Rock Dassie (Procavia capensis) in Capharnaum
We love the wildlife of Africa and were thrilled to find these Rock Dassies (Cape Hyrax) on the rocky shore of Capharnaum.
They are found from Cape Town in South Africa to the Middle East in suitable habitat.
We were unaware that they are actually found in Israel until we saw them and could easily identify them from seeing then in many places in Southern Africa. There were other people who saw them and thought that they were rats!
They are not Rodents but belong to a Order - Hyracoidea.- which is more closely related to Elephants than Rodents.
