How Does Steemit Reputation Work? - Ultimate Guide

in basictraining •  7 years ago  (edited)

increase-blog2.jpg

Reputation scores are how people get to know where you are in regards to how trustworthy you are. And the level of respect people has for you. High reputation scores are perceived to have quality content. It also determines your privileges within the system. As you gain more reputation, the system learns to trust you. Reputation is an important factor to determine your success on Steemit. Here's how it work.

Bluertank.jpg

You Starts at Level 25

Grow-StartingPoint2t.jpg
Everybody when they first joined Steemit starts out with a reputation score of 25. It is up to the users to increase or decrease it. And Yes, you can also get a negative reputation.

How to Increase your reputation

Only-35-Percent-of-Companies-Think-Content-Marketing-Is-Truly-Successful_.jpg
The only ways to increase your reputation score is by upvotes you get on your content, posts, and comments.

  • Post high-quality content.
  • Post comments more frequently.
  • Build and increase the number of followers.
  • Take time to choose the right title.

Reputation depends only on your content

1116762-Kiana-Tom-Quote-Money-doesn-t-buy-class.jpg
Buying Steem or having a lot Steem Power does not increase reputation. Your reputation score will only depend on the number of upvotes you get from your posts on Steemit. Always post and comment with quality content so that you are going to get recognized and users will likely to upvote you.

You can get a Negative reputation

break-negative-f1.jpg
Downvotes or get flags from someone who has a high reputation can decrease your scores to zero or even to a negative. If you put out bad content. Your content could get flagged, meaning downvoted and that will cause your reputation to decrease. These are the things that might get you flagged like spamming posts, harassing, misleading tags and copyrighted material. You don't want this because all your posts would become hidden, and no one would able to see them.

There's Limitations of Downvote/Flags

noeffecr.jpg
We know upvotes increase reputation and flags decrease reputation score but there are some limitations. One of it is a user with a lower reputation cannot affect users with a higher reputation than them. They can upvote or downvote and these can affect payout rewards and even zero them. But will not affect reputation score. Only users with a higher reputation than you can affect your score. Negative reputation users cannot affect reputation score of other users.

Gaining level

Taking-Procurement-Organization-to-the-Next-Level2.jpg

Untistled-1.jpg
Steemit reputation points are calculated using the log base 10 functions. It is easy to increase your reputation score at the beginning, but the higher your reputations get, the harder it is to increase your score. It is about 10x harder from 1 point to the next. A level 50 reputation is 10x stronger than a 49 reputation. And a -5 reputation is 10x weaker than a -4 reputation.

Where to see your actual score

There is 2 kind of score, simplified and raw score. The one on your Steemit profile which is 25 when you start is not the actual value stored in the Steem blockchain, It's only a simplified reputation score. You reputation score are actual values in big number instead of a simple two digit reputation score. Your scores can be found on https://steemd.com/@username.

  • Use the log base 10 of the score
  • Subtract 9
  • Multiply by 9
  • Add 25
  • Round down to the nearest integer

Clipboard02.jpg

Let's do some math

My reputation is 56 let's use that as example
2836367613266 is my raw reputation number

Calculate the log base 10 of the raw score from your steemd.com/@username.
LOG base 10 of 2836367613266 = 12.4527625178
Subtract 9 from this number. 12.4527625178 – 9 = 3.4527625178
Multiply this number by 9. 3.4527625178 x 9 = 31.0748626602
Add 25 to this number. 31.0748626602 + 25 = 56.0748626602
Once I get this number (56.0748626602) I round down and my reputation score = 56.

  • The score of 2836367613266 becomes a simplified score of 56.

Steemit Reputation Score Table

Here's a score table to check how many point needed for the next level.
Your raw reputation scores can be found on https://steemd.com/@username Take out the word username and your username.

Your post comes at the right time!

@hasmez I'm very glad Thank you!

Wow. Thanks for sharing this. You just made the complicated things simple here. Never knew this kind of maths is involved. I'm sure people that hated maths in high school will now love it here.

@udembahenry I had to do a lot of research for this. Thanks again!

Lol... It's funny to say people who didn't like Maths in high school will now love it here.

I thought with my level 33 I have to be at least a teen, but you ruined my hopes, I am still a little toddler. Start crying)) I want to grow up!

AHaha You will be a professional soon. @johnstone

@vaansteam Hope so, how people say in our area - "Your words to God's ears")

The categories are a bit male-oriented, don't you think? How about something more gender-neutral (neutral is all the rage these days!)
Baby
Toddler
Child
Teen
Adult
Steemian

Lol Thank you for pointing that out. I already took your suggestion!

Fantastic!

Real.......and true.....
I followed u.plz follow me!

