Building Better Habits {Actifit}

in actifit •  6 years ago

Hey guys! It's been a week since my last @actifit post, so it was about time to log some steps again. Luckily the sun came out today so I could actually get a run in! I know many of you suck it up and run in all conditions, but I hide indoors most often when it gets really nasty.

In addition to logging some miles today, I'm also happy to report I'm pumped to be working on a new healthy morning routine. My pal @byebyehamburgers is really good about setting goals and making checklists, so I'm trying to make more of a habit of doing that myself. Today was the third day recently that I started out the day making a list of things I wanted to get done today. I know, a lot of you folks probably already do this on a daily basis. I totally understand the power of writing things down, but somehow have neglected to realize how much of an impact it has on my daily routine.

I have 100% improved my productivity levels the days I have done this. I don't think of myself as a procrastinator, but I do need focus and goals so I don't waste my day away. It also feels really great to see all of those check marks at the end of the day!

Having a run on my list definitely pushed me to make sure I got out and did it. Nothing too fancy today, just a solid 4-miler. It does seem to take me quite a while to warm up and get in my groove anymore, but it always feels good when I finish. 😉

I will definitely start nailing down my running goals for 2019 so I can not only "just run" but also have a specific goal for each run. I know @run.vince.run and @toofasteddie have written some great stuff on their own blogs and for @runningproject related to the importance of a training plan. Not that I can't just go out and enjoy the miles as is, but it's time to get back to having a fun goal to work towards!

Another great day on the books, so I hope it was good for you all, as well! Anyone else have some solid morning routines to make sure you make the most out of each day?

Running is the best way to stay fit. I have been away from physical activity...but slowly when i started to worry about my health...first thing i did was running and slowly from few meter to many kilometer...it ia going pretty well

Running definitely hits a number of buttons for me. Besides being a great physical activity, it really is such a good stress release. Nothing beats getting outdoors soaking in a little nature while you get your exercise in!

That's ..true...soaking in sweat helps to remain active throughout the day. I still loves to take 5-6 km per day

Man you 10k @actifit ers are inspirational. I feel so embarrassed in the week posting my low totals and then missing posting them on busy weekends because I get busy!

Like you, I think I have to set some goals and work it into a pattern.

Nice work!

Haha, well I only post once or twice a week with @actifit, so I try to make it count when I do. Some of those folks get up over the 20,000 mark on a regular basis! Even as active as I am that is a challenge. :)

It's always nice to have a little motivation to continuing working harder!

The day has only 23 hours and not 24, do you know why? Because one hour is booked always for running.

Great to read the checklists are working out for you Katie !
I added another layer to mine recently after noticing I started to slack and procrastinate on some of them finding some excuses each time. Each day I fail on certain goals, I promise to give the post rewards of that day away. So far (2 days in) it has been extremely effective :)

You are doing awesome, Keep it up!

Always ways to continue to improve and move forward, right? The donating of the post rewards is a great motivator and just nice to give back sometimes, anyway. :)

I'm going to try to make just the list a habit, and then expand on it once it is a daily occurrence. I'd love to get to the point where I can actually assign times to each task so I can see where I can fit even more in. I think part of my problem is that I have been slower at work lately. When I'm busier I just squeeze what I need to do in when I have breaks, but if I have most of the day free it is really easy to kick back and cruise through. Thanks for sharing your journey because it is definitely helping motivate me to do better!

Thanks Katie, I'm also getting a lot of motivation from you and others here on Steemit. More than anything, the community makes it the perfect place to go about making some progress in life. I have to watch out not to get overly caught up in it though, I guess we all do :)

All about that balance, right? I do need to add that to the list soon--getting better at setting specific time limits when I log on. I enjoy the community so much it is hard sometimes not to want to get on every so often throughout the day to check in, but I think it is a more productive life practice to have set times to touch base. :)

I sure really need to get back on my list... Have been neglecting it for a while.
Thanks for reminding me 😊

Happy to put it out there! It's easy to fall out of the habit once you have a routine down, but I think it really is a great practice when you feel like you could be getting more out of each day.

Hey @plantstoplanks

Nice step count. Having goals is definitely a good idea and something that I just don't do enough of.

Keep up the good work.

Gaz

Thanks Gaz! I enjoyed getting out and picking up some good steps on my run today. Especially after knocking out some of my daily goals before hand. I am one that if I physically write something down I am definitely more inclined to do it. Kind of like signing a contract with myself I suppose!

I makes total sense. I'll give it a go...........One day! 😉

Excellent advice. I am definitely a list maker, especially during stressful times.

Oh yes, I am totally with you on it helping to manage stress. Right now I'm using it more because I don't have enough to stress me out, haha! But I know I resort to it when I get overwhelmed with how much I need to get done, as well. Just knowing you really are getting at least one thing done at a time off your list is very rewarding in a multitude of ways!

Fitness, ugh.

I haven't been active since mustering out of the military over a decade ago. I realize its benefits and applaud you for your dedication. Keep it up your lifelong and you'll be healthier for it.

