I read they are very prone to rot. Some even cut off that tap root when they are young, so it doesn't have a chance to rot. Not gonna do that though!

It is like a hunting game.. among dozens and dozens of small pots one was like this :)

I keep my Astros (except asterias) on rain. So they are not so root prone (like Ariocarpus, Turbinicarpus... and some others very sensitive) if they are in mineral and when it is warm/summertime. But the neck has to be protected from soil!

Out of curiosity... how often do water the other regular types that grow outside in the summer?
I know it depends on many factors...
