' session.

In today's video I talk off-the-cuff about Steem/ Steemit Communites:

I cover

  • why I'm bullish on Communities
  • how I see Communities potentially working (based on what I've read and heard)
  • how Communities will improve the user experience on Steemit
  • how Communities can be monetised
  • how Community moderators will need to strike the right balance between censorship and openness, between charging commissions and enticing contributions, between accepting ads and putting off subscribers in order to be successful
  • how Steem Communities could bring new capital into the Steem eco-system
  • how Communities and SMTs are different sides of the same coin. I contrast the organic Communities model to value building on the Steem blockchain to the SMT model. It will be fun to see how the different approaches fare.

Communities, waiting for them. The way they could work and become monetised sounds like I would see them and know them from other communities too where I have been running and moderating some of them.

Question, where did you get the details from or where did you read about how it could work? I would be highly interested how it really will be organised and rolled-out.

Let us all hope it will be an open process instead of pre-selected community owners, I am simply speculating at the moment - also see them is very important for the future. (Upvoting my own comment hoping to get more details from others on COMMUNITY Roll Out - maybe @andrarchy @ned @acidyo @timcliff know more about that?

There is a good post from Timcliff on Communities recounting a conversation he had with Sneak:

https://steemit.com/steemfest/@timcliff/dinner-with-timcliff-and-sneak-at-steemfest-discussion-about-communities

My understanding from Andrarchy is that Communities should be ready soon.

I believe (through conversations I've had) there will be namespaces held in reserve, that will potentially be seen as having a Steemit Inc stamp of approval, when they are dished out to their moderators. However I don't think that matters too much as anyone can create a Community and people will gravitate to the best communities over time. Sometimes being seen as the 'anointed' Community, can be a handicap especially if another Community is delivering the goods in terms of quality and engagement.

Thanks!! :)

Thanks mate - sounds interesting the #hivemind "thing" - will re-read both pieces - @andrarchy comment and @timcliff post - a few times later, can't wait for these communities to come and ideally to handle a few. Curious to see what else Hivemind has to offer in terms of opportunities

the bad thing in steemit is that just people with a lot of steem power rule, I am on steemit almost 6 months and I don't see any support from whales, I have 250 steem power earned in this six months, I did a lot to grow but nothing help.

I understand that just big investors can earn from steemit or if they are supported by them.

Will someone support me, I think just couple upvotes make my posts famous and I will be always famous and earn at least a few dollars but not cents.

Well - i can not speak for yourself but if you need support try relationship building to people that share common interest but a sentence like your last one probably is not going to help a lot.......

I was trying to build relations believe me, I even made giveaway and contests and I never usually ask for upvotes, it's my first time because I am tired, I also tried to moderate and still moderate my group with 18000 memebers and made it just for steemit, for people to resteem to be resteemed, I gave a lot of tips, I share all the good that I can but nothing is working because I don't want to invest in steem because I see that the price is going always down in bitcoin and I don't want to lose my btc.

here is my group by the way : https://www.facebook.com/groups/clixmoney/

I also advertise steemit everywhere, always share my posts on : reddit, twitter, facebook, google plus, linkedin and in steemit chat + discordapp

It seems that the idea resteem to be resteemed is not interesting or maybe I just didn't find the right people.

What dp you think now ?

Hmmm, am not a fan of anything like resteem for resteem or similar. Resteeming is currently not a thing I consider as bringing you more votes or following, maybe the 18k people in your group are the wrong ones. What you say you did for steemians sounds good to me so I am confused you have not more support

I think the fact that I have almost 1800 followers is already something, where I can find that support ? any idea ?

Thumbs up Great Vlog, Communities, I can't wait to see what comes from it all, though I firmly believe that people should start (Pre) building communities and establishing their presence and what it is they want to do before the function comes out and as you said SMT's and Communities go hand in hand. Either way it will be a awesome time figuring it all out and it gives more resources to new users/existing users. I know that when the function drops I will be using it for the Vloggers Guild I'm creating. Thanks for the talk and discussion, looking forward to the next one. sighs Flags.. Such a messy topic at times. Have a good day. nods

I agree people should start building now. The principles are the same now or when Communities/ SMTs arrive. I.e. can you engage and on-board people and build a "Community"?

