Yanno, most people have a few liberal values. Tell me, why are so many Americans so scared of liberals?

me thinks the word liberal means a different thing here than it does where you are.

here we're not so much afraid of it.
we'd just rather not get it on our shoes.
(tracks up the carpet rilly bad...smells too)

I'm not a smelly liberal! lol

In fact I don't even like that label.

All the 'liberals' I know, don't like guns - that's not a good sign.

If you arne't prepared to defend yourself and your property (freedom), they the label of liberal, is faux.

And if you think property rights are immoral, you're not liberal, you're a commie in disguise. (as the 'liberal' movement in the US, now appears to be...)

I think that's my stall laid out...

Ah, I have been in these waters before, and they get choppy. You feel strongly about the gun thing, and so do I, and we will not agree. And it is pointless talking about it, because neither of us is going to change our mind. And I have only been on Steemit five minutes, and a row about guns isn't going to do me any favours!

I don't have a problem with property rights, but I do have a problem with the way wealth is distributed, and I am probably closer to communism there than you would be comfortable with. Eight people have as much wealth as 3.5bn and 20000 children die of malnutrition every day. There is something profoundly wrong with that picture. Isn't there?

No fear off offending here, mate, type away.

It's a snowflake free zone..

Ah, it's not that! You have a thick skin, anyway, and know who you are, so I am not sure I could offend you. You don't need my approval, and that's how it should be.

The gun thing is a road to nowhere. I am sure we have both heard the rhetoric from the other side, and I am certain that our relative positions are intransigent. There is literally nothing to be gained from talking about it.

I have had so many conversations about it, and they never end well, and I am really enjoying talking to you. The funny thing is, we are miles apart at times, and then very close together! It just shows that all these labels are bullshit.

The big problem is that modern western politics forces you to pick a side.

labels are indeed BS.

The gun issue is a fundamental one - the right to protect yourself, and not relying on another authority to protect you.

You believe in that or you believe in authority.

I don't like authority - I have never encountered it, and felt better from the meeting...

Assuming one's own authority is freedom.

The thing is though that America is a particular case. You don't see what I see from across the pond. That doesn't make my view qualitatively better than yours, but it is different.

We don't own guns over here. I mean, they are around, but they are rare. As a consequence, there is almost no gun crime.

We don't need an authority to protect us, because there is no threat to protect us from. There are police, obviously, but their job is somewhat different over here.

And that's at the heart of the debate - you think you need a gun to protect yourself (perhaps you do), I know that I don't need one to protect myself.

We can't agree, because we live in different worlds.

Yes, this picture is indeed wrong - very much so...it's called crony capitalism.

The backdoor route to communism - it all leads to greater centralization, and concentration of power/wealth.

There hasn't been truly free markets for centuries...

Free market capitalism is the only way to ensure greater distribution of wealth...

Decentralization, and no coercive (corrupt) government, to interfere with commerce.

I think the concept of "free markets" is a myth. Money, power and corruption go hand in hand, and even though the rest of us have never been so well informed (or at least have the capacity to be so), the gap between rich and poor has never been starker.

I am not sure I agree (bet you didn't see that coming!) that free market capitalism is the path out of this. It sounds like you are describing libertarianism to me, and I have to say that I do not trust big money makers to have much of a social conscience.

I realise that you hate the idea of communism (and I do get it - the concept is flawed and just as susceptible to corruption), but if I were king, I would be looking to forcibly redistributing the wealth of the super-rich. Not across the board! I wouldn't be looking to make everyone equal (that's naive bullshit), but I would happily sacrifice those at the top of the chain to make things fairer.

just mentioned you in dispatches - dunno if it will help you much - or not, to be honest...

That's great. Thank you. And it all helps! I am hoping that there is a tipping point on here. I am some way off, but I have only been here two weeks. The kindness of strangers is a wonderful thing.

but if I were king, I would be looking to forcibly redistributing the wealth of the super-rich.

...and there in is the problem - centralized power to dictate market forces, decided upon by a human conciensess. It has never worked ou tin history, nor can it...

I think the concept of "free markets" is a myth

A hubris that the human knows better than an age old.. - THE age old - natural dynamic consistent throughout nature, from bacteria to lions....
Supply and demand, and price being decided by that, and nothing more.

Further human tinkering into an over tinkered system = more distortion.
Welcome to the 21st century.

Monopolies and big money makers would disappear quickly without government corruption.
(regulations and rules only being an extension of banking rule to keep the competitor out of the market.

Dinosaurs are slow,(corporations)
Small mammals will take over...if they have the freedom to be in the market place.

Big money social conscience is irrelevant.

The free market will soon redistribute the wealth down from those idiots.

I have to say I don't see it. As much as the current system is awful, a system without government interference will, IMO, allow even more sociopaths to abuse the power that they have.

This is my left wing upbringing coming out, but the way forward is universal free healthcare, free public transport, free education and universal welfare, and unfettered capitalism will have no interest in all the above, because there is no profit in it.

I would imagine that you are not an advocate for all the above...feel free to set me straight!

ZAP
(zero aggression principle)
that's my story and I'm stickin to it.
call yourself what you want...I don't care.

Does it mean something different? Liberal to me means progress and freedom.

it means the exact opposite here.
the word has been hijacked by the socialists/communists/ democrats/ fascists. It doersn't mean what it used to mean.

I think it also how one defines "freedom" and "progress" as well. They are not fixed.

ZAP...
anything else is none of anyone's business.
