CERVICAL RECTIFICATION. How to place the head in inverted postures with this ailment.
CERVICAL RECTIFICATION is a change in the curvature of our neck, the cervical vertebrae have a natural curvature (lordosis) designed to
support the weight of the skull, and maintain the stability of this on
the shoulders, the vertebrae also cushion the different movements of
the head.
To work in yoga with CERVICAL RECTIFICATION it is essential that a
teacher help us and explain how to place the head in the different
asanas. In the postures of legs the head must maintain a position reminiscent
of the neck its old curvature, supports will be needed for the head to
rest in many of these positions, also in trunk flexions the head
should rest. Avoid twisting the neck.

Personally, I have Cervical rectification. I have discovered 20 years ago and it was my critical point for many years. That ailment made my daily life difficult, during my years as a computer professional where I spent many hours working in front of the computer and adding an incorrect posture made that pain unbearable, affecting my life in every way.
Until one day, already attended by sessions of kinesiology and physiotherapy, without concrete results to end my ailment, I decided to take seriously in the matter.
So, I went to a Yoga Studio, and I signed up to take classes twice a week and never quit.
At the beginning I remember that I could not do any inverted asana, the pain in my neck was sharp and the instructor told me to be patient and that I did not do it then, I could raise my legs supporting them on the wall keeping my torso horizontal to the floor resting my neck.
After 3 months of practice with a lot of care and attention from me and the teacher about my neck, I started doing Viparita Karani asana. In the photo below, taken in my Yoga Studio, you can see three levels of Viparita Karina, the first one is near Sarvangasana.
When you have CERVICAL RECTIFICATION you often suffer tension and contractures in the neck, headache and sometimes pain in the dorsal area, also over time the mobility of the vertebrae is lost. The causes of this rectified curvature can be: congenital, caused by bad posture or accidents among others.
In the postures of legs the head must maintain a position reminiscent of the neck its old curvature, supports will be needed for the head to rest in many of these positions, also in trunk flexions the head should rest. Avoid twisting the neck.
For investment positions we should know that it is not that they can not be practiced, the problem is how we are going to practice them. We must learn to place the neck and use the supports that will help us hold the posture.
It is important to know how to use the supports in the inverted positions. Each human being has differences in the neck and the head, even with the same diagnosed pathology the supports can suffer variations.
Let's start commenting SIRSASANA, the head in sirsasana should be placed so that cervical arc is generated, but WE MUST KNOW HOW TO PLACE IT, otherwise we could injure ourselves, the shoulders, arms and back should be strong and be correctly placed otherwise the weight of the body would fall on the neck hurting it. The hands must hold strongly to the head to avoid further rectification of the neck. An alternative is to work sirsasana on ropes or chair, you can also try another investment position more rested, that does not need as much force, as Viparita Karani.
The Sarvangasana and the Halasana must also be adjusted, the support should be adequate on the shoulders and neck, the neck should feel that it rests and cervical curvature should be created, an alternative is Sarvangasana in saddle and Ardha Halasana using a high support for neck and shoulders, in case someone can not practice replacing them by Setu Bandha Sarvangasana in bench or with high support for the entire back from the back to the buttocks.
See my video playing Yoga with this postures.
Remember, you can use the wall to perform these asanas, you take out weight using these alternatives.
I recommend to the students who present CERVICAL RECTIFICATION that they should attend the class with a certified teacher that tells them how to place their necks well, not only in the investment positions but also in any other asana.