The functionality is a tool to make it easier all round but the basic building blocks are here now and will only add to credibility of 'influencers' claiming to be able to build succesful Communities/ SMTs in the future.

Exactly, most people think they need the 'Communities' function in order to form a Community when in reality all it takes is true social interaction and a want to see something grow in a organic direction. At any rate, I believe one of the successful ways to build a community is the merging of 2 distinct groups. People with large SP( aka whales ) whom want to see certain communities grow and are willing to delegate,upvote/resteem & People with low SP, but great work ethic and a good resume ( via their post which act as a body of work ).
Communities will work best if we can get rid of this Whale/Minnow complex and start seeing users for their body of work and value.

The common bond between both users is there. Its Social Standings & Economic Class Status that divide us.

Sorry for that rant! Anyway here is to hoping that both sides of the same coin finally realize they are both valuable.

P.S. I just found out a few days ago that 'influencers' is a real thing on the chain. How naive of me. lol

Good spot, like that opinion a lot and agree :-).

It is unfair that the great harlot takes everything

Good idea to build now - we all should build the future on Steemit now :-). The only thing I am not sure yet if we need to build something around a certain special named account we own for a community or around certain tags we might have created. Hope soon we know more, thanks guys!

I think tags would be better, that way the community could post freely w/o having to worry about it going through the main account, but maybe have 1 main account that reps the whole community and resteems/upvotes content that comes from them.

I think building around tags (for now) and reserving an account with that name might be a good way to go. When Communities arrive you can advise people to post to the Community instead of using the tag.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Makes sense - I had a thought on that some months ago and checked available account names and realized for most of the communities I had in mind accounts are already in place / booked. Building around the tag for now is best solution I think for the community. Thanks again guys.

The theory for monetization is that the more connections you can create between nodes (people), and the larger the user base, the more wealth gets created. This according to Metcalfe's law.

The current problem I think with Steem is that it is just too small and not diverse enough. It is not diverse in social norms, or morals, or ways of thinking. I have seen people get censored for having the wrong views.

If communities are going to work then we cannot have whales from outside the community censoring post from within the community. If people within a certain community have controversial views which are fringe then this should be respected unless something clearly illegal is taking place.

I have my doubts that the moderators and the whales will allow communities to be independent.

Thanks just getting my head around this and so this is useful! So many videos on Youtube about how to get going! Suppose I just need to blog! Will enjoy the communities when they get going, but for now just going to build my blogs...

I am praying that my steem investment turns around eventually. I turned 1 bitcoin in to .25 of a bitcoin in 4 or 5 months here. There is a disconnect between investors and content creators here. Without actually investors content creators wont make crap.

Great explanation and video.

Maybe someone can enlighten me here, as I am fairly new to steemit.

I don't see communities as a good thing at all. With a platform that is a cross between instagram and reddit, only two things will come of it.
1: Communities will just turn into "feature" pages similar to instagram. People spamming the tag in hopes they get featured, in order to gain more followers themselves. Leaving 1 or 2 people in charge of who actually gets to see content. That doesn't sound like the community based platform everyone hopes steemit will be.
2: They become like "subreddits," in "photography" will be a community, controlled by a couple mods, who decide what gets to be posted about photography, and what rules apply to those post. All I see is a group of people being able to take a certain "theme/sub" hostage. Just like reddit; "oh sorry, no blogspam," "oh sorry, no watermark," "oh sorry, I am a mod and I don't like your post for whatever reason." Affectively shutting people out of being able to get more eyes on their own content.
Let's be honest here. The whole purpose of this platform is to "blog" or create original content about certain topics, and being rewarded for doing so. Not specific people decided what get's to be posted, and what type of content should seen. That or, a battle of who gets the dominate community first, shutting others out, and then gaining ultimate power because of it.
If people are complaining about whales abusing their power now, wait till people become in charge of communities. Wait till those communities start to "sell-out," wait for the content to be on lock-down because of issues I already stated above.
I mean, hopefully these things don't happen, and again maybe my understanding is lacking, but....

Edit: I voted my comment so it might have a better chance of being answered or discussed. Thanks.

I still don't get why Steem is not $5.00, do other Social Media platforms pay you to post and are as user friendly? ridicules. Good post, upped and following.

