Contests and challenges are cool... and I do believe they are good for Steemit because they (A) promote interaction and engagement and (B) that means we get more people involved in using the site... which might steer us away from some of the recent issues surrounding the "upvote bots."
I'd much rather "make mine" through sincere participation than through patting myself on the back with technology.

That's a news to me now! I've participated in several contests and never got such a feeling. Could be an odd experience with you. Yes, sometimes the host is new and don't have a very clear and explicit policy but their intention is not mala fide. But I don't complain as they are probably new and still learning. I've approached several organizers and after my suggestions they made the requisite changes in rules to their contests. Very recently, I participated in a contest and had some discussion with its organizer on a different issue at a different user's post. But just due to the difference in our opinions on it, she disqualified me from her contest. But fixing is quite a different allegation!
P.S.:
Do participate in my Crossword contest sometime ...we may do some fixing to compensate to your past frustrations 😜

I did hold a contest for a while were I delegated 500 SP for 1 months to the winner. I got up to nr 7. I got a bit frustrated since a couple of winners went inactive after a while still having the delegation.

One thing I I did win was being mentioned by @christian-trail one week as a first place christian-trail winner for the week on a blog (original poem) I wrote about my late sweetheart Marcia. This was two months ago. It so warmed my heart that in her memory the post did so well. The poem was called 'Here I Sit Alone In Quietness.' I had done other posts mentioning her as my way of saying 'Thank You Marcia for all the selfless love you gave.' I have entered a few other poetry contests with good general poetry but no wins on them yet. Yes contests can be a wonderful motivator. Thanks for leading in the spirit here at Steemit.