Wow, incredible publication @vaansteam, I have about two weeks in Steemit I am a baby in reputation, but little by little I have been learning from this great community, and reading your post has been a growth for me, thank you very much for publishing it has been of great help, and from now on, I will put into practice every word, and really as you say is not easy, it takes effort and perseverance, I congratulate you for your excellent work, you have been blessing THANK YOU!

image.gif

@yudech Thank you!. ANd I hope you will do really well on Steemit. I know it's hard but everything takes time. Good luck to you!

what happens if the post was of quality content(got fair numbr of upvotes) and it gets a downvote from a person with higher reputation?? Won't it be unfair for the poster to get a decrease in reputation? ?

@faithfulomoy If you get downvote then your reputation and your reward will go down. People don't usually downvote without a reason. so make sure you make good content. But with that being said, there are some that goes around bullying people. Just be careful. Good luck to you

Oook. Thanks.

Thank you for sharing this! This is very useful for newbie like me and now I know why I only posted my introduce myself post and I hit 30 reputation! And thank you for the reputation table!
Would like to ask, I did notice different comment from me yield different weight of raw reputation?

@williamsyee congrats on your introduction post. It will only change a lot faster when you get more upvote from the reputation that is higher than you, that's from comments or content.

Thank you for reply :)

very clearly post @vaansteam,
i understand about your explanation. thank you very much,,
Nice post and please upvote me,,
😀😀

@muhammadhelmi92Thank you very much!

thank you very much for your upvote @vaansteam

I dont now what is SBD i think in Super Dragon ball the first time that i see (yerterday) hahahaha, can you tell me something about this?... thanks and i want to participate in some constest but i really don´t now how :( thanks for your information i´ts very interesthing :) (sorry my bad english)

It's not the Super dragon balls you can make a wish with ahhaa It's Steem dollars like USD but for Steem platform. Here's more info on it in my other post. https://steemit.com/basictraining/@vaansteam/steem-steem-dollars-and-steem-power-what-s-the-difference

Thank you @vaansteam for clearing things up with your post. I really don't know before where those numbers came from and how significant it is for every steemians. Now it's crystal clear.

Just to share some of my story of ignorance: me and my friend joined steemit on the same day, we both posted the first post which is the "introductory of myself". Then because he has more followers than me, he got more up votes and also I found out that he also has higher reputation than me. So what I did is I post more blogs than him because I thought reputation come from how many blogs you've posted. But then I was wrong all this time until I bumped to your post. :) thanks again @ vaansteam
I'll be more mindful of the content of my blog now.

Posting a lot of blogs is good too. Your reputation comes from upvotes you get on your content. And from comments. But I see that you're doing pretty well. Just keep going.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Yeah.. I like it here on steemit than other social media platform. Not only you'll get paid from your post but also the people here(steemians) are encouraging and helping each other. No negative people. Thanks for your encouragement @vaansteam:)

Thank you for the guide. What I like about your post is that, it is simplified and easy for a newbie like me to understand the contents. Keep it up!

Money doesn't buy class.. i totally agree with that. This doesn't only apply on steemit but also in our daily life!

@connie1018 You're always so nice with your comments! Thank you. And yes money is not everything. Is how we treat others.

Thank you so much for this information. Your post is very well laid out, the information is exceptionally clear and every user should know this.

Just as an aside, the first two digits of your raw score doubled give the same simple reputation score. I wonder if this works for all?

@notconvinced Thank you very much for that!. Yes, it should. You need to go to steemd.com to find out your raw score. Use the log base 10 of the score, subtract 9 multiply by 9 and add 25 and you should get your simplified score.

I understand that my friend, I just showed an easier way. Take the first 2 digits and multiply by 2 and you get the same answer.

Great post! I love all of the info. You were very detailed in your explanation. You made what could be a complicated concept very easy to understand. -@bozz

Thank you @bozz again for the support!. I really appreciate that!

Block chain value/ raw score: 64,257,198,441

Reputation score: = 41.271296083 ~ 41

Got it, thanks!

@debbietiyan you got it good job!

Second graphic could be a bit more gender inclusive, or better yet non-gender specific, but overall some very helpful information vaansteam, thanks for posting it.

Sorry about that, I already took your advice and change it thank you for pointing that out!

Awesome, very cool to see you incorporate the feedback. Looks great!

Very informative post @vaansteam.
Good point about your post are, your title really catches my attention because that is my question also as newbie. Second you don't only define the reputation you clearly show the computations and different scenario on how we can work out our reputation and you also share how we can protect our reputation. Thanks for this informative post.

@joeysison. This is what I'm talking about the high-quality comment. You will do really well. Keep comments like this and your reputation will go up.

Thanks @vaansteam I will apply that learnings. Thanks for sharing.

Being new I found this post to be extremely helpful! I guess I am a ..boy 😂 according to your chart. I really didn’t need understand reputation scores before I read this. Thanks for explaining it so well!

Your welcome @emmyem84, There's a lot of mixed information out there. And I try to make everything easy to understand. And I already edit it so now you're a teen lol

Wow, now im seriously wondering how you got this data, dats very resourceful, thanks for the hard work, thats a big step towards understanding this system better, great Job...