Bitcoin 8100 Bulls leading the charge...

Your thoughts are wrong its will not happen here lol

Well done, thanks for the information!

Thinking this currency has the potential to go to $5 - $10, only probelm I see is that I have heard the Steem supply double every two years or so? (Correct me if I am wrong), however, I suppose as the user base increase that issue is kind of eliminated, but I still think it keeps the price to stable. The circulation can often remove the volatility.

nope, your information is outdated

After hardfork 16 inflation has been set to 9.5%pa decreasing by 0.5%pa until it reaches something like 5%. I think your information is outdated.

This is terrible. 2x every 2 year. Bad news after bad news

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

it's also wrong information. By the way, it's not "news" if it's not "new"... inflation rate of steem has always been public. At some point it was very high, but that is not the case anymore.

I have been hearing about the communities for a while now. I am very excited about it as it will really help bloggers find their niche audience. I love that idea as it is difficult to filter anything at the moment. Great video, I enjoyed your thoughts quite a lot. You touched on ways the communitites will help in ways I did not realise...

Good post, only what I don't get is the word "Communities" - I thought Steemit itself was one whole community, no matter how difficult it is sometimes. Are you just speaking to those "in the know"?? I'd like to hear please. Happy Steeming!

Communities will be to Steemit what Subreddits are to Reddit. It's just a label for sub-sections.

I know nothing! OK got it. Seems like it will bring a little more order to the whole community. Currently no matter how wonderful the thought of it is, too many posting all in almost one go, don't make for any kind of order. If the communities are broad based enough, yet also specific to their category, it would probably work better and be less confusing to newcomers. Keep up the good work. Happy Steeming!

Steem is actually a quite interesting social experiment in how a "real world" Steem environment would play out without a ruling body/government. Alliances would form, those with power would wield their strength against scammers/abusers of the environment, some people would keep to themselves and not get involved at all, others would pretend to care about the environment but do nothing about it, a ruling body may/would/will form. . .Steemit truly is a reflection of how things could play out in a decentralized world. . .I have noticed all this in my short time here as there seems to be mini wars happening(which I agree with as many are standing up against community/reward pool abuse).

I think ; steemit make a like button about votes and comment .

Communities won't be around until 2019? Did I hear that correctly?

I think they have the potential to really be beneficial too, but is the ETA really that far away?

Communities have indeed a huge potential and I also can't wait until they are rolled out. The cleaner community is a great example on how abuse can be fought more effectively.

great video post

😍A very informative post. Great job. Keep it up! 😍

Nice post gam panyoet

Good job.....😊👍

Very god job

Thanks for the update and 411 on the communities. I was not aware of much that you mentioned although I had heard about them. It is exciting to see the newer changes as they come about. I am also looking forward to the "community" aspect of this site...thus far, it seem to hodge podge with the landing page being the trending posts.

steemit is dead

Interesting....)

Nice. But I'm confused about it.

Nice one. Thanks a lot.

Nice.....

good job love it !!

Glad you are thinking of this. I love Steemit, but I feel like so few of the people (AI?) who comment on posts have actually read them. Communities seem cool, looking forward to learning more. Any ways we can make this experiment work, I am all for!

videos that can give appreciation to all who watch it, good work

Nice vidio

thanks for your better information

Sympa ce post .... Ca a de l'avenir c'est sûr !

Sounds similar to google plus!

Thanks for providing some insight on the concept concerning the formation communities and their various purposes and possible benefits. It will be very interesting to see how this concept develops over time and whether Steemit becomes a more attractive and robust platform as a result.

ha a so nice @abdulsalim

good video with nice posted great work !! upvoter!!

Spamming comments is frowned upon by the community.

Comment spam is currently defined by @steemcleaners as:

  • 10 or more generic comments per day that are not in response to a question posed by the post or comment. “Thanks”, “Great Post!”, “Nice”, “Follow me”, etc.

  • Commenting on old posts to hide self up-votes or a voting trail.

  • Copy/Paste comments that serve no purpose or the purpose is self promotion.

  • Comments that inform the contributor that they have been up upvoted, resteemed, or flagged when the curator does not actually upvote, resteem, or flag the post.

  • Unsolicited and off topic referral links.

Continued comment spamming may result in action from the cheetah bot.
