Tell us what you know about witnesses, for example: tasks, roles / functions of witnesses in the Steem Blockchain.
Witnesses are very important in every blockchain technology because they perform a big function when it comes to validation and the security of the blocks in the blockchain under consideration. Witnesses are responsible to protect the blockchain from any form of attack and that helps users of the blockchain be more confident of the blockchain because their assets are secured.
In the case of the steem blockchain, the witness is responsible for producing a block and also verifying transactions and ensuring the security of the blockchain to earn users' confidence in the blockchain.
Witness in the steem blockchain is chosen via votes. All steemian are eligible to vote for the witness they want. Every steemian is eligible to vite for 30 different users as a witness and anyone who meets the criteria can be a witness.
Roles/Function of witnesses in the steem blockchain
Now, the major role of a witness is to participate in the governance of the steem blockchain. Participating in governance means being part of the decision-making that ensures the growth of the steem blockchain example is updating the software or changing the way the software function.
More also, the witness is responsible for block production and validation of transactions. These things are done transparently so that those concerned I.e the users will have confidence in the blockchain. So witness works to endure the growth of the steem blockchain.
Why do we need to choose Witness?
The importance of witnesses in the steem blockchain can never be overemphasised. I have said earlier that the witness helps to keep the blockchain functioning properly. So we need to choose the witness in other to ensure that the steem blockchain continues functioning well.
Recall, I said in the beginning that we select a witness by casting a vote. Now, you must choose a witness that is active and contributes to the growth of the platform. So we choose those who show serious commitment to ensuring the growth of the platform.
A witness is like a representative of the other steemian because they help in answering some questions which we are not familiar with because they have more in-depth knowledge and skill about the steem blockchain.

My preferred witness is pennsif.witness which is run by @pennsif. Before he got to the top 20, I saw all the contributions he has been making to the platform via the news update and running of real-life projects most especially here in Nigeria.
I decided to remove one of the witnesses I have initially voted for so that he can join the top 20. His work is remarkable and he runs real-life projects which will go a long way to touch the lives of many.
I have been privileged to chat with him too on discord and he advised and encouraged me and also told me to always contact him anytime I have any challenge with the platform. So I prefer him because he is hardworking and also approachable.
So in essence, voting for a good witness like @pennsif.witness will go a long way in helping the steemit platform to grow more because carrying out real-life projects advertise steemit even more than any other promotional activities.
Witnesses are important aspects of any blockchain. The steem witness helps to produce and validate the transaction in the blockchain and also ensures that there is much security for the blockchain. They are rewarded for their work anytime a new block is produced. I want to invite a few friends @fjjrg, @afrizalbinalka, @ruthjoe, @chiabertrand, @lavanyalakshman and @pelon53 to also join the contest.

You said it right brother because without them it is not possible to run Steem blockchain smoothly and uninterrupted. We need to carefully select only the best ones that are fully active and are supporting the network.