I do a lot of research thanks again for the support!

These were many things I needed to know. Now the reputation system is much more transparent to me. I am just starting to wrap my head around promising ways to publish on here.

Thank you for the in-depth article!

I'm glad it was useful. Wish you the best!

I've been here a while and always been curious on how rep worked, and how others in Steemit viewed you. Looks like I am an adult. Good to know :)
Thanks

@garyph Yes, you're an adult!. Hope you will be a Guru soon!. Good luck you! See you around!

Thanks for the detailed explaination.

You're very welcome!

You make it sound so simple. Thank you for explaining it in terms many can understand! 👍

You're every welcome! Let me know if there's anything I can help!

Yes, thank you! I feel like I've been stuck at 40 forever. I was just going to do a search for this, and there you were! Perfect timing, great explanation. I guess I'll just keep plugging away consistently.

Yes, it just gets harder as your the level gets higher. Good luck to you!

Thank you for breaking that down, with a good explanation. The points and reputation system on steemit makes me feel that I am in an episode of "Black Mirror" somehow...

Hi @cyber.explorer, I've been hearing about this "Black Mirror" series being similar to steemit in terms of reputations. I will have to look this up now, sounds interesting.

Hi @vaansteam, thank you again for this imformative post. Makes wonder sometimes wonder where are you getting all these information from? You've must have been doing a lot of research and for that, thank you!😃

I have watched Black Mirror on Netflix. Try to see if it's available where you are.
Specifically the episode from season 1 "Fifteen Million Merits", in addition to the episode from season 3 "Nosedive"

Alright! Thank you for the suggestion. Although I do not have a Netflix subscription, I will still find other ways to find that. =)

@superstarxtala I did a lot of research. I make sure I know everything before I post something. I hope you a blessed day where ever you are!

@cyber.explorer You're welcome!. I never saw Black mirror before. I'll have to check it out

Great guide bro @vaansteam !

I always check out the posts :) good read.

I think am starting to understand something better from the post.. Have been wondering why my introduce yourself seemingly turned out to be a disaster ..back to the drawing board first build my reputation then a redo of my introduction. https://goo.gl/images/VMvEbW

I like your post,it's great.

Thank you @humai

This helped a lot. I was wondering what would stop someone from spammig or reuploading other people's content.

There's a robot going around flagging people for that

This helps a lot to understand how much effort you need to move on to the next level.

Thank you
@bloggerslife

It takes a lot of effort. It's harder every time. 10x harder

Dear Vaan,

I have just started blogging here on Steemit and I really like it soo far!
But what I have noticed is that it can be very difficult to start. I think of myself as a pretty standard guy. But I think that some of the things I post are pretty good. I am getting some results already and I am very pleased to see that! But do you think that for me to get actually big it is more important that I just keep posting quality content that I like? Or should I make sure that I cater my content to what people here on Steemit like more? I think the danger in that would be that I will not have fun in posting something every day... and I started doing this because I enjoy showing people the things that go on in my life.

Could you be so kind to give me advice on what you think it is that I should do?

Thank you very much and have a nice day further!

Just_DB

I enjoy posting these content cause I like it. Try to do the things you like and the right people will follow. But listen and take a suggestion from the community.

Okay I will definitely keep doing that then! Thank you for your advice :)

Very informative and to the point. Thank you.

I am still learning a lot about Steemit but it was pretty obvious to me from the beginning that quality content and getting involved with others was the the thing to do.

Thank you for confirming the details.

@atomcollector That's why I see that's why you're doing so well. Keep it up, my friend!

Yes it's not really anything to do with the platform is it. Just common sense!

Thank you for your easy to understand post. It is very informative and answered some of my questions. Keep up good posting that I can learn more 😉

@gaja I will, I'll try to post every day. Thank you for support!

You are the best! I've been struggling to understand how this reputation system works for quite some time. In the beginning I was so happy when I saw how quickly I gain reputation score, but then it suddenly became harder. Now, when you explained the logaritmic scale, everything makes so much sense. I am very glad to resteem your post, because this way I will also always know where to look for the much needed info. Thanks buddy ;)

@nedy Thank very much. Much appreciate it! I'm glad it was helpful to you. And I hope your reputation keep on rising.

I like you post. great

Thank you @oswaldoafg94

Thanks for explanation of reputation subject. But still I have one question, why people who make perfect content and share real knowledge have less rep. points that those who share very piece of trash in every 5 minutes (making steemit a little bit cluttered) ??

I know it's hard for newcomers. Some of the reason is some of them been here for a long time. Keep your head up high. It takes time.

Thanks for your help! I will!

You say each number is ten times stronger than the one before? That's pretty amazing.

Yes, it gets harder every time. It hard for me to reach another level than before.

This post has received gratitude of 2.14 % from @appreciator thanks to: @vaansteam.
