Improve your Writing (Confused Words)

in writing •  7 years ago

It all is a lot clearer now, ironic right? Confused words are often used and this is because it sounds right, but it is not. These words sound so similar, this is where the problem comes in.

Homophones

This is the biggest cause for all the confusing words one can read in someones writing. Why English decided to do this... well if you ask me they just wanted to be difficult. If the English language just decided to be simple and not so confusing, this would all be gone and we would never have to worry about it.

If you ask me English causes a lot of stress and unnecessary worry. It is making me old and grey with all it's rules and exceptions, and extra exceptions to the exceptions.

Accept/Except
Accept:Is a verb, this means that someone or something is doing the accepting.

I accept you for being who you are.
I do not accept your laziness.

Except: Is a word that functions like "excluding".

I love ice-cream, except when it is melted.
Most days are sunny during winter except when there is a cold front.

Affect/Effect
This is one I often get wrong. A way that I have learnt how to tell the difference, is the A. The A represents action.

Affect: Is a verb, where something or someone is affecting something else.
That story affected me more than the others.

Effect: is usually a noun.
That story had an effect on my life.

See how the had is now the verb and effect is a noun.

Its/It’s
Its: is possessive.
The clown lost its red nose.

It's: is a contraction of "it is".
It's going to be a rainy day today.

We always think that the apostrophe shows possession "Tim's car", but its is similar to the words his and her, therefore its is possession. With "It's" just break it up into it is

Loose/Lose
Another one I struggle with. Whenever you need to use loose/lose in the context of, you lost something, just replace the t with an e to get the right one.

Loose: is not tight, but loose.
The door was loose.

Lose: in the past tense is lost.
You will lose this game if you keep playing like this.

To/Too
Too: indicates, excess or means also.
I too want to got to the movie
It is way too much food for me to eat

To: must be used in all other circumstances.

Weather/Whether
When it comes to this one just think of water, there is no h in water, therefore weather relates to the conditions around us.
The weather is looking bad today, we will get rain.

Whether: is proceeded by an opinion
Weather or not it rains, I will be happy.

There are many many more of these words. To have a look at more and do some short exercises go to:Link

Just on a little side note for self improvement. I will be doing pushups, situps and squats for the amount of $$$ (ratio;$1:1) I earn on this post and will give a short feedback every day at the end of each post. This will be split in equally between all 3. Any not done will carry onto the next day.

Hey @dragonslayer109... Your post is a good read. ✍️👍 I personally do not face any difficulty with these homophonic words, since English has been my first language. The country I come from, which is India for everyone's reference, has the biggest English speaking population.
And as a matter of fact many people of my generation or the generation next to me aren't proficient enough in there own mother tongue as all they know is English. Sometimes, this even poses a threat to our culture and history but who cares as anything & everything done in the name of mordanization is acceptable... Right??!

Culture should never be lost no matter what

Absolutely..! ☺️

This sounds so similar to what is happening to me in my own country. Colonised by the British, so everyone, young and old speak a little of English.

Recently lost a bet to a friend, the challenge you may ask, is to speak our dialect without a word of English. I lost in the second sentence! 😂

i think when we are talking in english we dont have any problem with that word, because we can change with other simple word, but when we try to write, we found that problem especially for people who are not using english as first languange.

Yes very true, I struggle with some of the words as English is my second language.

Nice article, English word has done many of us strong thing. You did a nice work, the topic is inexhaustible. Weldon.

Let's not forget the most irritating homophonic rape of language: you're - your.

And what about "there, their and they're"?

Oh boy, don't get me started on those.

Voted up and Resteemed. Cheers.

In Friend we call this "faux amis". "Fake friends". Thank you for these tips

English, although may seem simple, is really unnecessarily complex.
I think I know the differences but I'll have a look over to see if there are any misconceptions I have.
Thanks Dragonslayer and goo luck with the workout

Yes English is way too complex in my opinion

peak/pique
cease/seize
to/too
...

Great Writing

I c what your sayin dawg.

Language is humanity's gift to ourselves and for each other. I want to live in a world where the way words weave continues to enhance civilisation. If it cannot always be inspired and exciting; surely we desire it liberated and infinitely creative. Texts created without keywords mustn't become digital refugees.

Woo ur post is like a mini English learning book in 30 days 😊

english really has a lot of those funny examples :D
I think everyone ones in his life thought about confusing wordpairs he found in his lessonbook.
Thanks a lot for collecting together some of them :)

And the quote "A professional writer is an amateur who didn´t quit!"
is such a motivating one for many of us here on steemit!!

Glad you liked it, keep writing is key.

This is a great reminder, I always get accept wrong too LOL Except when I think about it!

Helpful

I like that quote though. We all have more room to improve although confusion can happen as spelling and pronunciation are quite similar for some words.

If you ask me there are way to many rules :)

I don't think about following the rules haha

Giving yourself time to learn the english language can help alleviate most of these mistakes. Reading widely also helps improve one's vocabulary and improves writing. Thanks for sharing

Yes, reading does help a lot.

thanks for your interesting post.
keep continue posting

Nice Article @dragonslayer.... votedup

This is one of the best posts I have read today on Steem. A lot of people get confused and often avoid using such confusing words.

Thank you for helping us.

If you can avoid them then why not. No use using a word that you end up using wrong :)

Yep.

Very informative for me as a non-native english speaker!!

Nice tips. Check your examples for whether and weather.

"Whether: is proceeded by an opinion
Weather or not it rains, I will be happy."

Should be "whether" but hey these are all very confusing..

My struggle most of the is the Its and It's.

More room for improvement for sure! ٩ʕ•͡וʔ۶

Like very much the verse at the end : "a professional writer is an amateur that didn't quit" one of my Favorite books is "how to write books", in fact is a guide of grammar and common mistakes when you are writing english. Thank you for posting.