Haha, well I work in the fitness industry so I need to practice what I preach. There are definitely days where it feels like a chore, but I have never regretted a workout once it was done! I do tend to enjoy the process, but even more I know how I feel when I fall off the routine and that motivates me more than anything. I start getting grumpy when I haven't run for a while. ;)

I believe making a list keeping us in focus and the feeling of crossing out one item at a time is truly amazing. I feel accomplished even if I just got one thing done :-)

Absolutely. I didn't get everything on my list checked off today, but I got the important things done which for today was enough. :)

Running definitely does positive things to the mind and body. I do 3km every day at lunch time on my break. In a great mood then going back to work . #steemitbloggers

Ooh nice, that's a great lunch time habit! I teach a few corporate fitness classes at lunch time and everyone always really enjoys the active break in the middle of the day.

Very cool and I like your tree light!

Ahh, I didn't even think about it was #treetuesday! 🤣

really good about setting goals and making checklists

I find myself most productive when I make lists. It's gratifying to me to be able to check something off the list.

I can imagine with how much you do making things from scratch that lists are imperative to get it all done! There's definitely still plenty of days I wish I had a few more hours, but this is helping to hopefully make that less often. :)

Planning is the key.. I will jump back into lists.

It really is. I like physically writing things down because it seems to have more of an impact personally, but I'm sure there are tons of apps to help with the habit, too!

I think you are right.

Thanks @actifit!

A list is essential for me if I want to get ANYTHING accomplished in a day. Most days...I forget to make the list though. :-(

Haha, you need to put writing a list on your list? ;) I have heard some people who do it the night before, too. I can see how that is effective in that you already wake up the next day and have a plan in place. Perhaps I'll get there eventually, but I'm happy to just jot a few things down first thing when I wake up.

Got it... add make a list to the previous day's list. Genius!

Normally I don't give these actifit type posts the time of day but for you I will make an exception. The time is 10:33PM.
I don't blame you for not running in the foul weather, it just is something that wouldn't work for me either.

Well I'm honored with the exception. ;) I do try to put a little something into my actifit posts since I know most people don't give a hoot how many steps I've taken in a day. Luckily we usually don't get too many days of foul weather in a row here in Georgia, so I can usually squeeze in at least a run or two a week in the great outdoors. :)

I am in the same boat as you - I am productivity but feel like I haven't achieved things in a day and it seems I need these lists to keep my mind focused on what I need to do. Does seem chaotic at times.

Good to hear it's working out for you (pun intended ;) )

Haha, so many working out puns. They just never get old. ;)

Just got done making my list for today, so off I go to see what I can check off first...

Haha, gotta love them and they go from strength to strength BOOM! 😂

Nail that list, hope you get those things done!

I really need to get back to making lists... It really does help increase productivity :) <333 Great job btw @plantstoplants !

It's amazing that something so simple really makes such a difference! I've done it in the past, but forgot just how effective a few little notes can be to give you a kick in the pants to get things done. :)

Right! Same here...I had let myself get a little too distracted with life and it totally snowballed on me...but today I did make a short list and boom!! It was just the little boost I needed. Thank you again. You totally rock!!

Awesome! I was just happy to find how well it worked for me to start the habit again, but it makes me even happier knowing it has given a little boost to some other folks, too!

I am always impressed with those who can do the running. With my bad knees and poor joints I don't get to do the running. I will be standing by the way cheering you on.
Ren #steemitbloggers

My boyfriend is my perpetual cheerleader and paparazzi since he doesn't run either. I have to say it is nice sometimes to know you've got someone waiting for you at the finish line, so I'm always happy for the support! ;)

Well, I will be there at the finish line in spirit! Unless you get to Tulsa to run, then I will physically be there for ya!
Ren

I have not been to that part of the country yet, so maybe some day! :)

<3

I have noticed too that making a checklist of things help get most things done and in good time too. Often enough I forget to do the little things and my list will grow until I am overwhelmed. But hey we are human, we need to do what we got to do to make things work :)

I have definitely had a few days in the past where I seem to keep adding more to the list than I check off, but it generally all works out in the end. If nothing else, though, at least it can help me see what is most important so I can do that first. House work usually ends up falling to the bottom of the list...😜

Haha, ya it's at the bottom of the list for me too. There is always going to be something that needs to be cleaned. But hey if it's hiding in the closet for when you can get to it, then, it doesn't show XD

Keep running for me :D It is one of the activities I can't do anymore. Old knees and too many surgeries. Just don't beat yourself up over missing a goal. Keep at it.

I'm going to do my best to keep going as long as I can! Luckily I enjoy other forms of exercise to keep my fitness well balanced, so hopefully my knees will support me for many years to come. I try to keep a good head about my goals. It's always tough (like most things) to find the right balance between striving hard enough to actually reach some goals but then also being easy on myself if I don't always hit them. I'm feeling pretty good right now, so I will most certainly keep at it. Thanks for popping in. :)
